Great video Johnathon. Woodturners also use coffee grounds and CA. Also we sometimes accentuate the flaw and turn it into a feature by filling with brass powder or a colored resin or crushed mineral.
Great tips Jason. I always learn something from your posts. I also use a mashup of a couple of these techniques for some problem spots. Work sawdust into a void then flood with thin CA glue. Finally, rub a little more sawdust over the top. I’ve used this with small voids when turning and it blends in nicely.
Thank you for the information. I wasn't looking forward to about 20 knotty alder doors and epoxy. I am going to use the rangate and trusting that you haven't seen any problems with shrinkage on interior doors. Crossing fingers.
Jjust finishing building my second coffee table and ran into a couple of minor problems. But now i know exactly what to do. Gratful for the vid, thanks!!!
I m thinking about using the hot glue gun method. Is this a safe bet for pre-finished hardwood floor board as I don't want to sand. I believe using the cutter carefully may work. What is your thoughts?
Just ordered the knot filler, I'm going to use it to plug up knob holes and repair cabinet doors before primer. but dam that thing is super expensive. but if it saves me time filling holes and dry time I say money well spent, and if it ends up so flush so much savings in sanding I hope this works for me
Problem with rangate is the cost. $260+ for starter kit plus & $8.00 per glue stick. Starbond or epoxy mixed with saw dust is also good for large voids. Have had good success with that method. Great info on all the methods demonstrated.
Just received my Hot melt gun system yesterday and look forward to using it. I have a large Oak slab with a large knot to fill as well as several gaps, cracks and etc. I got the smaller gun kit. Great video.
Do you think you have to worry about setting some thing warm or hot on that area (in the case of a countertop) where you use the glue gun because it may re-melt the glue?!
@@christazitko476 I don't believe it would melt, it's not actually glue but nylon which melts at 268C. I have been using it now for over a year and it works great.
Great video, quick question for you can you use the titebond and sawdust to fill in a hole in the wood instead of using something like an epoxy. Lets say it a chuck missing of 1/8 deep by about 1 inch by 1 inch.
Hi Jason. Recently laid some light oak flooring with some large knot holes. Going to try the hot glue method. What’s the best gun on the market now, and although it’s light wood the knots are dark so would think black would be good. Great videos and thanks for the tips.
I just installed some cumaru hardwood flooring. Because of the minor inconsistent milling, there are some small yet annoying gaps. I am sure some of these techniques would work well
It isn’t literally hot glue. I should have been more clear in the video I think. It is a proprietary blend designed to be suitable for these applications. According to the website it takes finishes just fine. I don’t have a lot of experience with that just yet.
Jason, I am new to woodworking. I've watched many of your videos. You provide so much useful information! Today I would like to ask what brand the base of your work table is. I would also like to know what brand the side rails are. I know you use a Festool MFT surface. Please answer me asap as I would love to get a table built asap.
Love the video regarding ways to fill cracks and holes. I have a piece of black walnut bar rail that has a hole from knot that fell out leaving a hole about the size of a dime that penetrates the entire piece of rail approximately one and a half inches thick and perforates slightly through the back end. I would love to be able to use the knot gun as you demonstrate however this is a single-use type of application so don't want to invest that type of money as I don't foresee using it in the future. So options left are using black epoxy to fill in hole or the method that seems easier the black ca method that you show. However the hole is huge. So I was wondering if I could use a combination of the techniques? Maybe using a walnut wood filler which I have in my possession to fill the whole approximately 95% letting that dry overnight and then applying the black ca method to finish it off. Or would you recommend using some type of dowel or plug in combination with the ca method? Calling on your experience as I feel like I will only get one shot at getting this right. Any help would be appreciated.
Does the hot glue bond big voids and cracks with any kind of structural strength if needed? Seems like it wouldn't. I usually use epoxy for something like that but this looks faster and easier.
I'm looking all over YT and nobody can help me. I'm trying to dismantle a built in cupboard wall, and I need to get to the screws underneath the woodfiller on the back walls. How is that done? Any help or ideas about getting to the screws would be a godsend.
When loose packing the sawdust in a crack how does it not just move out? I don’t want to use glue because I need to stain. I’m considering staining the dust or even sanding dried stained wood then regular glue or ca after. Ever tried that?
Curious if water based and oil based stains are compatible with the hot glue gun method? I’m trying to figure out If water based rethunk junk stain and tuff top will work on top of a big hot glue gun knot hole.
i used to take a bowl and put in saw dust and wood glue and the vigorously mix them together till they are at the point of forming clumps, then just apply that, thou it'll take awhile for the glue to dry up
I am doing a bed frame made of 2x4 from my local Home Depot, but they have knots, if I use the CA Glue method can I paint the 2x4 in white without the fear of knots bleeding through the paint leaving a stain mark
For lots of knots, I would suggest using epoxy. As for the bleeding issue, you would want to make sure you use a good quality primer and prime it well. I have found it very good for that reason.
Hey. Nice video. Thanks for making them. I was just curious what the texture of that hot glue is like. Is it similar to standard hot glue, harder etc...?
Great video Johnathon. Woodturners also use coffee grounds and CA. Also we sometimes accentuate the flaw and turn it into a feature by filling with brass powder or a colored resin or crushed mineral.
Thanks Mike! I like the coffee grounds idea a lot.
Great tips Jason. I always learn something from your posts.

David Clarke that’s a great idea!
could'nt help to be jealous of all the woodpecker tools behind you
Good stuff Jason. The hot melt is the only one I haven't seen before. Thanks.
William Ellis it’s a pretty cool device!
Super helpful. Thanks for the advice. Keep up the great work
Excellent tips, Jason. I've ran across a few of these problems in the past without out knowing how to deal with them. Now I do!
Awesome! Happy you found it useful
Thank you for the information. I wasn't looking forward to about 20 knotty alder doors and epoxy. I am going to use the rangate and trusting that you haven't seen any problems with shrinkage on interior doors. Crossing fingers.
I haven’t experienced issues personally. It’s good for a lot of uses I think. Epoxy would be much stronger option.
Great tips!!

Thank you Jason! I learn so much from your videos!
So glad you find them helpful 😊
Thanks for this. I really like the hot glue method.

Thanks for the very instructive video...extremely helpful. 👍🏻
Thanks, glad you liked it 👍
Thanks for sharing. It's always clear and helpfull. Merci beaucoup

Tons of really good info! Thanks Jason!
Donny Carter thanks Donny! Glad you liked it brother 👊🏼

I use starbond constantly
Helpful, I have just tried superglue and wood shavings to fill in holes on reused pine, trying to get a glass-like finish.
Hey thanks for putting this together, helped me out a lot! Keep it up
Glad you liked it
Excellent video

I like the glue gun for larger knots. How hard will the glue get? Where do you find hardening glue?
Great video, quick question for you can you use the titebond and sawdust to fill in a hole in the wood instead of using something like an epoxy. Lets say it a chuck missing of 1/8 deep by about 1 inch by 1 inch.
I would probably use epoxy for something that size

Excellent demonstration video. I didn’t know about the hot glue gun. I’m wondering how it links under different finishes especially lacquer.

Now I want a hot glue gun.
🤣🤣
Fantastic
Very useful! Thank You!
You’re welcome
is the glue stick actual glue? or is it a plastic. I tried it with black glue and had issues with it sticking to the aluminum block.
No officer! It’s my personal bag of “wood filler” 😜
🤣
Great ideas, thanks for the video...
Wayne McD you’re very welcome! 👍

i’m sure it’s just an mft table. you’re talking about the aluminum legs and siderailds right? that’s just the mft/3
Do you think the sawdust technique will work with small chip out as well?
I think so, yes
How does that "glue" do with finishes? There was an obvious "matte" look after you rubbed down the wood. Does that last?
Do you have any woodpecker products?
A lot yes
just a question with the last method..... is possible to drill the place we filled?
I haven’t tried. It definitely wouldn’t provide the holding power
These are some great tips. The one with the woodglue and sawdust i already use, the other i have to try soon! Thanks for these tips!
No problem! Glad you found it helpful

I would probably just go with epoxy for something large like to talk about
Does the hot glue bond big voids and cracks with any kind of structural strength if needed? Seems like it wouldn't. I usually use epoxy for something like that but this looks faster and easier.
I wouldn’t be using it for structural integrity

Will these techniques used on a walnut cutting board show up after finishing the board with mineral oil?
Thanks,
Jim
I think some of them may be fine but I couldn’t say for certain
@@bentswoodworking
Thank you sir for the quick reply. I appreciate it.
Jim
You’re welcome
What kind of filler can I use on cutting boards
Thanks
Does the CA and glue gun products accept the finish you use?
I typically Don’t use stain so I don’t know personally. All other tops coat work just fine
Curious if water based and oil based stains are compatible with the hot glue gun method? I’m trying to figure out If water based rethunk junk stain and tuff top will work on top of a big hot glue gun knot hole.
The stain won’t do anything but the finish will adhere to it
What the the pressure block and blade called please for the hot glue on the knot at the end? Thanks
They come with the kit, they aren’t separate items.

Bent's Woodworking thank you
Would hot candle wax work in the knots?
Hey. Nice video. Thanks for making them. I was just curious what the texture of that hot glue is like. Is it similar to standard hot glue, harder etc...?
Similar but I don’t think it’s the same
What is the tool used at 14:20 please? Will it work with epoxy or will it be too hard? Looks preferable to a scraper. Thanks
Comes with the gun
It’s looks to be a handy dandy gadget, lol!
Rangate knot filler is not glue. It’s actually polyamide nylon.
Jason, there is no info on the glue gun or glue sticks you used. Really neat trick.
There is a link to their website in the description
Thanks Jason.
Would the Starbond work on White Oak as well? I got a very small crack in my Oak table. Thank you for this!!!
It will work on any species of wood. All these techniques would 🙂
where can i buy the glue gun set with pressure block and "scraper"?! link please.
Did you look in the video description? There is a link there.
Does the activator stain the wood?0
Who makes the glue gun kit please
Rangate
For me the smal epoxy bottles i was able to use it 4 to 5 time
I was always to lazy to change the tips before it cured 🤦🏼♂️
I was messing around with my best friends wife and now I have a knot of my head. Will this work for that? 🤕
Unfortunately not lol
Possibly you were a knot head before that event :)
MobileDecay does the knot go all the way through?
If you are Jason as you allege, who is Ben and why are you working for him?
There is no Ben. Bent is my last name. Bents Woodworking
Can’t believe that hot glue gun is $300 lol - I did find some helpful tips on here though
Glad you found it helpful
Its not hot glue and hot glue gun :) Try use hot glue and regular hot glue gun on nut :DDD
how about some nice tomato ketchup mixed with rice if you didn't got any of these weird fillers.😑
jason you do good on the video’s except you talk like you’re talking to a 5th grader in your explanation 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I’m shooting for 6th grade level
Unfortunately, I’ve never had to do any woodworking, so it was perfect for me, lol;)
