The lyrics “I donate my love” are the most painful lyrics ever. Meaning she knows she’s not going to get the love and the emotions back .. but she willingly donates her love- knowing it won’t be reciprocated. Wow so simple and so sad

The 'I gave you nothing, I understand' part really got to me. So many people write people off when they're struggling, so I love this admission of fault on the behalf of the people around the person that's struggling that could've been more supportive but ultimately weren't. So powerful.
Got emotional throught the whole song but the "I donate my love/ I gave you nothing, I understand" part made me cry out of nowhere and in a manner I didn't expect 😖

To me , this song could be about a friend that you loved dearly that committed suicide or attempted to and you’re just lost & confused because you thought you two were super close and you’re just wondering what signs you missed when they seemed so happy all the time . I can apply this to my own life when I’m battling depression and smiling on the outside but crying on the inside and none of my friends know the extent of the pain I deal with . Always check on your “happy friends”. Been listening nonstop for days and I keep coming up with so many scenarios how so many people could relate to these simple yet meaningful lyrics , to the person with a terminally ill family member that passed while seeming okay the day before to the person that has a best friend or family member battling depression but seems happy on the outside . Just reminds me to never judge a book by its cover but still love even if the person receiving the love doesn’t see it as valuable . I donate my love 💕.

I also imagined it being from the perspective of perhaps parents that lose their children to suicide. Very powerful stuff. Perhaps more of a self-insert than how it was originally intended but still this kind of interpretation is why I love Banks' work. There's her intention but also enough space to put in how you feel and have it resonate with you in a completely different yet very meaningful way.

It’s singing about something that’s quite heavy; looking back on a relationship and thinking ‘maybe we didn’t break up because we weren’t right for each other, maybe you were depressed. Why didn’t I see that?’ Rather than this dark, jaded feeling, it’s beautiful, and tender, and pure, and real. There’s no self-hate in that song. I’m so heady, and I’m a perfectionist too - I’m working on that - but I’m really hard on myself. I think kids aren’t so hard on themselves. Before you’ve experienced anything hard like pain, or someone lying - there’s a naïveté and hopefulness before you become a little bit… I don’t like the word jaded! It’s more just real. I wanted to capture some of that tender, naïve romanticism on this album. That’s such a huge part of who I am. I like that this album has a lot of heaviness, and it also has a lot of that really tender, hopeful feeling" -Banks
