- It's pretty widely known that 9,999 is the highest score possible for the super fun and addicting fishing mini-game in Breath of Fire III. I decided that a TAS needed to be made showing that it's possible, just so it can be referenced if anyone is curious.
This run is started a little while after reaching the final fishing spot on the Lost Shore. I used janus' full-game run as a jumping off point, since it takes a while to get this far in the game. In retrospect, I probably should have started the TAS after the game was completed so that I could show off the rewards, but oh well.
Next I'd like to closely watch the stamina of each fish, and determine the best techniques to quickly drain it. I'd also like to figure out the exact window of timing for each of the techs. Finally, estimating the chance of a max length fish would also be helpful.

For those of you that don't know, TAS stands for Tool-Assisted Speedrun (or in this case, Superplay). An emulator is used so that one can use save states to correct mistakes and frame-advance for precision. I also relied heavily on memory watching and lua scripting so that I instantly knew how long each fish was when I entered a fishing area (I have another video of the script in action).

I didn't even need a TAS to get 9,999 back in the day. I simply played the shit out of it. I freaking loved the fishing minigame.
I would go as far to say that's the hardest part of the game. That sounds like a nightmare. I like how they give you the best fishing rod after you have fished so much, you will probably NEVER want to fish again 😂. I got the Goo King Sword by getting EXTREMELY lucky in the fairy card game. It took me soooo long just to catch the spear fish and barandy ONCE, I would NEVER do this. I just could NOT figure out the tech system. I basically just randomly tapped X and did eventually catch one of every fish and that was good enough for me. Surprisingly I caught a whale the first time I ever tried in about 2 minutes. But I almost gave up on fishing when I learned you had to do the stupid tech system to catch the hardest few. The spearfish especially, it took me literal hours just to get one to BITE, and I had all of the top bait 🤷♂️.
@@bubblegumxo Lol it's really not that hard. You just have to get your button timing down. I always did the Tech 4 over and over in quick succession as it's far easier than the Tech 5. I would never want to have to do the Tech 5 over and over lol, that one is indeed hard to pull off consistently.
Point being, try to just stick to the simpler techs. If you can at least pull off a Tech 3 with regularity then you can catch anything in the game without a problem.
Actually, does it go up to Tech 5? I haven't played the game in a long time now so I can't recall. I just remember that I always used the Tech 2nd from the top as I couldn't do the toughest one with regularity.
@@skins4thewin it only goes up to Tech 4. Tech 2 is actually the easiest, and I was able to do Tech 3 some times, but I swear those 2 fish would just NOT bite, even with Tech 3 and the best baits that they went after. I got very lucky with the Whale. Tech 4 I just couldn't do at all, I did it TWICE and that was on accident pressing X in random intervals. There's just no way in hell I will ever even ATTEMPT to get 9999 points. I seriously applaud you, because that sounds tedious and monotonous as hell. I'm just amazed I at least caught one of everything 😁.
@@bubblegumxo You are clearly doing something wrong then or are using the wrong bait, because they can and will bite without any issue if you have your bait near them and are doing techs. Chances are you're trying to use the wrong bait, as certain fish will only eat certain baits, specially the tougher fish.
I never struggled to get 9999 that much, it just took time. You can too.
@@skins4thewin apparently I am/was lol. I first beat this game in like 1999, and just finished it again last week. I used the top frog bait because that's what I saw used in videos. I saw conflicting things on online guides. Honestly I've already moved on to other games and probably won't be playing this game again maybe ever 🤷♂️. The first time I played through this I had no idea about learning enemy skills or stacking buffs. I could not believe how easy this game is when you learn certain enemy skills and focus on speed! I have no doubt I could get 9999 with dedication, but the reward just isn't worth it to me lol 🤷♂️. Still, I admire your patience, I just didn't find fishing to be fun at all. I just wanted to catch every fish because I never did as a kid! 😂

im wondering for tec 4. I sometime randomly get it. 3 is easy but fuck I dont get what im doing right when I get +4.
+biomecaNICK What ended up working for me is letting the pauses (the times when you're not pressing X) linger longer than you normally would. I can pull them off fairly regularly now

how is that possible? you are fishing every time the bigger size of the fish?
