I think punk/omega were down to face each other for the name of business. Omega been on record saying he would’ve like to gotten to that match. And punk probably would’ve been okay with losing to omega even for the title on the line. However, the caveat for punk was prolly a 6-man tag punk/FTR vs the elite with punk/FTR going over. That’s something the buckaroos weren’t open for which they basically killed the hottest angle in wrestling and never open to talk to. The EVPs ladies and gentlemen.
Its definitely the Hangman match.. QT Marshall when responding to a fan who said it was probably him, said "nope, he asked for the match with me. He wanted someone who was safe in the ring and wouldnt go into business for himself".. thats sounds to me like the Hangman feud but idk the timeline with which match came first, just a guess on my part.

I also want to be devil’s advocate and say maybe he’s looking at his “wasted” matches from a standpoint of he feels the matches didn’t move the wrestlers involved any more over and didn’t move stories happening. But we know Punk and Petty is one you can’t say is lacking in his vocabulary.
I think CM Punk is referencing the question as "nothing worth to the business". You can have a match with your best friend or worst enemy, but if it doesn't contribute anything gain-wise to the business, then it wasn't worth doing. Essentially, if it made money or not. CM Punk is a business guy after all.

Yeah, it was in the build to Punk's match with MJF and he had to face FTR in a tag match, typical MJF gauntlet stuff, but MJF specified Punk couldn't have Darby Allin or Sting as his tag partner, so Punk's partner ended up being Jon Moxley in his first match back from rehab.
He definitely felt like All Out vs Moxley was a waste. He didn't care about the AEW world championship. He wanted to wrestle and get guys over, and Mox is someone who didn't need that.
Wardlow match was def wasted. Punk took like 15 power bombs and got annihilated by wardlow only to have MJF basically cost wardlow. But then they could not build anything for Wardlow off of that. That match should have made wardlow but they ruined it by not having anything planned for after wardlow beat MJF. Imo, wardlow and punk was one of the biggest wastes simply because i cant imagine its easy for a 40 year old punk to take 15+ powerbombs and to do it for basically nothing it turned out....wasted.
I love how Steve has to keep reiterating that this is for entertainment purposes. Opening with him stuffing muffins in his grill should make that self explanatory.
My 5 presumptions after looking at cagematch are... 1. Adam Page- Just based on their history it seems likely he considers any effort he put into a Page match wasted. 2. Moxley- They seemed to have a big fallout in AEW, and there was some screwy booking involved. 3. Bobby Fish- Kicked out of the GTS. Where's the lie? 4. John Silver- Just based on Punk's past disdain for comedy wrestling (despite being friends with Colt Cabana for a majority of his career), I could see Punk viewing a John Silver match as a waste. 5. Eddie Kingston- Both Punk and Eddie wear their hearts on their sleeves, so I assume there was some truth behind their animosity for one another. King and Punk were shooting shots at one another in promos before Page even cut his arguably forgettable needling promo. I put him low because I could see some begrudging respect between the two existing and Punk probably enjoying everything he did with Eddie despite the assumed hard feelings between the two.
Funny thing is Kingston and Punk don’t like each other. But luckily Eddie is one of the few grown ups in that company so he could put the childish behavior aside and do business with Punk. It was a fun match.
That All Out match between Mox/Punk was a terrible main event tbh, that and the squash match were both wasted potential imho. Then Bobby Fish and Hangman are also wasted
Fish, Page and the squash match with Moxley are 100 percent for sure. I think he probably wish he could have less tag team/trio matches. He probably thinks that he shouldn’t have wrestle with some of the younger guys with no built up. The problem with AEW is that they are just wrestling and the worst thing is that there are no build up and no psychology behind it. It looks like they are scripted fighting and it’s hard to suspend your disbelief. It’s really stupid watching two grown men play fight and they are making it obvious.
I don't think CM Punk was talking about who he was matched with, but more in the direction of wasted potential storylines, and the god awful booking. I personally think the Ricky Starks push with Punk was wasted, as instead of making him a solid singles threat, they decided to make him tag with Big Bill just so FTR can drop the belts to them and the Young Bucks beating them to get to be in the retirement match with Sting.
I think Spears vs Him is not one he would say is wasted. It built the MJF match alongside the Wardlow match. So I highly doubt that is a wasted match. Past that everything else I think is correct for it :)
I don't think Punk would feel like he wasted his match with Shawn Spears. Spears seems to be about the business, otherwise he would probably still be with AEW/ROH.
I just wanted to say here that the Kingston match can go either way cause of course he was going to win but imagine the story if he lost in a squash (since the story up to that point was he was barely getting by jobbers)
