Great video! I'm dying to get my own Renaissance lute and came across these so I'm really glad to have come across your review. Congrats on the new axe, it looks like a great buy!
I bought a Roosebeck 8 course about 2 years ago and love the workmanship and sound. I have a lot of trouble tuning it, and many of the pegs have broken. I removed all the treble strings in the pairs and lowered the bass strings to give me 2 octaves. I now have no more pegs to spare and hope I can order a set from the maker.
Yeah the tuning pegs are thin and hard to turn so I can totally see that happening. You might be able to go with beefier oud tuning pegs. I got a set of twelve for my oud for around $20.
I'm saving up for a 7 course travel Roosebeck lute, and your playing helps convince me that I'm making the correct decision in doing so. Thank you for the wonderful video!
That was the first time playing it for me in that video. I've since used it in a BudLight commercial and for a video game. It's almost paid for itself and I'm getting better each time I pick it up.
Fantastic fun ... and I'm confident that most the people who watch this won't be able to get anywhere near as much out of a Lute as you did first time round!
Hi! I'm looking to get my first lute and I just can't afford the ones at leluthdore that people seem to recommend. I'm considering buying the one you reviewed, it looks great and is half the price compared to the ones at leluthdore. As a follow up to this video one year later, I would love to hear your thoughts about this instrument. My main concerns are the movable frets and the tuning pegs. Did any of the frets move by accident and if so was it hard to move it back to it's original position? Are the tuning pegs easy/ok to use and do they keep tuning over time to a satisfactory level? Any other issues? Would you recommend it to someone else today? Any answers/thoughts on my concerns are greatly appreciated. Cheers
I totally understand not wanting to break the bank on a lute purchase. I’m happy with my Roosebeck lute though if I had it to do over again I would get the 6 course and not the 8 course. I didn’t want to lose the range of a standard classical so I tune the bottom two strings to F and D. But having 8 pairs of strings makes it difficult to just pick it up and play it like a guitar. I have to concentrate more. The friction tuners are much better than the ones on my oud. Still 1:1 “gear” ratio so to speak. But they stay in tune. I too was worried about the frets but that has not been an issue. They are very tight. I’m thinking of getting a saz with similar frets that do move more and are supposed to.
I had considered buying one of these but a lute player was "retiring" due to arthritis so I bought his lute off him. Made by Daniel Hachez (better known for his basses) in the 70s.
This is lovely! I'm looking into getting a lute for the first time, myself, and I was hoping you might be able to answer a question I just can't seem to find an answer for: What is the definitive difference between a travel lute and a standard Renaissance lute? I can't find any concrete answers, and I'm not sure which one to buy. Is it just durability? Any insight would be appreciated!
great video tom thanks i just bought a baglama saz love the sound of it and am just a beginner but the sound of a lute really has always been special take care
@@TomStrahle just got me a baby lute roosebeck descant as far as my mid east saz i got it for 170 including shipping have a plain oud that i m expecting soon from morocco the oud and saz off ebay the lute off reverb.com as im beginning i really appreciate your videos
Probably a 6 course lute of some kind. I wish now that's what I had gotten but I wanted to have the lower range. Roosebeck makes a 6 course lute. Plays like a guitar with a capo at the 3rd fret.
Not sure about that. So tough to try them out because very few, I know of none, stores carry them. I just took a shot on this one. It does what I need it to do. But the low end is lacking a bit on this one.
It's not a great one. However it sounds fairly legit on the game and film scores that I've used it on. I would love to be able to justify spending some serious coin on one. Not yet.

Over two years later I am considering this exact model from Roosebeck. Glad I found this.

Congratulations on your new Lute. Great video. Happy New Year.
I might give myself a thumbs down just because of my hair. Did I not know I was making a video!?!?

Good call. If I had it to do over again I'd probably get a six course lute.
That must have been a truly special present!
What a fantastic thing to have. Congratulations, enjoy!
Tom that was an amazing first time out of the box presentation. Your brain must have computer driven music gears in it. Love that twangy sound.

I don't know much about them but I suppose the difference would be scale (size), sustain and tone.
You can fret your Oud with strings and you have a medieval lute.
Love the mediaeval sound Tom!
Thank you Jill. I'm getting a little better at it with each passing session.

Was looking at those too. Can't have to many tools in the tool box!

That's a nice instrument... congrats and happy new year!
my old dream come true I juste order a 8 course travel lute roosebeck today,I Hope the best ,minor issue i can fix this on my work bench
I hope so too. What was wrong with it?
Great video man! Just got myself the 7 course descant lute from Amazon.
Congrats. It’s a totally different journey. I just spent half a week playing my lute on a game score. Great for my lute chops.
Cool! May your skills increase!
My Goodness! I want one of these! It's gotta be a goal of mine now!
BEST UA-cam HANDLE EVER!!!!
Tom Strahle Well thank you so much sir. But can hardly take the credit for it. God gave it to me in a dream. Crazy right? Haha.
Happy New Year! Damn I wanna get a lute too.
Haha. Sorry about that.
What is the best type of lute for a beginner, and where to get one?
Probably a 6 course lute of some kind. I wish now that's what I had gotten but I wanted to have the lower range. Roosebeck makes a 6 course lute. Plays like a guitar with a capo at the 3rd fret.
Tom Strahle thanks so much!
Damn! Now I'm gonna have to get a lute. I stopped after my tenor guitar and tried to call it a day... Got GAS again now!!
They also make smaller ones.
Love Lute.
What's the best lute to buy if I want a good bass to get that skyrim tavern bass sound?
Not sure about that. So tough to try them out because very few, I know of none, stores carry them. I just took a shot on this one. It does what I need it to do. But the low end is lacking a bit on this one.
Tax right-off! Lucky bastard! BTW, strings on Roosbecks are garbage - swap them for Aquila nylgut
You are correct. And sorry about that. Haha.
Agree completely with that. I love the Alabastros on my classical guitar.
Beautiful instrument. More than twice as many strings as my Ibanez 7 string, but will it djent? ;p
any chance of a lute blues album coming out? lol
Haha.
Felicidades Tom
Thank you!
@@TomStrahle Best of lucks in mastering your luth. Kindest regards
@@Marianofrv I'm trying. I'll never be a master but good enough for my work.
@@TomStrahle you evidently are having a lot of joy and growing as an artist and as a contemplative human being and that comes across in your videos
This was interesting.. Looks like your holding okay to me...
Tom goes all Gordon Sumner...
Did you get this at NAMM? lol
No, but I did get something. Will share it soon.
I am now ready for the RennFayre, lol
You are!
"I want it to stay in diatonic tuning so I'm not gonna move the fretts". Lutes have chromatic neck just as well, it's not like a dulcimer..
Correct. That’s what I meant.
@@TomStrahle Ah alright
Where did you buy your oud?
Google Lark in the Morning. That’s where I got the oud.
"it's a tax write-off" lol
Iam not here to offend anyone, the roosebeck lutes are kinda terrible, its from my perspective.

How is it a tax write off? Professional musician?
Exactly.
Your ads are horribly loud and annoying.
