    I've always thought playing traditional guitars for Metal was one of the coolest things. Early Heavy Metal was written and created on Les Paul's, Stratocasters, SG's, and even Telecasters as well.

    I find that rolling the tone down about half way is where the tele sounds the best. It takes away that high end scratchiness, but allows enough to cut through the mix. If you stack more gain on it and it gets muddier, just roll the tone up until you get enough high end. It’s also a good choice if you have two guitarists in the band because a tele paired with a humbucker loaded guitar sounds amazing. Honestly, I think a standard tele is the guitar to rule them all.

      I'd say a moonshine overdrive or tubescreamer with a clean blend knob works wonders. You can split the single clean/dirty however you want and just click the switch on or off. Then you can be consistent with the settings

      What I usually do to get a bigger “growl” sound out of my telecaster is tune a half step down, turn the gain to three, switch to the middle position, and then roll the tone knob all the way down. It’s sounds like a really deep rumble.

    • @clanwaddell5628
      @clanwaddell5628 9 місяців тому

      That's the key to mastering a Tele. Using your tone and volume knobs to get a good sound. I also find the middle setting is noise cancelling and almost humbucker sounding. I love my telecaster

    I have over 40 guitars in my collection, and I have found that any Guitar can be used for any style of music that suits your fancy. Some may require a little eq tweaking to find your sound, but that's why we invest in good amps and effects. Obviously I'm a fan of guitars!! A Tele suits you great, Jason! And when you rip a scorching hard rock/Metal lead on a country looking Guitar, it has an extra shock value to it because of the visual. Great video!

    • @jmacc9876
      @jmacc9876 2 роки тому +1

      A tele and a strat can kind of do it all (except for getting up to 23 and 24 frets, or dive bombing an octave without a Floyd Rose), but if you place a quality graphic eq pedal to tame the top end and push mids and bass you can get great hard and heavy metal tones for sure depending on your amp pedals and stuff. I agree most guitars can do whatever you might need them to except maybe like Gibson ES-175 with a Charlie Christian pickup really wouldn't do metal.

      @@jasonstallworth Years ago there was this hardcore band outta Nashville called With Hell At Our Backs, I don't know what happened to em but I saw em live once and one of the guitar players had a Tele while all the other guys at that show had like, EMG-equipped humbucker guitars. That Tele cut through like nothing else.
      Teles are just the ultimate swiss army knife of guitars. Guitar players just have a dumb habit of hearing with their eyes.

    • @jetcheneau5811
      @jetcheneau5811 2 роки тому +3

      What I like about the Tele is that it's an incessantly bright guitar and it demands that you do the diligence of reeling it in by dialing in your amp a different way and actually paying attention to the sound rather than the numbers on the dials. It benefits from manipulation of the volume and tone knobs as well.

    Totally agree about the clarity of the pickups. I made a 9.3k bridge pickup for my tele and ended up taking it out and making a 6.5k pickup. The attack is so much more aggressive and I can downtune the guitar like crazy without losing clarity. I used to think higher output pickups meant more "heavy" but I couldn't have been more wrong. The higher output your pickups are, the more clarity you lose and after about 11k ohms they just start sounding like jazz pickups, depending on the magnets.

    • @jasonstallworth
      @jasonstallworth  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah, I've played guitars with super high output pickups and the clarity can indeed suffer! That's why I like my Ibanez RG1570 with passive pickups so much! And I really like these Tele pickups!

    I love my Telecaster and I love it for metal. Single coil pickups can be noisy if a high gain amp is at a high volume. My recommendation if you are thinking about doing a tele without a mini humbucker, you could go with the player plus tele with the noiseless single coil. It will get you that clear tone, but cut back on the high volume hiss in a live situation. The silver smoke finish looks particularly metal.

It is amazing for metal and even with the fatter strings tuned down still has major clarity. I use a noise gate very lightly for metal but anything gothic or country doesn't need it (even with a compressor). It also thumps, not like a les paul, but like a tele should really. It still has low end, just more high end than a humbucker and in all the right places too. Love tele's for heavy music! Awesome video Jason!

    I tried S style loaded with humbuckers, mid punchy, for our band's set list, usually using my T style (but in service currently). I'm amazed at how my T one seem to stand out in the mix when needed for solos. It's not just the pickup you use, that bridge plate and pickup base plate seem to contribute more to that distinguished tonality. Awesome video! I had a Tele in college I used for all kinds of stuff. It handled Indie/Punk, was decent in the mix for synth stuff, did southern rock twang well and it absolutely crushed it playing old Metal. I remember being STUNNED how great that guitar handled Metal tones with the stock single coil pickups! What I loved, was having that tone knob to roll back on the Tele, something not all Strats have where you're stuck with the bridge pickup being too bright sounding for hard rock and metal. I didn't know it back then, but that turned out to be the one guitar I regretted parting with, and mine was just a cheap Squier Affinity model. I really didn't know how much I missed my Tele until moving to an ES-335 type guitar. After years of going through Strats and Les Pauls, the ES reminded me of that twang I used to love from my Tele and the consistency it has. I can't wait to get a new Tele this year and will be playing some old school Metal on it.

    I pick my tele with 'single coils' ove my others everytime (stacked seymour duncan vintage set to be precise so hum free)... The clarity is just something else at any level of gain.
    When I record I use my solar a2.6 TBR and Chapman Pro modern ML3 HH tele for the more saturated down tuned parts with a slightly cleaner tele sound as my main parts in post hardcore/midwest emo music but could happily use my tele for everything. Emo style playing really brings the tele alive I have found too... the twinkly clean parts and the higher gain parts, it just works like a charm all round!!

    I fully agree. I love both of my teles. Cant beat it for metal. They just bite right in and growl if want it too. They have a punch other guitars including a strat just dont have. Thay arent just grandpaws Tele. they pull jazz, country, blues, classic rock off beautifully. But people are shocked when they see you do metal with a tele. They have a personality all their own. Tele owners get it. Other guitars like ibanez rock too but a tele just stands by itself. I like my gibsons , Strat, and Ibanezes as well but hands down my teles i LOVE.

    If I wasn't so attached to a floyd rose style bridge, I could be happy with a tele. I don't even find a tele ugly if it is given a superstrat style paint job (black pickguard with a hot-neon color outside). But I gotta have my floating trem: perfect intonation vibrato up and down, pitch acrobats with natural harmonics, flutters, dives, double-stop-banshee-shrieks, door-spring notes, etc.
    [edit] Perhaps you should get a Tele and keep that one in a lower tuning (Eb, D, C#, etc.)

I only sat down noodling on it a couple of times and since then it haven't been touched. I never got rid of it, though. When I finally picked up guitar playing in 2018, I got myself a Epiphone Les Paul Special II - LE instead. A few month ago I thought it would be fun to clean the dust off the A5, put on a new set of strings and for the first time actually play it. Unfortunatly it have some issues with the pickups or whatever. I have checked the wirings and it looked OK. Maybe a splash of electrocleaner will do the trick, or else I have to replace the wiring and pick-ups. Since the original pick-ups haven't been available for decades, it will be need for remodelling to fit new ones, though.

Strange thing is that when I start playing on an amp sim I seem to play differently. I tend to hold the strings lighter and I can play better than when I am on the real amp. It changes the way I play. So I might practice on the amp sim for a while and see if it improves my playing.

    The Fender Player series is getting good reviews , so that might be an option looking for a new Tele.
    I have two cheap Tele copies now, one is H-H the latest one is the classic setup. I'm preparing an Esquire mod for the last one. But I'm impressed by them. They're not too heavy, the neck feels great (modern C but not super flat), access to electronics is all through the top, hard tail bridge. They just feel solid, comfortable and fun to play and that is what you want; an instrument that's inviting and not an uphill struggle. Teles are know for the twang, and it's true that I back off the tone more than on other guitars. But that tonal difference is what gives another colour to the palette.
    Also, if you get a good neck pickup, you can get close to that strat neck sound without needing a strat which is a huge bonus!
