Christa Deguchi is so impressive. Although English is her 2nd language, she speaks with a perfect Western Canadian accent. Canada's Judoka are elated to have a team mate of Christa's ability and character. She was shut out of any chance to make the Japanese National team and was invited to come and represent the Country of her Dad's nationality. It will be a powerful message to Japan and the world - for her to face and beat her Japanese rival- Tsukasa Yoshida, in the 57kg Gold Medal Final in Tokyo next year.
She wasn't shut out of the Japanese national team. The thing is, for major tournaments like the Olympics, she would always have to compete for a place in the team, since each country can only have one judoka per weight class. So the risk of not making it to the Olympics is huge if you are fighting against other Japanese judokas for one place in the team. Switching to Canada, chances of making to the Olympics is much greater.
Her dream came true!🇨🇦🇯🇵🥇
Now Olympic champion 2024🎉🎉🎉
