Yeah.. it's still dang great coming of age TV. Great acting, great characters, super funny, and a ton of genuinely insightful life lessons. It's definitely a cut above most other nostalgic shows!
It's easy to make fun, but this is actually how a lot of cults operate. They love to prey on kids with insecurities by first listening to them, then giving them a ton of extremely positive attention. This is a technique called "love bombing" and yes, it often does involve excessive hugging and using the subject's name a lot. The point is to form a strong, positive, relationship with the subject as soon as possible before you start to use their insecurities against them and drive a wedge between the subject and their family/friends however you can. Yeah, it all happens way too fast in this episode (and ends up pushing a overtly Judeo-Christian message), but it's clear that somebody at least did their research when it came to representing the cult, and that's something you rarely ever see in mainstream TV.
Yeah. I'll be honest - as summarized by this video, anyways, the family seems more cultish than the cult. It doesn't sound like the cult actually asked him to do anything except be nice to people, whereas the family kinda pushed their religion onto the kid. The true negative effects of a cult weren't really highlighted.
roguishpaladin I can sort of see how this video summary might give that impression, but nah, in the actual show this was one of the *rare* times religion was ever mentioned, and the Matthews family wasn't cultish at all :) It is true that on the surface the cult depicted seems relatively harmless, but I think that's the point F1NGER was making: a lot of cults *might* very well start off seeming almost positive in nature. Regardless of whether or not we actually see that last part, the very fact that they were isolating kids and manipulating them into not trusting anyone else in their life is what's dangerous.
As has been said, this is one of, if not the only time that God has been brought up in this show. Religion was never a part of the Mathew's family dynamic. and the goal wasn't for Mr. Mathews to try to get Shawn to believe in God, he was simply getting him to question what he believed in, trying to get him to think for himself, and ask questions, figure out what his world view is.
Darrin Johnson Not to mention John Turner makes a appearance in Girl Meets World and is the Super Attendant of School in New York and gave Cory his Job as a teacher.
Love the part where Alan tells Mr. Mack he'll kill to protect Shawn from people like him, backing down only when Amy tells him that Mack "would love a lawsuit"...considering that Cory's dad was once a member of the US Navy boxing team, he may well have made good on his threat!
That could have been an oblique reference to the folks at Westboro Baptist Church who protest funerals of soldiers, trying to get people to pick fights with them so they can sue and get payoffs.
It was also about Scientology, which was really gaining popularity in Hollywood. There's even a joke about "the celebrity room" at The Centre. In fact, Ethan Suplee, who played "Frankie" on BMW, is a Scientologist.

Wrong: Mr. Turner somehow ended up becoming superintendent of NYC schools or some crazy shit. But whatever, this show called out Scientology wayyyyy before Leah Remini.
Actually Mr Turner goes into the off screen void where every other forgotten or dropped character of the show went after they were written out of the show. Meekus proves that it exists in the high school graduation episode where he calls out to Mr Turner.
Moral of the story: If you're introduced to a physical group led by Stiles from the 1985 Teen Wolf movie, call the DEA to track down his brother's stash.
“Shawn says he doesn’t have the luxury to believe in a warm house with a warm family even though he’s at that house with that family every fucking day” I’m glad someone finally said it!!!!!
Which is funny because Ben Savage starred in another ABC series (Wild Palms, Oliver Stone's attempt at Twin Peaks) that went after Scientology. Only in that show he became the cult's leader after his secret father died and became a hologram. The folks at ABC must have done a lot of Ketamine in the 90's.
Cults were big in the news in the 90s, because of the Heaven's Gate cult and the cult in Waco, Texas and all the 50 billion other ones that were on the news every other day back then. The 90s were to cults as the 2010s are to mass shootings.

love em
clever1er no I haven't, I'll check it out now
"A basement full of hugs and off-brand soda".
I know it was trying to be funny, but this video got lowkey deep
"A way hotter version of sean, but with a comb" Dead.
Whoever writes for this channel is effing hilarious. These very special episode videos and the Zack Morris is trash videos always crack me up 😂
...because they love him. And "the center" is Koo Koo Banana Bread Cray Cray....
Wrong: Mr. Turner somehow ended up becoming superintendent of NYC schools or some crazy shit. But whatever, this show called out Scientology wayyyyy before Leah Remini.
No, scientology is not a cult. The center is a cult. I want to be very clear. This is about the center.
@@YAYCONFORMITY scientology is very much a cult lol
@@YAYCONFORMITY Spoken like a true cultist
This is INCREDIBLY ironic as Shawn's actor, Rider Strong, would then play a demon in Star Vs. The Forces Of Evil.
Oh yeah, that's ALSO a Disney show.
I need more of this in my life
“Shawn says he doesn’t have the luxury to believe in a warm house with a warm family even though he’s at that house with that family every fucking day” I’m glad someone finally said it!!!!!
I love Boy Meets World, and this was my favorite episode.
Hey its Stylez from Teenwolf guy! 😎.. hes was a charismatic guy i could see him as a Cult leader.. Shawn should not drink that soda!!
I don’t know how I found these videos but I’m hooked lol. I can’t stop watching all of these. Wait maybe I’m in a cult now....
Mr. Turner turns up again in _Girl Meets World_ .
Gabriel M lol no..
“his friends who care bail on him to go make out”
hahhahaha
"Even tho he's at that house with that family EVERY f*cking day" 😭
A basement full of hugs and off brand cola 😭
Yeah I cry like a b**** when Turner squeeze his hand back
This is a very thinly-veiled swipe at Scientology.
He survived they even reference him in the final episode saying that him and minkus was on the other side of the school campus (off screen) the actor left to do his own show which failed
Sherry looks like a combination of Shawn and Topanga 😁
idk, as soon as they said my name for like the 3rd maybe 4th time I'd have been like "something weird is going on here and if you say my name again I'm out"
The center is coo-coo banana bread cray-cray lmao
Who writes this?! I’m DYINGGG 😂😂😂
Sierra Sawyers if you write zack morris is trash the writer will favorite it. I didn't even tag funny or die and i just wrote some random message about zack morris is trash and a verified twitter that says works at funny or die favorite it
Daniel Drischoll
“Feeny returns to say Mr Turner has been centered...in the middle of the goddamn street” 😂😂 dude that’s fuckin hilarious 🤣
If they're going to do Very Special Episodes, they should definitely do the bicycle episode of Diff'rent Strokes.
I think that one is far too grim to even talk about, let alone have Funny Or Die spoof it.
OMG! Lord, no&
Tom Leonard, good news for you. They did that one now.
@jason lewis it is a dessert
Mr. Turner likely didn't kill himself. He probably just died because all his organs were ruptured in that motorcycle crash.
Bring A Very Special Episode back!
