Please use flux. You get cold solder joints when you attach a new terminal with no existing solder tinning since there will be an oxide layer on the new terminals. Those cold solder joints could become problematic in the future. Also, you would not have had the flecks of loose solder with fresh flux.
it's crappy clickbait, this will still die and fail eventually unless you test it all the time or save the game to some other hardware, this doesn't fix it indefinitely it's the same thing as when it's produced.
If only it was 15 years. I'm considering battery holders because the last tabbed battery I put in my Crystal version died after 3 years! 🙄 Having a battery holder would allow me to just use trusted batteries from the store next door, rather than having to order those special batteries from some online shop, which may be old and semy-depleted already by the time I get them.
Do the CR1616 retainer fit in GBA games? I know Pokémon Emerald also maybe the Ruby and Sapphire have CR1616 batteries in them. I’d want to put a retainer in those cartridges.
You can absolutely use the cr1616 retainer in GBA games. (I use them for all Pokemon games too) I did it for my copy of Metroid zero mission. You definitely want to push it down flat. May even use the best sandpaper on the bottom to thin it out a hair. Otherwise the cartridge will slightly bulge. Doesn't affect gameplay but yeah.
Honestly, I was looking for a guide on how to mod my GB and GBC carts so I would NEVER NEED A BATTERY OF ANY KIND EVER AGAIN... But sadly Google isn't showing me anything I'm looking for...
@@awsomestleaperd78 A rechargeable battery would be nice. Something that means I won't have to replace the battery, or a dual battery system, or SOMETHING to fix the issue...
@@RAPTOR948 it could be done.. until you account for space, which unfortunately can not be altered in any way without causing issues with plugging the cartridge in

Got any tips for repairing a lifted/broken pad? I did this on my brother's copy of Pokemon Sapphire, and the upwards pressure from the battery holder lifted one of the pads clean off. I've heard of some sort of special adhesive, as well as possibly using a jumper wire, but I'm curious if you have a preferred fix.
if its the battery pad, its very likely there is a copper area nearby that you can scrape the soldermask away and connect too instead. If you still have the lifted pad, you can stick this back down with some adhesive and restore the connection (again with some scraping) If you dont then i would use something like copper tape instead of pad
It's better in three ways: - future battery swaps don't require soldering - makes it so you can get a replacement battery at just about any local store, rather than needing to place on order online - those tabbed batteries are more expensive and sometimes only last a couple of years, because they already sat on a shelf for years or weren't fresh (recycled) batteries to begin with. That third point is the most important one to me
I’ve got a better way to avoid all this: just grab the Roms and be done with it. No more PCB boards, no more soldering, no more tripping the quality of your stupid label. Done!
Playing on the original cartridge will always be cooler than playing on an emulator/flash card! Especially when you've played on it in you childhood already .

Yet you manually looked up a video about installing a battery on physical hardware... right. Just say you're too broke to afford the games and move on.
Except when you play a Pokemon ROM and you find a shiny... unable to bring it with you to future gens. Pokemon is the only series I keep all my physical games.
only in the last 40 seconds do you admit this is just like any other replacement and you will eventually have to do it again, clickbaity title and false.
How is it clickbait? He says the CR1616 works (I've recently done a few pokemon yellow games this way). He's only saying the Cr2025 doesn't work yet. Which is what i came here for to double check as I've tried and failed with 2 different versions (they weren't specifically made for gameboy games). So yeah. CR1616 works. The video isn't clickbait. The CR2025 doesn't work but at least he shows you it being installed correctly but sadly that one (of two different battery holders in the video) doesn't work. Get off your high horse kid

Great video. Any links to the CR2025 flex pcb? I can't find it on Aliexpress nor eBay. Thanks in advance.
Yeah, that would be very useful information...

Too bad this wouldn't fit on a boktai cartridge. Anyway, I guess a CR1616 just for RTC on Boktai game will endure for many years, right?
A nice alternative for those who don't care about loosing the save state.
Can I use a battery holder for Pokemon crystal, gold, & silver? They use CR2025. Not sure if it'll fit tho
For my pokemon blue and pokemon gold i used the cr1616 battery holder, should i change it because im not sure if this would effect something?

Where to buy. I bought one like the one for CR1616 but the metal is thin and easily broken.

Maybe not, since the MaskROM chip is usually under the battery.

What about carbon aerogel or other super capacitors that are thin form factor instead.

This is used to extract the resulting smoke. Like a little vacuum cleaner.

If you're concerned about that just solder in a new tabbed battery
If you're concerned about that, you shouldn't be buying video games.
