I needed this, my tomatoes are out of control 😂. Thanks for sharing Lucas
Great! Thanks for watching Adriana!
Great video & helpful information! Roma & Cherry tomatoes you can pull off side shoots & re-plant them
Thanks for the great explanation on how to find the "main" stem at a fork. Often that "sucker" appears to me more vigorous than the main, so the trick is always to find where the first flowers are forming (as you explained). Though I guess if you cut off the wrong one, the worst consequence is that you'll just have one fewer clusters of tomatoes by the end of the season. I had a weird situation where a flower / fruit cluster had a sucker coming off it. Bizarre.. I'd read somewhere that it could occur, but I forget what the explanation of how and why.
You're very welcome Peter! I don't know if cutting off the wrong one would necessarily yield one fewer flower cluster, but it would definitely be higher up on the plant. I have had that situation with flower clusters having a sucker on it as well. Simply the growth habit of the variety I think. I find it happens more with the heirloom varieties.
Your garden is looking great!
Love your channel. FYi - some growers claim that a true FORK (not sucker) should be left alone and should result in up to 2X total production from that point onward (still removing all suckers). Like you, we also trellis our 19 tomato plants.
So far, in our garden that has proven true this growing year - which is our first knowing and trying this technique. Naturally, extra care to fertilize properly may be slightly enhanced as there is more plant requirements.
Thanks John! I believe this this to be true. However, I am going for a single stemmed architecture as I am using 2' spacing to which I find to be perfect for one stemmed plants. I always say, how you prune is directly related to how you plan on spacing and supporting your plants! 😀
Hi Lucas, I have the same situation with a beefsteak tomato in my garden. I didn't know what to do, so left it alone, hoping for the best. Thanks for the solution. Bamboozled is a great way to describe, at times, gardening. Your garden looks great and well tended. Hope all the front yard gardeners and gardens are enjoying the summer! 😎🌻🐝
Thank you Tricia, my fingers are crossed for you beefsteak! Here's to the 2022 growing season!!!
Thank you for the information. God bless!
Love you, Lucas! 😁❤💚🍅
Good to know someone out there does! 😉
I don’t prune any suckers near the top because I want all the tomatoes I can get. I prune everything halfway and below though.
Thank you Lucas. Great information.
Hola que bueno seria si lo explicas en español
My Black Krim and Roma tomatoes have blossom end rot. I tried so hard!! 😭
Awww sorry to hear. Those are heirlooms which are more prone to blossom end rot. I recommend adding a fertilizer that's high in calcium to your soil one you've pulled up the plants, dig it in, and let it settle over the winter.
@LucasGrowsBest,have you try growing the,"Black Strawberry tomatoes or Orange Accordion tomatoes " & "Smokin'Ed's Carolina Reaper peppers ,Ghost peppers or the Mad Hatter peppers" variety,y/n?.
Out of those I've growing the Carolina Reapers and Ghost Peppers!
Nice video! --What planting zone are you in?
Thanks Marilyn! I'm growing in zone 5b!
Esse tipo de poda pode ser feita em qualquer variedade de tomateiro?
Apenas em variedades indeterminadas/vinificação! Não determina.
tomatoes are very much like cannabis
Interesting! So I should trim suckers there as well then?
@@single_use_planet_ depends how early you top your plant. Do you have a plant now and if yes, how many nodes tall is it?
@@mosampson8862 i had one grow randomly from a soil mix but it seemed like the wrong gender plant? And now I got one from my neighbor which is about lile 30 cm tall, it doesn't have any suckers on it yet tho.
My biggest problem is being able to tell if the plant is right or not, if I can harvest the goods or if it's the wrong gender
@@mosampson8862 oh nodes tall, I don't have an eye on it now since it's the middle of the night but about maybe 2 or 3 I think
