I feel that Sophia Coppola's acting was much better in The Godfather Part II than in Part III. In Part II, the baptismal/Massacre scene she seemed more believable, natural, motivated and directional.

Not having Tom Hagen in The Godfather III was a huge mistake! That character was essential in not only the films, but also in all of the novels period! Robert Duvall was worth the money because he is a brilliant actor. No one can ever replace Duvall. He was awesome in those first two films. He was intelligent, articulate, slick, and cool as fuck! The ultimate Mob Lawyer! The blackmail scene that Hagen had with senator Geary at the bordello that Fredo owned in Godfather II, is fuckin' legendary!
Characters that were important that were alive are Mike Corleone, Tom Hagan and sister Connie. Kay was thrown out of the family so you save $1m there. You get rid of Elli Wallach, George Hamilton, John Savage and now you have money to offer Duvall.

Not slicking back Michael Corleone's hair is easily one of the biggest mistakes of the 3rd film. His spiked up hair makes him look absolutely ridiculous. Not to mention in the 3rd film Al Pacino just acted as Al Pacino, he didn't channel any characteristics or even vocal tones of Michael Corleone.

This is probably one of the best arguments I've heard as to why The Godfather III didn't live up to expectations. Sure, there were other problems but Tom's abscence is definitely felt in the movie. Also that fact about Robert Duvall being an Oscar winner at that time really put things into perspective. Great video!

I respect Robert duvall decision...the studio screwed marlon brando in the first movie hence he refused to return for flashback scene in the second movie.
It does suck knowing that Diana Keaton was given 1.5 million and Duvall was not even offered the same. An Oscar winner good for Duvall for standing his ground and too bad he was not in it but, at least Francis did fight for him which is good to know that he did support him in some level of degree.
The one scene that always sticks with me is when Sonny(The Hot Head who didn’t Give a F**k,And was a Badass)Said something like”You’re not really part of the Family etc,etc” to Tom then IMMEDIATELY Checked himself and apologized.It showed how much he really respected Tom.I could be wrong but I think it was Sonny who “brought him home one day and he never left”as a young kid or orphan.

Whenever I watch Godfather III I can't help but feel I'm watching a band missing their lead guitarist. Even Coppola himself had said the film feels incomplete without Duval. How do u low ball Robert Duvall, one of the finest actors of his generation? He was the clear #2 character to bring back. And the film suffered for it. A clear cash grab by Paramount when you can't give Robert Friggen Duval an extra million and proper time to get the damn thing right.

I'm glad you mentioned that Duvall's absence damaged the film far more than Sophia Coppola's presence. I agree entirely. Centering the film around the relationship between Michael and Tom (the last great surviving relationship from the first film) would have moved the focus to the chemistry of these two greats alongside Diane Keaton. Having an actress of the quality of Winona Ryder instead of Sophia would also have helped, of course, but the emphasis on her character was still something that drew attention away from the themes and characters that made the first two films so good.
I feel the Godfather Epic is the best way to experience the whole story and in that way it feels like a Trilogy. Vito's Rise to Power, Vito Transferring Power to Michael, Michael solidifying his power but at the cost of his family.

Robert Duval had me since all those years ago, when he played Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird. What a powerful actor. If he were cast in Godfather III with a focus on the conflicting alpha personalities of Michael and Tom, he would have chewed up the scenery.
If I was Al Pacino, I could demand the company to pay Duvall more to join the episode III, it is even worthy to sacrifice a portion of salary to pay him to join.
I always felt the Michael we know from the first two films is too unrecognisable in GF3, he seems to have had some kind of personality transformation. Gone is the brooding planner, and Al Pacino seems to be half way to his 'Hoo Ha!' Scent of a Woman role.
That highlights one of the big problems of the film: It was a nostalgia romp. They brought back so many actors from the other movies for cameos. The heart just wasn't in the writing. The movie, "Rocky Balboa" was the exact same way.
I have always loved Robert Duval ever since I saw him in a mini series "Ike" about Gen. Dwight Eisenhower during WWII. I never see much mention of it, but I loved it.
Andy Garcia came off sounding like Vinnie Barbarino of “Welcome Back, Kotter” in this extremely disappointing film. I think William Shatner must have been impressed with Andy Garcia’s overacting in “Godfather 3.” I hope writer David Chase does much better with “The Many Saints of Newark.”

You were perfectly on target until you said he carried the first two movies. That’s rubbish…It was a masterclass in performances from each and every single actor. There is not an example of a better cast in those two movies ever, by any measure.
Tom Hagen is one of my favourite characters in the three movies and as you say you notice him not being there. Unlike the past 2 movies characters where killed or did not appear in the second movie like the actor that played Clemensa (excuse spelling)was killed off between movies because the actor wanted more money (sounds familiar) so Coppalla didn't use him and replaced him with another character and it worked. This time though with an actor like Robert Duval who is in both movies. Your going to think "where is Robert Duval? why is that tv actor George Hamilton in his place as another character? I just saw him (Hamilton) on Colombo as a TV presenter who kills a guy who is blackmailing him for being in a porno movie and maybe thats why they called him BJ. Honestly they filmed both that episode of Colombo and God Father 3 around the same time. I know Hamilton has done movies but he is always just a TV actor for me.
The “your mistress” Michael referenced in Godfather II was Sonny’s widow. That definitely contributed to the tension between the two and would’ve been fun in the third installment.
I think that both Al Pacino and Diane Keaton should have strongly supported Robert Duvall in getting the reasonable salary that he was demanding. Not only because of Duvall's incredible acting abilities, but also, his part as the Corleone Consigliary was so important to Godfather III being as successful as the first two. Tom Hagen was a MAJOR necessity.
I didn't know that Duvall was an Oscar winner by this time while Pacino wasn't. Makes perfect sense as to why he refused the $1M offer. It was an offer he had to refuse.

The flashback at the end of Pt2... Jesus god,, the most incredible leap of logistic movie making,, imagine seeing that in the cinema and not knowing it was coming ,, and if , imagine, you were obsessed with Somny and James Caans performance from Pt1.. you , or whoever that person was , would have been blown clean way out sideways beyond any cinemagoer in history at that point. It seems simple now, but I love to crystalize it how it must have been. Incredible innovation.

He's a good actor, but he's not Pacino. He would have done it for 1.6MM. It was foolish not to up his offer by half a mill. It would have been a different and far better movie .

I’m watching a remastered version of Godfather 3. CODA The Death of Michael Corleone. Coppola when in and recut it. Changed beginning and ending. I’m only 30 minutes in, but already much better. The other seemed disjointed. It’s on Paramount+

It made perfect sense for Michael Corleone not to have Tom Hagan even if he had not ‘died’. Michael Corleone was cleaning house to become respectable so wouldn’t want a lawyer linked to his violent past. So a slick new lawyer played by George Hamilton was more appropriate to negotiate with the Vatican Bank . So the financial wrangle that had Duvall dropped worked to the film’s benefit.
thats a great argument , but i think they would have used a slik new lawyer for the negotiations , but behind the scenes the likes of a tom hagen advising would have been likely.
If the time was taken to develop the plot better, with Duvall and Winona Ryder in the film AND I heard Gene Hackman had a role offered, then, this could have been an EPIC film....
Duvall was red hot then I remember. Lonesome Dove was a big hit. Up there with John Voight and Christopher Walken as non-italian superstar actors. He would've been worth the 1.5-2mill he wanted.
Did you notice Clemenza puts sugar in the sauce as it’s cooking on the stove? I remember my Italian grandmother used to also do that; the Sicilians did that to take the bitterness out of the pasta sauce. Buon appetito!

Of course being Italian, I'm an expert in preparing it and until my dear mother was alive, it was a big tradition in my family cooking it during 1 or 2 days time, usually in September when "S. Marzano tomatoes" are at their best. In the last years we made it, I helped a lot my mother in this quite long procedure, she had also a good storing space living in the country. Usually on Saturday morning we went to the open market, where a direct deal with farmers was possible, we bought about 150 kg of San Marzano's tomatoes and all the other stuff as basilico, garlic and onions (with a precise ratio) and then we started the preparation that consists of about 4 or 5 phases during the next two days. In this way we prepared an amount of wonderful pommarola (about 120-130 jars) enough for about 4 families: mine, my mother, my brother and my aunt ones. This sauce can stay in the void controlled jars for months and years (usually it lasted until the next summer ^_^) and is superb with pasta: you open the jar (once opened it lasts about 4 or 5 days in the fridge), put 3 or 4 spoons of sauce in the pot with the just cooked spaghetti (or other types), add oil and butter, heat and turn them for 1 minute and the perfection is reached finally adding Parmigiano on them! 😉😁

I helped her as well at Thanksgiving get togethers and Christmas because she had bad arthritis and couldn’t stir stuff like she used to. She loved playing rummy and other card games with my brother and me when we were together. She made the same sugar cookies for years, but we had to stir up the dough because she couldn’t do it anymore. Thanks mom! We’ll be able to keep several of our favorites she used to make as well!

She always denied it, but I have some books and notes filled with her recipes hand written. I think I could start an activity using them. 😁 My sister in law is English and when she came to Italy 34 years ago she just knew spaghetti (the name, not how to prepare them...) and in some years of practice, she learned also a lot from my mother. 😉😁 It's important to keep these traditions, every country has some. 😉
It seems that Coppola could have fought the studio to make sure Duval appeared in the film if he really wanted him much like he did with Brando. To hear Coppola sounds as if he had very little control over the film. Films he produced and directed in the past he had a great deal of control over. Paramount had been begging him For years to do Godfather 3. Hard to believe he had that little control over the picture.
I believe another big reason as to why it seems Coppola had so little control over Part III compared to the first Godfather films he did is I believe he was trying to get another film or other films made but couldn't get financing for them for some reason or another so the studio basically made him an offer ( that he couldn't refuse, lol) that if he agreed to do Part III, he would get financing for those other projects. I'm not sure what those said projects were but I do know that not long after Part III he did an excellent version of Dracula, so perhaps that was one of them?

Until today, I remember the first time I watched the third movie. I was surprised that Tom Hagen was gone. Barely mentioned. I wish they had paid Duvall the money he wanted. The 3rd movie was eh-ok, I suppose but never be on the same level as the first two. Such a shame.

I'm a film watching veteran since I was 5 years old. The film part 3 wasn't very good, but it wasn't bad either. Remember the first two were made in the 70's so the quality was much better.
It’s not hating, you just feel sorry for the poor girl. The acting is excruciating, and it’s now there for the ages. No matter how many Lost In Translations she makes, the biography will always be bookended by the Godfather fiasco. Personally, I always watch G3 in French-the voice acting almost makes up for the silliness. Coppola the director always indulged in nepotism; sooner or later it was bound to come back and bite him on the ass.
I heard that Francis Ford Coppola became exasperated with Richard Castellano’s demands regarding Clemenza’s lines in the film. So, in came Frankie “Five Angels” Pentangelli.
Yes, number 3 should have pitted Tom, against Michael, possibly over their offspring. A confrontation was hinted at in GF 2. And only Tom had the brains and balls to win that. He was the more interesting character in the series.
Family is such a central theme of the Godfather films and Tom Hagen was one of the few remaining original family members. Hagen was a great character played by a great actor. His presence would have hugely deepened and legitimized the third film with all kinds of story points and character moments. Duval was crucial. Rather than insult him, they should have paid Duvall what he was worth.
Sofia Coppola did an excellent job. She had a fresh innocence which actually added to the film's effectiveness. Part 3 may not be quite as good as its predecessors but it is still a damn good film.
A missed opportunity with 3 was how the relationship between Mike and Tom would be years down the road. The interactions with Connie and Kay are some of the most redeeming parts of 3.
Robert Duvall is a world class actor, one of the best of all time and they should have instantly came back with a much better offer for him to reprise his role as Tom Hagen for Godfather 3.
These details are amazing! Paying Keaton 50% more than Duvall was an insane insult. Duvall is a superior actor (even if he underplays) and Hagen's absence was a massive hole in the story. It was one of the main reasons 3 stumbled and Paramount and Coppola have been paperingr it over ever since. The cash-grab new version just brought more the issue back again.
You underestimate Keaton’s acting. She is understated in the role of Kay, and a necessary antidote to Pacino’s awkwardness with women. Superior is relative.
@@jcoltrane8976 Of course my opinion is totally subjective - career-wise I always saw Duvall's understated style to be more compelling and believable (more in the style of a character actor than a robust leading man). Obviously the studio decided to pay Keaton more due to her greater "marquee value", but I can see why Duvall wasn't interested in taking a considerably lesser fee. What we'll never know is how much better 3 might have been if Hagen's calm presence had been beside Michael.
Michael Corleone never liked Tom Hagen, during the reception for Connie and Carlo's wedding he told Kay; "He (Tom) is a good lawyer, not an Italian but a good man" later after the assassination attempt at the estate, Micheal told Tom what he always wanted to hear. "I have always respected you... your my brother" and this was said to get him to do what he wanted him to do. Michael then yells at him after returning from Cuba..."Why can't you give me a straight answer anymore!" When talking about killing Hyman Roth, Michael dressed him down in front of the capo's of Al Neri and Rocko Lampone by saying; "I thought you where going to tell me your taking the vice presidency of the house of hotels in Reno, I thought you where going to tell me that." Meaning, Michael wanted him to go and probably set the offer up so he would leave. When Tom reacted that he doesn't have to tell Michael about "All the jobs he has turned down" which means Michael has done this before. If Tom doesn't want to play ball he can take his wife, family.... and his mistress and move to Reno. Just my take
The biggest mistakes of godfather 3 was not having duvall in it Having sofia coppola in it (it was supposed to be winona ryder) Having andy garcia's vincent estranged from Michael at the beginning like michael barely knows his existence they should of made them have more of a relationship together it would of made it more believable for michael to be grooming him to become the next godfather

Whenever I watch Godfather III I can't help but feel I'm watching a band missing their lead guitarist. Even Coppola himself had said the film feels incomplete without Duval. How do u low ball Robert Duvall, one of the finest actors of his generation? He was the clear #2 character to bring back. And the film suffered for it. A clear cash grab by Paramount when you can't give Robert Friggen Duval an extra million and proper time to get the damn thing right.

I'm glad you mentioned that Duvall's absence damaged the film far more than Sophia Coppola's presence. I agree entirely. Centering the film around the relationship between Michael and Tom (the last great surviving relationship from the first film) would have moved the focus to the chemistry of these two greats alongside Diane Keaton. Having an actress of the quality of Winona Ryder instead of Sophia would also have helped, of course, but the emphasis on her character was still something that drew attention away from the themes and characters that made the first two films so good.
This is great. Totally agree that Duvall's absence was much more significant than Winona Ryder being contractually obligated elsewhere.
Didn't she run off to be with Johnny Depp? She got the other movie part after. In the end, Winona Ryder wasn't in a good place mentally at that time.
In my mind, the Godfather story ends with the perfect ending of part 2. There is no part 3.

Robert Duval had me since all those years ago, when he played Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird. What a powerful actor. If he were cast in Godfather III with a focus on the conflicting alpha personalities of Michael and Tom, he would have chewed up the scenery.
I think it's not just about the money, it's about RESPECT, or rather lack of, Robert Duvall felt from Paramount.

That highlights one of the big problems of the film: It was a nostalgia romp. They brought back so many actors from the other movies for cameos. The heart just wasn't in the writing. The movie, "Rocky Balboa" was the exact same way.

Tom Hagen is one of my favourite characters in the three movies and as you say you notice him not being there. Unlike the past 2 movies characters where killed or did not appear in the second movie like the actor that played Clemensa (excuse spelling)was killed off between movies because the actor wanted more money (sounds familiar) so Coppalla didn't use him and replaced him with another character and it worked. This time though with an actor like Robert Duval who is in both movies. Your going to think "where is Robert Duval? why is that tv actor George Hamilton in his place as another character? I just saw him (Hamilton) on Colombo as a TV presenter who kills a guy who is blackmailing him for being in a porno movie and maybe thats why they called him BJ. Honestly they filmed both that episode of Colombo and God Father 3 around the same time. I know Hamilton has done movies but he is always just a TV actor for me.
The “your mistress” Michael referenced in Godfather II was Sonny’s widow. That definitely contributed to the tension between the two and would’ve been fun in the third installment.

Not only because of Duvall's incredible acting abilities, but also, his part as the Corleone Consigliary was so important to Godfather III being as successful as the first two. Jesus god,, the most incredible leap of logistic movie making,, imagine seeing that in the cinema and not knowing it was coming ,, and if , imagine, you were obsessed with Somny and James Caans performance from Pt1.. you , or whoever that person was , would have been blown clean way out sideways beyond any cinemagoer in history at that point. It seems simple now, but I love to crystalize it how it must have been. Incredible innovation.

I’m watching a remastered version of Godfather 3. CODA The Death of Michael Corleone. Coppola when in and recut it. Changed beginning and ending. I’m only 30 minutes in, but already much better. The other seemed disjointed. It’s on Paramount+

It made perfect sense for Michael Corleone not to have Tom Hagan even if he had not ‘died’. Michael Corleone was cleaning house to become respectable so wouldn’t want a lawyer linked to his violent past. So a slick new lawyer played by George Hamilton was more appropriate to negotiate with the Vatican Bank . So the financial wrangle that had Duvall dropped worked to the film’s benefit.
thats a great argument , but i think they would have used a slik new lawyer for the negotiations , but behind the scenes the likes of a tom hagen advising would have been likely.
If the time was taken to develop the plot better, with Duvall and Winona Ryder in the film AND I heard Gene Hackman had a role offered, then, this could have been an EPIC film....

Did you notice Clemenza puts sugar in the sauce as it’s cooking on the stove? I remember my Italian grandmother used to also do that; the Sicilians did that to take the bitterness out of the pasta sauce.

Of course being Italian, I'm an expert in preparing it and until my dear mother was alive, it was a big tradition in my family cooking it during 1 or 2 days time, usually in September when "S. Marzano tomatoes" are at their best.
In the last years we made it, I helped a lot my mother in this quite long procedure, she had also a good storing space living in the country.
Usually on Saturday morning we went to the open market, where a direct deal with farmers was possible, we bought about 150 kg of San Marzano's tomatoes and all the other stuff as basilico, garlic and onions (with a precise ratio) and then we started the preparation that consists of about 4 or 5 phases during the next two days.
In this way we prepared an amount of wonderful pommarola (about 120-130 jars) enough for about 4 families: mine, my mother, my brother and my aunt ones.
This sauce can stay in the void controlled jars for months and years (usually it lasted until the next summer ^_^) and is superb with pasta: you open the jar (once opened it lasts about 4 or 5 days in the fridge), put 3 or 4 spoons of sauce in the pot with the just cooked spaghetti (or other types), add oil and butter, heat and turn them for 1 minute and the perfection is reached finally adding Parmigiano on them! 😉😁

I helped her as well at Thanksgiving get togethers and Christmas because she had bad arthritis and couldn’t stir stuff like she used to. She loved playing rummy and other card games with my brother and me when we were together. She made the same sugar cookies for years, but we had to stir up the dough because she couldn’t do it anymore. Thanks mom! We’ll be able to keep several of our favorites she used to make as well!

It seems that Coppola could have fought the studio to make sure Duval appeared in the film if he really wanted him much like he did with Brando.
To hear Coppola sounds as if he had very little control over the film. Films he produced and directed in the past he had a great deal of control over. Paramount had been begging him For years to do Godfather 3. Hard to believe he had that little control over the picture.
The difference is wanted to make Godfather part I, but he didn't want to make part III.
I believe another big reason as to why it seems Coppola had so little control over Part III compared to the first Godfather films he did is I believe he was trying to get another film or other films made but couldn't get financing for them for some reason or another so the studio basically made him an offer ( that he couldn't refuse, lol) that if he agreed to do Part III, he would get financing for those other projects. I'm not sure what those said projects were but I do know that not long after Part III he did an excellent version of Dracula, so perhaps that was one of them?

Until today, I remember the first time I watched the third movie. I was surprised that Tom Hagen was gone. Barely mentioned. I wish they had paid Duvall the money he wanted. The 3rd movie was eh-ok, I suppose but never be on the same level as the first two. Such a shame.

I wish people would stop hating on Sophia! She wasn't all that bad. What should be the focus WAS the missing Tom Hagen. I was very disappointed with his absence. I'm a film watching veteran since I was 5 years old. The film part 3 wasn't very good, but it wasn't bad either. Remember the first two were made in the 70's so the quality was much better.
It’s not hating, you just feel sorry for the poor girl. The acting is excruciating, and it’s now there for the ages. No matter how many Lost In Translations she makes, the biography will always be bookended by the Godfather fiasco. Personally, I always watch G3 in French-the voice acting almost makes up for the silliness. Coppola the director always indulged in nepotism; sooner or later it was bound to come back and bite him on the ass.

Yes, number 3 should have pitted Tom, against Michael, possibly over their offspring. A confrontation was hinted at in GF 2. And only Tom had the brains and balls to win that. He was the more interesting character in the series.

Family is such a central theme of the Godfather films and Tom Hagen was one of the few remaining original family members. Hagen was a great character played by a great actor. His presence would have hugely deepened and legitimized the third film with all kinds of story points and character moments. Duval was crucial. Rather than insult him, they should have paid Duvall what he was worth.
Sofia Coppola did an excellent job. She had a fresh innocence which actually added to the film's effectiveness. Part 3 may not be quite as good as its predecessors but it is still a damn good film.

These details are amazing! Paying Keaton 50% more than Duvall was an insane insult. Duvall is a superior actor (even if he underplays) and Hagen's absence was a massive hole in the story. It was one of the main reasons 3 stumbled and Paramount and Coppola have been paperingr it over ever since. The cash-grab new version just brought more the issue back again.
You underestimate Keaton’s acting. She is understated in the role of Kay, and a necessary antidote to Pacino’s awkwardness with women. Superior is relative.
@@jcoltrane8976 Of course my opinion is totally subjective - career-wise I always saw Duvall's understated style to be more compelling and believable (more in the style of a character actor than a robust leading man). Obviously the studio decided to pay Keaton more due to her greater "marquee value", but I can see why Duvall wasn't interested in taking a considerably lesser fee. What we'll never know is how much better 3 might have been if Hagen's calm presence had been beside Michael.

Michael Corleone never liked Tom Hagen, during the reception for Connie and Carlo's wedding he told Kay; "He (Tom) is a good lawyer, not an Italian but a good man" later after the assassination attempt at the estate, Micheal told Tom what he always wanted to hear. "I have always respected you... your my brother" and this was said to get him to do what he wanted him to do. Michael then yells at him after returning from Cuba..."Why can't you give me a straight answer anymore!" When talking about killing Hyman Roth, Michael dressed him down in front of the capo's of Al Neri and Rocko Lampone by saying; "I thought you where going to tell me your taking the vice presidency of the house of hotels in Reno, I thought you where going to tell me that." Meaning, Michael wanted him to go and probably set the offer up so he would leave. When Tom reacted that he doesn't have to tell Michael about "All the jobs he has turned down" which means Michael has done this before. If Tom doesn't want to play ball he can take his wife, family.... and his mistress and move to Reno.

not having duvall in it
Having sofia coppola in it (it was supposed to be winona ryder)
Having andy garcia's vincent estranged from Michael at the beginning like michael barely knows his existence they should of made them have more of a relationship together it would of made it more believable for michael to be grooming him to become the next godfather
