This is the configuration that sparks the terminology war between 180º-V and Boxer and Flat. It's definitely not a Boxer because opposing sets of pistons have to move in opposite directions on independent crank journals to be a Boxer, as its predecessor, the 512 Berlinetta Boxer was misnamed. This engine has opposing con rods on the same journal on the crank, hence the 180º V name. But people don't like calling a wide open V a V. I don't mind calling a 180º V a Flat engine though.

Having driven one for over 1,000 miles, I can honestly say it was, and IS one of the most comfortable cars to drive long-distance. I drove one from Pennsylvania to South Carolina, and loved every mile. The seats are very comfortable and broad, the cabin is spacious, the clutch was good, gearing was easy....everything was comfortable and the car was fast-enough to really have FUN with it. The visibility was terrific, the A/C worked well....if I had the money, I'd have TWO of them.

Comparing this car (from 1988) to today's performance is really ignorant. Ever heard of progress? Technology advances. Discoveries are made. You have to appreciate the car from the time it was in being built with the techniques that were known. Like the Mona Lisa. In today's world, using photoshop, you could "hand paint" the same thing digitally, but it wouldn't be "better". Because cars are just utility to most people in the world, it's easy to overlook the art form of engineering and passion that the Ferraris of old (and today) exhibit.

Heck, even my 2016 Audi S4 has a true 350-360bhp (333bhp advertised) and my 4.4 sec 0-60 will walk all over the TR's 5.5sec. But it doesn't sound or look as good obviously.

Yes far more boring is what has happened since the 80:s! Nothing today feel or look as cool as this car. Cant see how one would need more performance than this car for the road, modern cars brag with stupid 1000+ hp and all the modern gizmos. Nah modern safety and reliability is a plus but to me thats about it compared to a Testarossa, Lotus Esprit Turbo or similar.

This car sat In Knopf Porsche/Mercedes/Ferrari showroom on Lehigh Street in Allentown for Decades. Still wore the Moterweek license plate. Literally from 1988-2016. It was owned by Garry Knopf the dealership owner. Rumor has it Ferrari offered the car to his dealership to sell after the testing. It was driven occasionally. I would always admire it while waiting for my Porsche 951 oil change. I remember it had like 1600 miles in the early 2000s.
On another note, there was also a Porsche 959 sitting next to this car in the showroom. Two iconic 80s super cars. That car was also owned by Mr Knopf.

Man, 380hp probably felt like a ton back then. You could have picked up one of these 5 years ago for $40,000 to $50,000. They're pushing $250,000 now. It's amazing how far they've come. The 6.3 V12 in the F12 is pushing 730hp so pretty much double. Inflation adjusted the Testarossa would run $250,000 so a fair amount less than the F12 ($350,000)

The Testarossa and the Countach were IT in the 80s. And then came the F40 and 959 that took it to another level. There was something so much more special about exotics back then. When you saw one, it was an awe-inspiring event, even in Southern California. Now, one simply goes to cars and coffee to check out the latest and greatest. Exotics are still awesome and incredible machines,, but for me their mystique has died.

LocDawgd A few things: Comparing a Buick GNX to a Ferrari Testarossa is like comparing McDonald's to a quality steak house. Both are technically serving meat and will fill you up but that's pretty much where the similarities end. Comparing only a 0-60 time is fine if that's all that turns you on but there's way more to a car than just that figure. Also, speaking of prices, check and see what a GNX is going for today compared to a Testarossa. Not much of a difference any more and you'll find more Testarossa's available today as well.
