I just found out a UA-cam vlogger dog was suddenly put to sleep due to this problem...God bless all the people here trying to find solutions and answers for their beloved dogs....they are family they are worth the fight.
My dog, now 17, black lab, had one of these and lost control of the right side of her body and bowels for about three months. She came back to about 85-90%, though her front right paw would often curl when she would stand or eat. She's had a good life, but this past week has been hard. It's quite evident that her right side has atrophied somewhat in combination to some natural muscle loss all over, which I'm assuming is due to aging. She reacts instinctively (almost over the top really) to people touching her feet. Rehab consisted of gently pulling on her foot. At about 8 weeks she started pulling back, in the slightest of ways. This was, to me, a huge breakthrough and by 12 weeks she was regaining function of her body and walking. This was 8 years ago... my dear old friend hangs on and never leaves my side.
I have a question this is happening with our dog now did you ever use a brace for their leg or did therapy just help because it gets stronger on its own
My 6.5 yo Chocolate Lab just had one of these last Monday, affecting her R rear leg. Emergency room Dr said it was probably a muscle tear away from the Achillies tendon. Took her to a Surgical Orthopedic and they diagnosed FCE. Now, since it's not an emergency, I can't get in for an MRI or rehab therapy for at least 3 weeks. I started my own massages and PT. She's made a remarkable recovery so far and can, as of today, get up and down stairs by herself. I already let her play (a little) rough with our Leonberger and I toss the ball gently (so she doesn't run too fast yet). At this point, other than the orthopedic Dr., the vets are a waste of time, and by the time I can get her professional help, it'll be more wasted of time. My biggest fear is to go to fast or do something wrong that will actually physically injure her leg, like tearing tendons, etc.
My dog is going through something like this right now from a neck injury. My boy been down since Monday and his front too legs are limp.🥺 Took him to see 2 vets but the cost of a MRI is like $5000. He’s getting better a little each day that pass. I’m highly stressed at this point.
@@Tronchain thank you for telling me I am so so glad he is okay now 💗💗💗!!! Ours has either the stroke blot clot or a tumor we are seeing right now but they gave medicine a steroid and blot clot thinner so hopefully it will work they said in the next few days 😭😭😭, your pet gives us hope
@@Tronchain I’m so glad he is doing okay now !!! 💗💗 that is so scary , what therapy did you use , ours just had a stroke we think he is doing a little better but still we went to help him further than medicine , it’s been 5 days
My dog is 14 years old and has similar symptoms. We were advised to get an MRI scan. If surgery is necessary, we are hesitant due to our dog’s age, and we were told that medication treatment might be needed. Do you think medication treatment would be effective?
I hope your dog has achieved a recovery. I thought I’d share where I went when it was my beloved pet. He ha something neurological going on in his brain. He had seizures and nystagmus in his eyes. The vet offered an MRI, but there was no treatment regardless of result. Or the treatment would be so hard on him that my beloved pet would suffer. I let him go at that time. I am not sure I will ever stop grieving him at some level, but an important question to answer when these high dollar diagnostics are offered is really, what difference will it make.
My dog is showing signs of fce. She was walking just fine two weeks ago and last week when we came back from a trip she started declining on one side and now both back legs still have strength to stand but the feet just aren’t getting the signal. Vet is sending us to imaging next week.

My dogs mother bit off the end of her tail thinking it was the cord that she had to cut but now the dog is having pain in her tail that seems to go up into her lower back and she keeps biting at it and spinning around in circles chasing her tail is there anyway to take care of the nerve pain or phantom pain that she’s getting any type of massage that I can do or passive motion?
Good question. There is no evidence to suggest that steroids or anti-inflammatory drugs decrease additional damage. We don't see any difference in the time to recovery nor the completeness of recovery in dogs that get anti-inflammatories versus those that don't.
Thanks so much for the response. Have you seen any cases where dogs have recovered from incontinence due to a spinal stroke affecting the following areas? My dog has starting walking again within 2 days of the FCE. However, still no sensation to the tail (limp) and incontinence. “From mid L4 to mid L5, there is a moderate intramedullary T2 hyperintense signal primarily centered over the gray matter. On sagittal myelocontrast images, a partial attenuation of the dorsal subarachnoid space is noted between L4-L5 and mid L6.”
Tough for us to know for sure. But FCE is usually not painful after the first day or so. Two months would be quite atypical. Was an MRI performed or was the diagnosis based on symptoms/exam/X-rays?
@@SEVNeurology based on exams in symptoms because I could not afford an MRI all they did was x-rays in the x-rays turned out fine so I guess they are assuming it is fce
