Nickel Creek - When In Rome

- Where can a sick man go?
When he can't choke down the medicine
The old Doc knows.
A specialist came to town, but he stays at home
Saying no one knows, so I don't, Honey, when in Rome.
Where can a teacher go?
Wherever she thinks people need the things she knows.
Hey, those books you gave us look good on the shelves at home
And they'll burn warm in the fireplace, Teacher, when in Rome.
Grab a blanket, sister, we'll make smoke signals.
Bring in some new blood
It feels like we're alone.
Grab a blanket, brother,
so we don't catch cold from one another
I wonder if we're stuck in Rome.
Where can a dead man go?
A question with an answer only dead men know.
But I'm gonna bet they never really feel at home,
If they spent a lifetime learning how to live in Rome.
Nickel creek should have gotten so much more recognition when they came out. Such a phenomenal trio, love them, alway,s will.
Indeed
Everything Chris Thile has been in has been so good.
And Sara 🔥 Watkins,so gorgeous
I miss Nickel Creek so much! Reunion tour pls, pls!
you got your wish
They are sooo talented. I saw them for the first time in TN recently and met Chris and Sara afterwards briefly. Great music.
I saw Nickelcreek last night in Broomfield, CO and it was the best show I have ever been to. I cannot believe how talented these people are and I am so glad they have reunited after 61/2 years. It was just amazing.
This band is so deeply underrated in my opinion
Can't agree more.
Not underated imo..you have to realize they came out over 20 years young. So today, not as well known. Also they broke off and did other projects for many years shortly after the height of their career, also many years ago. Al this and they just turned 40s (older millenials)
I saw them in concert and the whole time i was either revelling in their talent or thinking how cute Chris's dancing was! hahaha
Yeah! This is why I really enjoy listening to Chris Thiles music: It´s always a surprise, and it really broadens my musical horizon!!!
God damn!!!! I love nickel creek!!!! A truly unique band, it's a shame they disbanded
love this video
Love their music!. Thinking about going see them at Austin City Limits in August.
I noticed the fourth time watching it, and thought that was wicked awesome.
Great song i like When In Rome my grandpa played a violin
yes, and a lot of people know that somewhere in there minds, but that little peace of knowledge is hard to remember at times, thank you for so kindly reminding me, i had almost forgotten it (this is NOT sarcasm btw)
I never knew I wanted to see Chris Thile lying in a puddle energetically playing mandolin... but now I do because that was great. Lol
very nice
Just be yourself. Don't do things because everyone else is doing them. That's what I get from this song. Maybe I'm wrong. =/
@JohnDeathMetal couldn't agree more
Try Great Big Sea: they're a Canadian band that plays a similar folk music blend, although they're less bluegrassy
i never notice I leave it set to loop on my mp3 player XD
That violin/mandolin riff has been stuck in my head for unknown years, and just now I finally find this song again. Awesome!
Chris having a mandolin-induced seizure in a puddle is one of my favorite Nickel Creek moments.
Come back and make more stuff like this! Please!
Isn't that so true. Wow.
The best kind of music can't really be placed in a genre... and this is a great example of that.
"Indie-folk"
🤔🤷🏼
#lol
This song always gives me the chills. It's not just the music, but the meaning of the lyrics about how people are pressured to conform to society and it's hard to not conform.
It's about the genocide of the natives to the americas. The specialist was a name given to government agents. They passed out diseased blankets to spread germs to which the natives had no immunity to.
Seems they never stopped.
I stumbled upon this group, and this song in particular, late in my life. But what a find! This song will be on the list of my all-time favourites.
The only band i discovered through myspace and still listen to all these years later.
Oh my god. I don't think people realized how much this band knew. This song has the answers to life hidden between the lines of every verse. I'm blown away.
i remember when i played this song on repeat when it came out. still love it :)
Man, I miss these people. I so miss this group. What talent. Knocks me out. Blows me away. I come back again and again. So many great hits. So much talent. Wow. Thank you. All.
I'm in love with this song. Does anyone else have any reccomendations for more dark folk or bluegrass music?
MurzMKII cherryholmes black and white
MurzMKII nickel creek the lighthouse tale
MurzMKII Alison Krauss Jacobs dream
Alison Kraus. "Ghost in this House." Wonderful. You maybe already know it.
My Favourite Nickel Creek...💙💜💚
Oh, Christopher Scott Thile, Great god of the Mandolin, will you please marry me??
Also the expression when in Rome says alot too. BAsically when in Rome do as the Romans refers to following the crowd and not standing out as an individual and thus allowing injustices to continue. I hope this makes some sense
Still a great song. Still one of my favorite gigs.
And Sara Watkins,so gorgeous.
I was at the show of an indie band from the UK that I loved back in 2003. Two guys standing next to me were talking about bands they loved and they both mentioned Nickel Creek. I’d heard the name but instantly dismissed them because I did not care for anything that was played on CMT. But on their word I picked up This Side. I became an instant fan and still an to this day.
i wish i was as amazing at music as chris thile! he's the second greatest mandolin player that ever lived, second to only the great bill monroe, the man who invented blue grass
I have never heard this song until now....and oh WOW.....this is sooooo good !!!!
I love all Nickelcreek songs, but this one is by far my very favourite. I love the lyrics that keep you thinking and are open for so many interpretations, I love the rythm, the totally rocking violin, and I believe this is the most amazing video I´ve ever seen.
Thanks nickelcreek for making my life richer, and thanks NickelCreekAmazing for posting this here.
This was big on cmt when i was in college, hard to believe its been that long ago.
Like 24 years , i was like 20
Crazy to see Chris & Billy
this is song is amazing. and the lead singer is so cute!!!!
+laura20022004 this is an excellent song
Yeah, I definitely do not place Nickel Creek in the country genre. They're too amazing for that.
you should see him live :)
@Dragon83527 Exactly! I think a good parallel is a very talented singer or actor or athlete. They get very rich, very famous and have everything a person could ever want or need. But so many self-destruct. The more they have, the more they want. They often engage in a lifestyle of depravity and waste. Some end up dying at an early age because of it, while others, despite having everything, are miserable.
Total power often leads to total collapse!
@paroketh During the time of the Roman Empire, people would come from all over the Western world to the great city & everyone would try to appear "sophisticated" by trying to adopt the dress & other fads Rome had at the time, including a lot of immoral activities & a certain ruthlessness and inhumanity.
No one else can "rock" the acoustics like Nickel Creek!!
Their forefathers New Grass Revival could! And today’s Sam Bush Band.😊
@unobrandon Did you not ever think that perhaps they had nothing to do with the direction of the music video? ... and in any case wtf is wrong with rocking out regardless wether or not YOU think it fits the song.
why is this song not on spotify? Their "oldest" release is 2000... I'm sure it has something to do with money and rights, but dammit... it's a good song. Why can't I add it to my spotify playlist?
@unobrandon You should keep your inane observations of peoples choice of movement in music videos to yourself, such talent warrents any style of jiggery they wish to display.
@1STINITIATE indeed! however you should check out chris thile's collaboration with yo-yo ma, edgar meyer, and stuart duncan if you haven't heard the stuff already (the goat rodeo sessions). a few songs are on youtube, and the album's up on itunes for $10.99.
i haven't given the whole thing a listen yet, but there is some seriously awesome musical talent there that definitely eases the pain of no more nickel creek.
@workofhishand while I respect that you're religious, just to be clear, it isn't the belief in Christ that the world hates, it's the relentless shoving it down people's throats- it's nice to know you think that some virgin girl gave birth to the son of god, who died for everyone's sins and came back three days later, but to be honest, we don't believe it, but when we're ready to listen, we will. until then, we'll take the lessons it teaches metaphorically in stride, and let you think as you wish
the world would rather put on shelves, saying that the gospel is useless in this world.
So Christians, nourish the fire in your hearts, pray to God. Bring in the Holy Spirit. It feels like we're alone here. Christians warm up your faith, so our lukewarmness does not pull each other down. Then the world would have become our trap.
Where can a person go when he dies? Only the dead know. But one who's heart was set on following the world will not feel at home in heaven nor hell.
Look at video it shows old west, it talks about the blankets.I am native I know what Im talking about. I didnt just study this today in school, this is something Ive read up on for many years. This song is about the Genocide of the native population by use of germ warfare. To those that say we didnt know about smallpox read a book they were using germ warfare in way of sick people in middle ages.
@shady4557 I'm not 100% sure, but it cuts to an imagine of an Indian performing some sort of human sacrifice (bring some new blood) , so it may be alluding to the depravity of man and the "blankets" could be the smallpox ridden blankets that the Spanish gave them. "Stuck in Rome" could mean that they have noway to escape their destruction and depravity. Thats just my observation though.
i can't say point blank this is what they were thinking when they wrote this, but here's my interpretation. to me the song pretty spiritual. like we're all living here "doing as romans do" aka not doing right and being separate from god. so much so that maybe when we get to heaven we won't even be at home because we're so used to this.
...but i'm a bit of a Jesus-freak so I could be way off! regardless, i absolutely love this song; melody, harmony, lyrics and all :)
@hippyman963 I think it just means well it think it's talking about how poorly some people get treated and how some people don't know how to get out of bad situations and all they can do is hope that some one is out there who will listen and can help and how hopeless they feel the situation feels. That's just my opinion of it.
I dont know if anyone mentionend this before, but "when in rome" refers to an old saying that amounts to the meaning of - Take on the lifestyle of the people that live around you, in the sense of taking on the cultural habits of the larger community you are currently living in. The original say in its full is as follows "When in Rome, do as the Romans do".
Nickel Creek is GREAT but I prefer the sound of Punch Brothers. I LOOOOVE Chris Thile in general though!!!!
I read quite awhile ago that Nickel Creek was breaking up. Don't know if they went their separate ways or if they are still together. Anyone know? This was a terrific tune and they are so talented. Aren't they related - bro, sis, cousin? I can't recall at the moment.
@hippyman963 I think it just means well it think it's talking about how poorly some people get treated and how some people don't know how to get out of bad situations and all they can do is hope that some one is out there who will listen and can help
Nope, libertarian, an intriguing mix of liberal and conservative, think of it like a liberal who focuses on the way things can be done better instead of complaining about how they are being/have been done but never offers a real solution.
i have loved nickle creek for ever, but i was never impressed by their videos. however i feel this video is very impacting. i love how he plays laying down in the wing shaped puddle and when the boots stomp... its just very deep. i love it!
@QueenAlyss I didn't see your comment before posting (below) that I'd heard a loooong time ago they were breaking up. Anyone know this group's status now? What a shame. Very, very talented musicians.
Excuse me, This song is about the genocide of the native americans by the settlers. The video describes the use of biological agents to kill. They did so by giving out blankets that were infected.
My interpretation is alot like emcard1 except that I think that were not so much doing wrong but like acting this way in order to fit in the like emcard1 said we wont know what to do in heaven.
i think its kind of how we're all trying to be like each other, and the whole dead man bit is about how if there's no one to be like, how will you be? once again, just my opinion/interpretation
Not all songs need a chorus. I don't really know the answer to that though, I guess you could just say the section in between all the words is the chorus, even if it doesn't have words.
what the heck is the song about? i know i sound retarted, but really? WHERE CAN A TEACHER GO... HONEY... GET A BLANKET.... WHERE CAN A DEAD MAN GO? great song but freaking confusing lyrics
1:05 POV: you just liberated an outpost full of angry Christians and get a cutscene of cows
I know Chris' brother. In a band with him, actually.
One day, we will be this great.
@minnesotawildgurl9 they cant kick nickel back because if it wasnt for the bluegrass nickelback would have never been discoverd but i like nickel back too
absolutely love this song! i hate seeing old people sick, sad, or hurt...it makes me feel helpless and i also tear up :(
Their kind of music normally isn't quite my type... But this video definitely helped me to hear the redeeming qualities in this particular song ;)
@jlubac1a i came here to live; i did not come here to die. any life that is spent trying to survive never really is alive. that is my solitude
Doesnt matter if you were wrong or right, you heard a nice song and thought "hey, how can I inject some divisive political commentary into this"
try reading gamelesone's post up there, you'll understand the real reason is because of the saying "when in Rome, do as the Romans do"
Awesome song. These guys need to get back together... I mean now. Right now...
my comment were posted in responce to a question if you dont like my answer fine. but there is a lot more than what I said in song
Am I the only one who thinks about Gabriel García Marquez' story "A very old man with enormous wings" when I see this video?
Getting ready for that 2024 tour with Kacey Musgraves!!!
@booyahmartinn hahahahaha i pity the fool who thought it was about genocide. I have no idea how they came up with that.
For country, this has some really deep Celtic sounds. I'm sure they were going for Native American, they are very similar.
probably my all time favorite nickel creek song
@QueenAlyss Both hands up in the air jumping up and down like a kid on 5 pounds of suger. I miss them too much!!
What has the mandoline player done with his awesome hair? :O
Long hair fits him better.
Nice song though XD
cool song, I'm really hardcore and gabber fan but this song is great
best regards from vienna / austria
I'm aware, it still has that celtic feel because of the drums and the mandolin. Kind of an Irish taste.
Kings...of Leon... are in NO WAY related to the undoubtable beauty that is Nickel Creek... Just...NO.
Funny when Nickel Creek has a concert they look like this on stage:
o I o
Sara, Chris and Sean
Pretty cool how those two puddles of water at his shoulders resemble the wings of the old man.
@QueenAlyss i do. i don't really like their solo projects. : /
i like how at 0:15 hes lying on the ground and the water-filled potholes look like wings
We're singing this in our band. You so rock! Adrian and Julian (twins who sang to you backstage.....)
One of my many favorite groups
Nice song and nice video. The Indian is a man, not a woman, his name is Rick Mora.
@nagzul yea but i just hate that harmony there, the one later is awesome though
Pretty good song... Not sure why there is so much spam in the comments though
whats the name of the guitar played at the start? its for my music hoemwork!
This is still one of the most important songs written in the last decades. Thank you.
i wonder if he hurt his head when he was rockin his part on da ground??? beast anyways!
Hahaha! Only six dislikes to 540 likes! Nickel Creek was and is amazing...
They definetly did! But I´d agree it´s very different to their other songs.
