Top 7 crude steel producing states in India in 2022
India is the second largest crude steel producing country in the world after China. The country’s total crude steel output in the past calendar year 2022 was recorded at 125 mnt which was higher by 6% compared to 118 mnt in 2021.
In this vlog, we will see which were the largest crude steel producing states in India in 2022.
Odisha topped the list, like always, with 24 mnt of crude steel produced in the past year. This was because the state is most richly endowed with iron ore which is why most steel plants are located in Odisha.
The state contributed to around 19% of the country’s crude steel production.
Next in the list is Jharkhand. The eastern state produced 18 mnt of crude steel in 2022, Following this was Chhattisgarh at third position with 15.5 mnt.
Karnataka was the fourth largest crude steel producing state at 14 mnt. Maharashtra was at fifth position with 12 mnt, Gujarat at sixth with 10 mnt and West Bengal at seventh with 9 mnt in 2022.
These seven states together contributed 81% out of total production. Others contributed the balance 19%.
Talking about capacity, India’s crude steel production capacity is 162-165 mnt/year, of which 45% is through blast furnace-route and the remaining 55% is through induction furnace- and electric arc furnace routes.
Of the total capacity, 50% is in the eastern India due to an abundance of raw materials.
Furthermore, with more capacity expansion plans in pipeline, India is emerging as the fastest growing country. Interestingly, among the expansions lined up globally, majority are coming up in India in the next few years.
