For those who don't know Spanish, at about 17:00, he dedicates the "Variaciones sobre una cancion de Cuna bretona" to the memory of his late wife, Montserrat Figueras, who died in 2011. They had been married since 1968, and she can be seen in many of their earlier works.

Listening to his/their music was such a pleasure back in 1998-2001 when I was living in a medieval- XVI building in Tours, France.
Jordi Savall is still a hero of mine, in 2021 ✨🧡

When Maestro Savall plays alone only then it became painfully obvious - his exemplary mastery of an instrument and deepest affection for the music. Passion and poetry, emotion and musicality - all came alive at once in his performance. He is a singularly talented musician and just as an extraordinary person. His renditions of every piece he choose to play are so affecting that somehow one feels that it is exactly what one wants to hear. Though each piece is of a virtuoso grade, yet each one feels so organic and natural, refined and elegantly an emotional quicksilver. Pure magic... Thank you, Maestro.

I simultaneously fell in love with the sound of viola da gamba and the artistry of Jordi Savall after seeing the film“Tous les Matins du Monde” (All the Mornings in the World”). It was a life changing experience. I’m a professional cellist who has been inspired by Mr. Savall to learn how to play the gamba.. He makes it looks so easy, but while comparing cellos to gambas is not quite like apples to oranges, there are enough differences to keep someone “crossing over” on their toes-especially with the bow. I’ve been privileged to meet Mr. Savall, and he is the most humble, genial person you could ever meet.

I too had the same experience when I saw "Tous les Matins du Monde" !! I was just knocked out by the viola da gamba (plus I love a good period piece film), and I discovered Jordi Savall at that time. Kudos to you for learning to play the gamba! I'm not a musician, just a music lover. So nice that there a number of YTube vids of Jordi Savall et. when playing beautiful early music. Lovely to know that Savall is such a nice person.

Have loved the viola de gamba since I saw the wonderful film "Tous Les Matins du Monde" many years ago. Jordi produced the music and of course played the gamba on this most magical of films. The music most associated with the Gamba, especially by the composers Marin Marais and Monsieur de Saint Colombe is so ethereal and speaks to something so deep within us that it seems to encompass the world of human emotions like no other music.

    Jordi Savall i Bernadet,

I was always fascinated by how people choose their occupations.
Some pick chiesel and hammer, some keyboard of the computer, some plough the earth, some choose pen or pencil.
People attached to their chosen instruments all day, week, month and years.
People use their instruments to create physical reality around us.
But those who pick the musical instrument are of the higher order.
They don't create any physical objects.
They create us. They make us better people.
How do you make others stop and listen? How do you read the score and learn technique?
    But most of all:
How do you convey an emotion?

Imagine being that hemorrhoid at 10:42 and 10:52 he coughed outside his sleeve. 2:14 was for good luck I suppose. I've never heard a master so clear, so perfectly complete. Ruined by some dingle berry afterthought you brush into the toilet out of shame. I am the proletariat, the unforgiving wraith. Seriously though his coughs were as jarring as the overused Wilhelm scream

I've heard Variaciones Sobre Una Cancion de Cuna Bretona before, but not sure where. It's not quite Visa från Rättvik (Jan Johansson), or other songs of his I've checked, though many of those folk melodies are similar in feeling. It's certainly in an album I've listened to regularly, though...

Can anyone explain the small box near his right foot? Wonder if that’s a tuner or metronome or something, not that he would need them.
Anyway thanks for the video, Jordi is one of the few I can listen to every day.

7:30 oh I've performed this piece before! A shame I've only found this recording now because it would've been encouraging at the time :D This music is beautiful. I was taught viol by a former student of Savall; I only wish my technique had been good enough to get to this level! Unfortunately had to give the instrument up last year but hoping to get back into it next year. Seeing this mastery is so encouraging :D
