  • In the past y'all have told me that if I have questions or need help with something to ask, so that's what I'm gonna do. I need some help looking for a mini-split for a large room. Everything I've seen seems to be based off square footage to calculate the btu size, but this room has a huge vaulted ceiling. Anyone ever put a mini split in a large room like this?

Go big lol! At least a 24k and I think it will work well. My buddy is using the 24k for his entire house so this room should be fine! The eg4 24k is for up to 1350 sq ft and even with that height you won't be over that.

I have installed 10 mini splits, so far in the last few years. If I had that room, I would install two 12,000 btu units basically at two end points. I had very good luck with Senville mini splits, having them at two different locations would cool and heat the room better!

I'm cooling a room 24x32 with the EG4 AC/DC 12000 BTU mini split. Do not have as high a ceiling as you do, but like the guy says, cold air sinks. This little unit is knocking it out of the park as far as cooling goes. 95- 110 out , 68 inside. Can not describe how happy I am with this unit. Off grid with a little 12v system. Looks to me I would mount the indoor unit right above your TV, shooting COLD air into middle of the whole room.

I'm using the EG4 12000 BTU hybrid mini split on a room exactly half of what you have, high ceilings and all and it does a great job. So I'd go 24000 BTU for that room. I'm in the USVI, concrete walls and no insulation anywhere.

I'll add another successful EG4 ac/dc story. My traditional carrier 3 ton Central Florida 3000 square-foot home is now far less toasty due to the combination of a 24k and 12k effectively chilling my (within envelope) close cell spray foam attic 24/7 to ~65f, effectively chilling my home from above through the drywall. My ceiling temperatures are typically a 5 to 7° delta to the floor temperature which creates a convection effect with cool air falling and warm rising. Friends will come over and be mystified why super cool air is moving around them with no ceiling fans and very low static pressure central ventilation.

Hi. Ive just installed a Mitsubishi electric heat pump in a room almost the same size. I chose a floor mounted model as we use it for heating as well as cooling. It's got a cooling capacity of 4.5 kW and heating capacity of 5.4 kW and so far have been delighted with it. It's unbelievable how little energy it takes. I really like the floor mounted option even for cooling as it cools down the room from the floor upwards. It's whisper quiet too. It runs perfectly from my multi plus 3000. They are not the cheapest option but well worth it, I think.

Hi been watching your channel lately. I been running 2 24k btu minisplits with a eg4 6000xp inverter, the temperature in the summer are between 100° and 110°. In order to calculate what size minisplit you have to take into account where you are located, but a 24k btu minisplit should be able to cool your room. Just make sure that if you buy a traditional minisplit that it is an Inverter time minisplit.

Two 9K’s - 30.5 SEER Gree Sapphire would be plenty. Mount them opposite each, but diagonally so that you get a CW air circulation (promotes clear weather, blue skies under high pressure). 250-750W each in cool mode. Double that for heat mode.

I'm going to provide a controversial opinion here. Don't use a mini split. Use two!
Also don't worry about sizing. A 24k unit would be more than enough. But instead of using 1 24k unit. Use two 12k units.
Mini splits have a great turn down ratio but much of the time one unit will be enough. So most of the year you can run 1 unit but the second one can kick in if it gets really hot or really cold.
Also, you have redundancy. If one goes out you still have one working and it's cheaper to replace a 12k than it is to replace a 24k
Finally you could even put the heads on opposite sides of the room for more even distribution.
You can get two 12k monitors for less than $1400.
Do not mount on the wall. They have an audible vibration.

I you said nothing about insulation, which is a factor. A unit too big will cool off quickly and not wring out moisture, resulting in high humidity. I installed a 12K EG4 solar hybrid heat pump which works good but thermostat overshoots. The Airspool solar hybrid mini split is Energy Star so qualifies for the 30% tax credit. The solar aspect adds some fun. My suggestion is 12k Airspool with solar panels, mount the inside unit above the TV. SanTan Solar as a vendor. You can run this unit in solar only mode if you want to play with energy cost. My Victron charge control works great now, thanks for your help.

    • @AdamDeLay07
      @AdamDeLay07  26 днів тому

If the insulation in that room is anything like the rest of the house, it's probably poorly done with lots of air gaps.
Thanks for the tips on the different units! I'm still trying to decide if I want to have a dedicated DC system for the mini-split or just use the power from my main solar system. It'll probably be a whole lot easier to just use the AC power from the solar system so I don't have to figure out panels close to the mini-split unit outside.
Glad the Victron CC is working well for you! Those things are beasts!

Your in Michigan but I don't know how far north. 22'x22' 484 sq feet. Rule of thumb is 1 ton 12000 btu's per 400 square feet.
The best way is to run a manual j heat load calculation. Don't oversize the unit. If you want good heating you'll need to mount a unit closer to the floor level since heated air wants to rise.

I did the mr kool,24k DIY 4 years ago and still works great. 750 sqfoot with valted ceiling. No problems with 30 degrees offset. 100 outside 70 inside. The blower started making a little noise but not enough to take time to replace. Getting replacement parts was a little tricky but found a solid supplier. Over the years there 24k design has changes so do your homework. Runs 100% on my solar 1800 watts to start the cool down. When the target temp and room temp are within 2 degrees the unit only draws 900 watts at active cooling. Midea U shaped is my preferred for window unit super quiet they make 8,10 and 12K. 8k are in stock but 12K are 2 month lead time. 12K will get you 500sq feet. Midea thermostats goes down to 60 d where most others are 64 d. I have a 8K for a small bedroom 250sq feet works great I also use the midea 12K in the same room as the mr kool 24K mini split as a backup or when I want to drop the temperature from 90 to 70 in less than an hour and run both.
