About Location:
The Gunung Padang site is a prehistoric site of Megalithic cultural heritage in West Java. Precisely located on the border of Gunung Padang and Panggulan Hamlets, Karyamukti Village, Campaka District, Cianjur Regency. The location can be reached 20 kilometers from the intersection of the town of Warungkondang sub-district, on the road between the City of Cianjur Regency and Sukabumi. The area of the main complex is approximately 900 m², located at an altitude of 885 m above sea level, and the area of this site is about 3 ha, making it the largest punden terraced complex in Southeast Asia.
The first report on the existence of this site was published in Rapporten van de Oudheidkundige Dienst (ROD, "Buletin of Antiquities") in 1914. The Dutch historian N. J. Krom also mentioned it in 1949. After being "forgotten", in 1979 three local residents, Endi, Soma, and Abidin, reported to Edi, the Cultural Inspector of Campaka Sub-district, about the existence of piles of large square stones of various sizes arranged in a terraced place that leads to Mount Gede. Furthermore, together with the Head of the Cultural Section of the Department of Cultural Education, Cianjur Regency, R. Adang Suwanda, he conducted a check. The follow-up was an archaeological, historical, and geological study conducted by the Arkenas Research Center in 1979 on this site.
The location of the site is steep hilly and difficult to reach. The complex is elongated, covering the surface of a hill which is lined by a large square of andesite stone. The site is surrounded by very deep valleys. This place has previously been sacred by local residents. Residents regard it as the place where Prabu Siliwangi, the king of Sunda, tried to build a palace overnight.
The function of the Gunung Padang site is estimated to be a place of worship for the people who lived there around 2000 BC. The results of Rolan Mauludy and Hokky Situngkir research indicate the possibility of involving music from several existing megaliths. Besides Mount Padang, there are several other sites in Cianjur which are relics of the megalithic/Stone Age period.
