It is one of these tragedies in Weberns life that this old fashioned and post romantic piece written when he was young is one of his most popular orchestral compositions, not unlike his Passacaglia op.1. The later compositions written by using 12-tone techniques are only for some enthusiasts, almost no-one tries to perform these, apart from some recordings conducted by Pierre Boulez nearly forty years ago. And I suppose this is the music he longed for all his life!
I don't know if that is "tragic", but yes, this piece, (which Webern would not honor with publication) is played more often than most of the pieces he made history with. But the premiere was actually done years after his death. There is this thing in which conductors play this uncharacteristic piece because of the name and the fact that it of course goes down easily with audiences. But they won't play Delius, who is better at this sort of thing!
