Good review! I was looking at this pack in store today -- trying to decide between this and the kestrel 38.
Coincidentally I'm also doing the Camino next year so going to subscribe!
@@BackcountryPilgrim My plan, thus far, is to take the French route sometime in mid to late March.
I think Osprey say the Kestrel is designed for all weather, weighs a little less than the stratos, and doesn't have the same trampoline system - but thus far I've only tried on the 48 which seems a little big.
I also plan to be doing some camping, so any pack will need to hold a lightweight bivvy or solo hiking tent (under 1kg) -- as such I think 36 litres will be my absolute limit.

62 yrs old. My lower back has been toast for many years. 779 Km on the Camino with that exact pack with no problems BUT I was super light at 5Kg plus pack plus water

I bought this pack yesterday waiting for it to come in I am in my 60”s and me and my wife are retired and we want to enjoy our life’s doing hiking in different areas plus camping thanks for giving a good review I learn a little more about the Pack I got the one with gator green.

Excellent review! Thank you for posting this. I once learned that zippers should go completely to one side or the other to avoid it sliding gradually open from movement and pressure from the contents. I often see people with center placed zippers coming open and they aren't aware. I've never seen that with side/end placed zippers. Also, if you always choose one side you can always find the zipper easily in the dark. Is center placed something you prefer? Perhaps there is a good reason that I'm not aware of. Thank you again for a great review.
Side seems more secure but center may be a bit faster to open but also less water resistant... Honestly I've never had an issue or thought about it that much. Now I may stick to side! Thanks!
When you purposely overload the pack, use bags of sand. Easy to dump them out anywhere. I just bought this pack for my 2021 Camino.
Good call! Unfortunately I didn't have any around. :)
However, I just realized I might have been unclear in this video. I "overloaded" the pack in the sense that I put more weight in it than the gear I needed for that trip. It was well within the pack's carrying capacity though and about what I expected for my Camino.
For me, the Atmos's extra 4 liters and suspension was worth the extra ounces. Glad the Stratos worked out for you though!
Great videos Doug. Have you been able to retry the Stratos 36. I purchased one earlier this summer and used it on roughly 400 miles of trails in the White Mountains of NH, with no issues at all, carrying 20 - 25 pounds. I'm planning on it being my pack of choice in a couple years when I walk the Camino Frances. I loved it so much, I purchased a second one as backup, just in case Osprey ever discontinues it.
@@BackcountryPilgrim The ATMOS antigravity system is pretty much the top of the line for Osprey. Maybe I missed it, but what months 2020 are you going and will you be posting from the trail?
I have this backpack for about 1 year. Yes a very good backpack. Then i bought a Lowe Alpine backpack and realized that it is more comfortable than my Stratos 36. Now i have my Stratos only for the beach and my Lowe Alpine for my hiking backpack!! Nice review!!

It was a Contour IV I think. Interior hydrolyzed after too many summers in the south and I had to retire it. :)
Nice review . I own the 34 and the 36l a little trick is you can mount the hydration bladder right behind the air speed harness it frees up the main compartment . Just string the hydration hanger through the hose hole a attach a small carabineer. I was able to fit a 3l osprey bladder in a insalation sleeve in my 34 liter just right behind the harness. i use it on 10 mile mountain bike ride it works awsome my favorite pack. Ironically on the instruction manual on ospreys website it shows thats how your suppose to do it. After contacing osprey apparently theres 2 versions of the 34 and 36 ones a updated model but they can both use the hydration bladder in 2 locations. Theres slight cosmetic changes in the older and updated model.
Cool hack! Yeah I've stored stuff behind the mesh before, uses that space when you dont care as much about airflow. Nice!
Jason where are those Osprey instructions you are talking about? Can you post a link? Please. I own the Stratos 34 s/m and was wondering about the Stratos 36 cause the top lid could be of use. What's your opinion since you own both? Thanks

In none of all the reviews someone noticed the possibility to make the big compartment bigger 😄. Good hidden feature
The removable dividers were a feature that used to be more popular I think. Personally I don't find them useful, but this is a good compromise. Plus dual access to the body is nice. :)

Still considering but probably the Zerk 40!
It looks good but I prefer a pack running closer down my back . I understand the air flow reason but isn't it a bit unstable with the gap if fully laden if you have to do a bit scrambling .
I dont notice a problem but "less" stable sure. Its more of a Cruiser than a climber.

A bar bells plate is a very unusual weight to carry in a pack, could have something to to with your issue
LOL well yeah there is that. :) It actually wasn't heavier than a decent food bag but it *probably* did not ride as well. 😂 I did make sure it was packed in the middle though, and the floating suspension insured that it was not riding against me.
This is the most comfortable backpack I have ever had. I really can't figure out how you got lower back pain, since it is really unbelievable.
Well there's a reason they make different packs!
@@BackcountryPilgrim Sorry to say but it's impossible to understand what you mean and the video is totally unclear: was it a comfortable backpack for you or not? I think you should remake the video from scratch and explain the main features and your opinion. In fact the video generates lots of confusion toward the end.
It is a very good pack that I found uncomfortable with the weight I carried. There are objective and subjective features of any pack and I reported on both. Sorry if that confused you.
Just bought the Stratos 36 on which appears to be the v2 - the back height adjustment is slightly different and has plastic clips to raise/lower the frame. Also FYI the website/packing list link is broken and ends up on a loop. The review policy on the website link is also broken

Did the Osprey replaced the Stratos 50 by the Stratos 44 variant? Because on their offical website the 50L variant does not exist anymore.
Looks like it. They probably figured the Atmos 50 didn't need competition. :)
Are u still getting back pain from this pack? Which other pack would you suggest in this size range ?
No because I returned it haha. Lots of people love this pack and I am an Osprey fan so it was probably just a personal fit issue. If it interests you I'd definitely try it out.
I've mostly been rocking non traditional packs since then. The Zerk 40 and Waymark Mile are both great but you need low weight loadouts. The Montane Trailblazer is my favorite trad pack right now. Also check out the Gregory Optic, that one was great!
I need to repair this backpack for one of my repair shop customers, and I can't find an easy way how to remove frame out. I need to replace back net, because the old one is in very bad condition. If someone could suggest how to remove the frame without breaking all backpack - please help.
Osprey has a lifetime warranty - maybe you could send it in?

Not really. I had it sized at REI and basically I just need a pack that doesn't put pressure on the lower back. The Atmos was perfect. :)

Nooooope. Covid killed 2020 and I have no desire to go if its going to be masked social distance blah blah blah. Plus the constant fear of being canceled on Camino. So, we'll see. 2023 is a maybe! Ultreia!
Are these models can be use by women? Like the stratos 34?
It all depends on fit. The women's model is called the Sirrus. :)
First you say that this backpack probably broke your lower back. And that this is a great backpack. Very confusing...
Fit is a very personal thing - so while I wanted to be honest that it did not work for me, objectively it is a good pack.
5 KG of gear is totally doable for the Camino
I'd say for the typical gear, yes. ;)
