Forget IWC, Rolex, Tudor, Watches & Wonders: The Hottest Brand Of 2023 IMO + Depthmaster Unboxing
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 кві 2023
- In today's video I share my thoughts on new releases from Rolex, Tudor, IWC, and Watches and Wonders, and why most of them don't interest me. I discuss how I truly stay interested in watches and collecting them, despite the vapid clickbait hype, exploitative market, and social media being ruined by watch dealers. We then take a look at which watch brand is doing it right in 2023, and most importantly, what makes them so hot compared to everyone else. I also share an unboxing and mini review of a truly remarkable watch, which happens to be the best automatic affordable $1000 alternative to Panerai, from a Swiss heritage brand. Join me for another essential Urban Gentry video to find out why the Nivada Grenchen Depthmaster is so special and what I got wrong about their F77 watch. What do you think about Nivada Grenchen watches? Please share in the comments.

The Gentry Channel is really going its own way and I appreciate it. Your loyal fan of many years.
Yea actually a few years for me too
TGV, you are of the few enthusiasts left on this platform creating videos for enthusiasts. Your passion shines through with every video.
🙌🙌🙌 Onwards and ever upwards! Thank you for the kind words of support, I really appreciate it.
Best regards,
TGV
Oh yes oh yes. The Depthmaster . What a beauty!!! One of my favourite watches I got my hands on last year and I’m desperate to get a Chronomaster in!!!!!!!!!! All the best my friend!!
The godfather’s shade. Best in the game. “Does it even exist?” “No-one has ever made that enjoyable.” 😅. I stand with you.
Its always interesting to see a youtuber walk around the corner and BOOM, there's the studio. Plus I dig TGV making the morning java with a $5k Panerai peeking out from the sleeve of his robe.
Been a fan of the channel for years. The videos evolved and evolved in terms of the craft of the narrative as well as the editing style. But what I truly appreciate is that TGV always stays true to its own style. And with all the watch enthusiast UA-camrs that entered the space and made the community of watch enthusiasts grow, this channel is still my absolute favorite.
The brand which finally get more attention is Baume Et Mercier.
New Riviera 39mm, Riviera Perpetual Calendar or Clifton Moon-Phase are absolutely beautiful watches. The whole package with their in house movement are amazing.
I just bought for myself Clifton Club before I get Riviera.
YESSSSSS I need to check them out, long over due. Thank you for sharing that.
Best regards,
TGV
@@theurbangentry I would like to see review also one of Monta watches and new Farer Moonphase on your channel. I really appreciate your honest opinion even if sometimes I disagree is always constructive and very well presented. 👌🏻
I watch every video you made, you have one of my favourite watch channel on YT.
💯 passion
Best Regards!
Dawid
@@theurbangentry Totally agree. Got my old man a Clifton moonphase recently. Finally upgraded him from that ghastly Skagen. It's absolutely amazing. Wearing it often. Still thinks I'm crazy tho🤣🤣
I must say this channel grows on me more and more. Not being a watch dealer adds extra credibility.
There are two watches that gained my attention at W&W 2023. The Tudor GMT with the praline white dial, and the Patek Calatrava in 3 fun colors.
Fantastic to break up the mid-day monotony with another superlative TGV video. Thanks for brightening my Monday, mate!!
Still the King of the introductions! Outstanding sir!
I’m sitting here at my kitchen table, taking a break from some evening work to watch TGV, enjoying my Tudor BB 36. Your thoughts on the cultural and historical significance of these interesting antediluvian gadgets is always a welcome distraction. I appreciate your willingness to remark on the normative aspects of things. Keep up the good work.
You done it again🔥🔥 And your music choice is always on point. The mix between the intro keeping you engaged. And the classical to wind you down.👏🏾👏🏾Ps my Sinn U1 DS limited to 500 pieces does 1000m. Great review.
Your take on UA-cam and watch collecting is refreshing. Watching these vids is more like viewing a docuseries. Excellent content as usual.
Thank you Travis! 🙌🙌🙌
Best regards as always,
T.
Love your videos, favourite UA-camr and watch enthusiast by far. Thank you for all of your content and for introducing me into the world of watches.
Another wonderful video grounded in common sense and humbleness, life gets absolutely saturated in every way these days and finding something fresh and interesting is eye opening. All the best sir 🤙🏻
I really appreciate your approach to having the watch in hand first before you make a video. So many channels talk about watches they know nothing about. The recent Timex Q 3 time zone chronograph was a prime example where channels got confused about which hour hand is tied to the 24 subdial.
Thank you for the videos. Enjoy kicking back in the evening on the weekend and watching the content. I find them very relaxing and the viewing mixes well with a small glass of Pendleton Reserve. Here's a toast to you my good sir.
Love those slippers! This made me laugh so much, I've had a real creative funk with my videos of late because I wanted to move away from talking about all the hype... but it's so hard to think of content and of course to get hands on with watches... thankfully I've started to build a goed network who are happy to lend me their watches.
Always enjoy your videos. I've taken a break from watch channels but this one pulled me back in
As usual, great video. Nevada Grenchen, Lorier, and Baltic make it very difficult for me to look at other Micro Brands as they make exceptional watches. Those combined with Seiko make it easy to avoid the "big boys" while still having an exceptional watch collection (well, OK, I do own a 1962 Gold Omega Sea master too).
I just got done watching your first video (Indeed better than Starbucks!) just for old times' sake! Good to hear that you haven't forgotten! ;)
You really are becoming UA-cam's watch-godfather with intro's like these, and deservedly so. Another classic in the book my friend!
Ciao!
Still going strong and having an independent mindset, no clickbaiting but true enthusiasm. Thanks!
I think we're long overdue for another day in the life video, TGV. That intro! 🤣
Thanks to watches and wonders I stumbled on a fairly new watch brand by accident. There was a very expensive rectangular watch at the show and I tried to find out more about it just for fun and stumbled on the same shape watch but at a fraction of the price. Moels & Co Thunderhead. Probably will end up in my collection somewhere this year. So watches and wonders can lead to fun unexpected things.
Your introduction is a bit of a summary of the early part of the year for me-it made me smile. There are still a handful of watches which interest me, but I am enjoying those that I have. Your Universal Geneve is a gorgeous watch-congratulations. As always, thanks for your channel which I always enjoy. Best-David
The video editing is great. I like that you try other brands beyond the same top ones which everyone else talks about.
I like that Nivada brought a design back from their own past (but cheaped out with the ranger hands) as its very practical and tool-like. I agree in the faux patina...give me brand new green color! Great vid as usual!
Thanks TGV, been following you for awhile now. You are still doing well here, thanks for the review and fun opening segment!
Great video, as always. Thank you, kind Sr.
This channel has gotten me into watch collecting.
I like that no matter the price of a piece you always give great information about each.
Would never have looked at Depthmaster without this coverage, or Squale until reading about Von Buren and all the cool coverage here with historical context. Really appreciate the contribution to the horological community and us WISs.
Nivada is so interesting - the Depthmaster and the Super Antarctic both top my list. Agree much of the W&W news is predictable and not interesting. You had some really excellent video production here - the screen fade/switch from day to night to show the lume was something I've not seen before. As always, well done and thank you.
Thank you for turning the Watches & Wonders hype upside down with this review. It is refreshing and very informative. I will say for W&W this year that Tudor over all has the most intriguing pieces for my tastes. That 54 and the BB 36 varieties really caught my attention. The 1908 from Rolex is an eye catcher as well. Shout to the Qualita Oro! One of my favorite coffees as well. Best always, TGV.
You really make the hest videos. Great editing. Everything so smooth. Overvoice on point. Colors great! Music hit it on point over and over. Really good!!
Nice one TGV, at last not yet another persons perspective on a hand full of watches released over the last week or so that arguably in some cases are for hype. That Depthmaster looks fantastic and shouldn't require the sale of a major organ or two just to get onto a wait list. It's great to continue to see a real independent review of our little wrist time telling (or is that measuring?) machines either mechanical or powered by a box of sparks. This is why I continue to subscribe to the channel. Great work.
Thank you for the great content, as always! I do remember that skinny guy brewing coffee video - pure class;)))!
Thank goodness for a new TGV video. Keeps me sane. Love the Nivada F77 - they have flown off the shelves. I also share your taste for posters though in my case it's classic vintage railway posters that keep robbing my wallet.
I just enjoyed the Seiko museum on my recent Japan trip, just awesome. Coincidently, they had a W&W exhibit too. Plus, I had to pick up a GS, which is quickly becoming a tradition when i visit. I cannot wait to see your impressions of such a beautiful country and culture.
Your videos are pure class and I learn so much. Love this watch you reviewed. All the hoopla about the newest Rolex (and other smaller or larger versions of the same watches) bore me. My most expensive watch is the Seiko SPB143 and I like it that way. Thanks again!
Loved the intro!! That's literally my wife every morning. Great video. Love Nivada watches; I really like the black carbon fiber dial. Cheers! Good health to you!
I'm going to put on that Lavazza video tonight, it has so much charm in its own way and is a great reminder of how much someone can develop a passion project over the course of ten years. Absolutely killer robe, too. I'm a sucker for elevated lounge wear. Show stealer today, though, is the second hand on the Depthmaster. Incredibly cool. Another great episode!
You know, I've had a fair amount of watch synacism over the last 6 months about watches and consumerism being a substitute for passion. However your channel does a good job of keeping me interested in what I like about watches. Keep making great content TGV!
Brilliant! The intro immediately brought to mind.....
"How to Make Better Coffee than Starbucks for Half the Price!"
... your videos and what you've built have come a long way. It's been a fun ride! Thank you.
Lorier and Jack Mason, in my opinion, are looking to have the best microbrand releases this year. Lorier already crushed it with the updates to their models and are making the Hydra a traveler’s GMT with the Miyota 9075 and now have the Astra which is a beautiful dressy sports watch. Jack Mason has turned a complete 180 with the
Strat-O-Timer and now the release of the Hydrotimer. The quality and that new clasp is a game changer and I can’t wait to get my hands on the gilt Hydrotimer. I think imma go broke this year with all these fantastic releases!
I will check it out, I am not aware of this brand in detail, I only have heard the name in passing, thank you for brining it to my attention.
Best regards,
TGV
@@theurbangentry I had heard of them and looked at their catalog but before the Strat-O-Timer, their watches were not very interesting and a little pricey for the specs. Now that they’ve changed the logo to the Lone star and started to really come out with some new fresh designs, it’s changed my mind on them and I’m really excited to see what else they’ll release this year! Love your vids😁
Love the extended intro… Another great video… Pure class!
The intro was very relatable, the video great as always. Thanks TGV
Hey TGV thanks for another great video. Hope you have a great week and a speedy delivery on your package lol!
TGV you make the absolute most of the resources you have, including your "studio." I agree with taking a break from huge trade shows and concentrating instead on what you do best: buying fascinating, historically important watches and reviewing them with your inimitable style. Everyone takes a pause to reconsider from time to time, and we like this channel (if I can be so bold to speak for others) because of those reviews and conversations, not so much the trade show action.
I'd like to see you and Marc do a video just about the various books you two have about watches. That would be educational and hilarious: he can cover the technical and engineering side and so forth. Truth to tell, I really enjoy the way you leaf through your beautiful book collection during the reviews.
Carry on with courage, fortitude and tenacity! The other day, a young girl in a supermarket parking lot saw that sticker and asked her mother what a "tensity" was and I said: "Ten-a-city sweetie. It means something like "determination" if you know that word. One day I hope you also learn that it's a 16th century transliteration from the Latin!" and her mom laughed. Anyway, I have that sticker in the rear window of my car, but now I think it's time for a coffee mug...I wonder where that idea came from? lol.
P.S. ---> There are various emulators for Windows 95, including one that runs in the browser! I haven't tried them but it might be worth a shot!
The intro was fun and original! Good stuff TGV.
Hands down best videos on UA-cam! Watch knowledge unparalleled. But aside from that the genuine creativity and charisma of your videos is league above any other creator. I appreciate your work sir.
I definitely saw the nod to the Tudor black bay that looks so much like the TGV Squale collab that came out prior to watches and wonders. Real evidence of style and taste being ahead of it’s time.
Another Nivada! I'm still sweet on the chrono, and that diver is an eye-opener as well. I get your reticence for chasing flavor-of-the-week releases (W&W, etc.), but I'll admit getting a guilty-pleasure kick from watching the frenzy from afar...and then returning to my mild-mannered watch selections (and your videos, natch). Keep up the cool work.
Always loved the intros! Best wishes for health and happiness! Loyal OG fan since 2016¡
You and Adrian are two of my favorite UA-camrs. Love the subtle joke. Laughed way too hard
Another thoroughly enjoyable, informative and satisfying video TGV.
Absolute blast of fresh air after all the Watches and Wonders blah blah blah about uninspiring releases that the vast majority of us will never have access too, even if we can afford the MSRP.
Keep up the great work!
Just checked their website. OMG half of production is sold out! Hard to get hands on them, congrats. Will order 1 once green dial will be available
Great video as always. It has been funny seeing a whole host of channels who were recently releasing videos bashing Rolex and saying how they won't buy another one falling over themselves to lick the boot now there a few new releases that most of us have no chance of experiencing even if we have the means.
You along with a few other channels are excellent on lesser known brands. I most likely would not have looked into either Squale or Fortis both of whom do not really advertise at all and aren't readily available at mainstream outlets in the UK without seeing them here.
Now a very happy owner of a Y1545 and an F41.
Keep up the good work.
Love this intro! I’ve been drinking tea a lot lately. Bone china is something else. You’ve gotta make it to the Seiko Museum. If the new Rolex line was a lot smaller. Wish they’ make a new Veraflat/Oyster Thin.
What a great way to start the week, thanks TGV
I' m so glad you continue to not chase the hype and focus on the happiness of watch enthusiasm. I will say, I think you would enjoy the new Tag Heuer Carrara. That new bezel-less design looks very cool to me.
Really refreshing content! Even if the watch is not my Cup of tea. And as Always.. what a hell of work you put in editing.
Talking about 1000m dive watches, one of the most interesting piece is the Baume & Mercier Capeland S XXL. It was a fail when it came out and B&M discontinued it quickly. Now there is a cult around it.
Hi T.
Looong time fan. Just wanna say love your videos because you are different than others. Keep going man. Cheers. M
Fantastic video as always, can't wait to check out this new to me brand. I have a desire to get a new watch that can handle my everyday tasks but still be unique and classy.
As a competitor, my 2020 Zelos hammerhead bronze is 1000m DR and has a helium escapement valve plus it's 31 of 100 made...originally priced around $800
Great review... And I love the fact your not on the band wagon with the "New releases"
Keep up thr great work Sir.
And.... Where did you get the dressing gown... Touché
Funny I was just checking out the Nivada Grenchen Super Antarctic 32026A because my father went to Antartica in the 50s on that Navel exploration that this watch is commemorating. I am very interested in this watch because he just passed I wanted to commemorate him with this watch, and such a cool micro brand with all their offerings. A Very cool dive watch you’re reviewing as well. Thanks for the dive into Nivada Grenchen !!
Your channel helped me so much at the beginning of my watch journey. Very long time ago
Good to see you ol chap! Great video as always! Knowing you were into Nicolas Windings movies thought about if you had checked out Copenhagen Cowboy. Ah yes Tiberian Sun agreed overdue for a remake, also can warmly recommend COH3!
Farer has had my attention for a while now, but their recent release of the Lander IV in 36mm is hard to pass up. I also love what Zenith is doing. The Defy Revival Shadow in 37mm looks amazing. I bought their 38mm Chronomaster last year though, so sadly I can’t justify another one 😅 yet…
Have an older model Oris Aquis, that I bought because of your recommendation and have beaten to a fare the well! Watched this video on the green dial Nivada Depthmaster, and it has given me ideas!
Hello TGV, thanks for the unboxing of the Nivada, I was very curious also about this brand and I'm glad that the diver looks so much better in video than in their website !
On the "same" range let's say, I found out the Echo/Neutra Cristallo and this brand produces in the Dolomite where I have my origins !
We all watch videos and are all influenced by a different spectrum of information and babbling. Your content however is very refreshing and I find I learn something with every video. I admire how you are not swayed by big brands or trends so we get an honest opinion and review. Keep at it my good sir.
Thank you for another great video mate. I enjoyed every second. Please keep it coming.
I just acquired a Carl F. Bucherer scuba tech and I love it. Granted it’s more in price but regardless it’s a tank and it fits my 8 inch wrist. Hope you present it some day.
The BEST watch channel on UA-cam! Keep up the great work TGV!
I think I may have thought of a piece that meets the DepthMaster specs and beats the price…..but first-
How refreshing! TGV, you have been original and inspirational from the beginning. I still remember when you first dropped that coffee video. In fact, I purchased a Bialetti Mocha Express for my mother due to that video. She had wanted a better way to make good coffee, and she still uses it to this day! You have come a incredibly long way, but are still rooted in originality and have an honest interest in helping your fellow man.
I would like to commend you on not falling into the trap of talking about W&W. Thank you. I too was uninspired by this years onslaught of samey-samey…..I do have to say, I think Rolex are moving Tudor into the traditional level that the professional model Rolex occupied and Rolex is moving into a higher level (PP,AP,VC) type space. THE FOLLOWING IS JUST CONJECTURE BUT INTERESTING….I was speaking to my AD….there is rumor in the very innermost circles that Patek has been acquired by Rolex. Both are privately owned. No one would necessarily have to make it known. Notice how the Cellini is gone. Notice how there are now see through casebacks on several Rolex models. LOOK AT THE COIN EDGE BEZEL that is very Calatrava-sequel on the “new” 1908. Both of these are things that Rolex said it wasn’t interested in. Now I have no clue to the validity of such a suggestion…..BUT YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST and I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised. Would be sad for Patek to be absorbed. That would be earth shattering.
The Big Block wasn’t a 3,6,9 dial was it? If I remember correctly it was 6,9,12 with date at 3. Or is that the Tiger. If you really want an accessible BigBlock look at a brand Marc has just recently started carrying. I think you will find the LeJour Lemans to be shockingly good. I love mine. It is thick though.
Now the DepthMaster…..what a incredibly cool piece. They are already nearly sold out it would seem. The PacMan dial is incredibly original and quite fun. I think, possibly, perhaps, just maybe I remembered a piece that might actually beat it though as a 1000m, HV equipped, Swiss watch that beat the DepthMaster. It isn’t a homage, it is completely original, and extremely few people are aware it exists due to the brands “Rolex homage” watch reputation. Enter the Steinhart Triton 1000 IN TITANIUM!!
Excellent work my friend! Thanks so much for being traditional, original, and creative all at the same time. You are THE diamond in the rough. Superb. Be well, my friend. Onward and upward!
Highly educational and entertaining as always, TGV.
So glad you did the lightest of touches on Watches and Wonders, I try ever so hard to avoid its boredom inducing impact. The NG watch that has really impressed me is the Chronomaster, lovely looking watch. Personally, I am starting to go down the independent watchmaker rabbit hole. Having a watch that is vastly different from anyone else really does appeal. But this works in the branded field also. I would take a Squale or Hemel or Panerai every day over something bland and common.
Brilliant content again 👌 👏
0:54-1:04 😅😊- - WOW! ... I remember that video like it was yesterday (and watched every video since) - - Does that make me an OG Gentry? ... Perhaps, a Great Grand OG Gentry!
Impassioned, original, and knowledgeable. I enjoyed this video greatly. Thank you
Great Video again. Thanks for your great statements. And I appreciate that you didn't went to W&W only to show us what everybody showed us about watches we can't effort and brands who don't give a thing about us.
Btw. I would love to point you on a german watch brand you propably never heared of but you should: Lehmann. Located near Schramberg of Junghans. If you got time someday check his watches, especially his masterpiece movements.
They produce everything by their own. Cases, Movements, Dials and even the Hands.
They even producing their own machines for the watch manufacturing. (The family owned before and still owns a company to produce high precise machines for watchproducers).
I would love to see you reviewing the Longines Ultra -Chron. This watch has some really nice traits and in my opinion is not yet discussed to death already! Love the Channel!!!!👍👍
I Commented on the last show "BANG ON " TGV...... I must apologise for repetition , but you are BANG ON again... So sick of all the "NEW" Releases... there's no imagination anymore. just a whacky dial. different case size .AND Extremely High prices .. YAAAWWWWN..
Love these Nivadas .. very nice watches..
The command and conquer series was my all time favorite. I have all of the games still in the jewel cases. I laughed when you mentioned buying a win95 computer just to play the C&C game. :)
Great video.
I was impressed by Mido Ocean Star GMT and Mido Ocean Star Decompression Worldtimer. They are like Certina, making great watches and for awesome price ;)
I'm always very impressed with the quality of your videos. Bravo. Btw I've not seen you review a Sinn watch in a while. U50 DS / T50?
Love the Depthmaster, green especially. Now, I'll never have a thousand dollars to spend on a watch, but if, someday, I DO win the lottery, this will be on my list. Thanks for sharing!
I would have to agree with some of the previous comments, a Baume & Mercier Riviera review would be great! It has to be one of my favorite watches of all time, and one I wish to own one day. TGV, I would definitely like your review of Eberhard and CO, since it is one of the most popular brands in Italy 🇮🇹 !! I love my Traversetolo!!
After seeing this video yet again, I've ended up buying a Depthmaster. I have a Radiomir so I get the 'Baby Panerai' reference. Thanks for your excellent reviews!
Always love the production of your videos.
Good vid TGV, always love the pure honesty. It is refreshing to see you owning a Panerai... It's still a controversial watch, but classy. O/U 🥃🥃🥃
The brands that I am impressed with the new releases? Timex, I love, and my wife bought me, the new Marlin “subdial”..I find the 60s retro vibe case, pleasing to look at. It is comfortable as well. I am excited for the new Tissot “chemin des tourelles” I think the refined case, the simple dial, the thinness and the movement, is just beautiful. Yes, also Tudor, the black bay 54. Lol…I love the smaller size, how they refined the watch (from the 58) and the thinness! Even though, it doesn’t have the red triangle and the bezel is different..I just think it is cool, although some would say “boring”, I am going to go try it on this week…and see how it looks on my 7 inch wrist..but I am excited for this smaller version…I wish other divers and brands would go smaller..to me, it just looks better. Those are the 3 brands that excite me the most! I know I am the odd man out with Timex, but man, they have been crushing it. IMO. 😊
I am not an expert as yourself concerning watches & your other interesting pursuits; which is why I like seeing your videos to continue learning new things... I like your take on alternatives to the "big boys" as there is no reason why one can have a quality watch without going to the poorhouse as a result...😊...In this video, you described yourself as being the sum of a varied, complicated world view - a perfect mindset for the rest of the video, separating the wheat from the chaff...
i. e., the "big boys" are not the "end all" & it is good they know they have competition....otherwise, why do they have the yearly shows as you described? Because they know competitors are nipping at their heels & people such as yourself are explaining the nuances & explaining there are fresh alternatives out there...😊
On the lighter side, you are bloody brilliant! 😂 Not only did you take on the "evil martinis" & barely lived as well as severely punishing the "harbinger of time", you decided to complicate things by quaffing "Sudden Death!" 😂 Talk about the "hair of the dog!"😂
“THE POWER OF GREYSKULL”… well said TGV. As a relatively high income earner with a young family, mortgage blah blah blah… Rolex, Omega, Tudor is simply unattainable. I find great joy in the sub $1K category. Social media is a vacuous hell hole!
Most wealthy people that I know have one or two luxury watches, and often wear a sub $1000 watch day to day.
The wealthiest guy I know wears a $200 Seiko most days
I cannot wait to watch this when I get home! Have a great day
TGV you are a gem in the watch world. Keep doing what you do!
Great video as ever. Edox is also offering a great 1000m diver with their Neptunian. It’s a Swiss brand with a great history that is always under the radar. Would love to see of of their offering getting the TGV treatment. I recently got their COSC certified Hydro-sub and it’s a stunner for the price.
Always great content TGV, I too think the 1908 was the sole interesting thing from W&W, other than that, just mega hype with pretty much more of the same IMO. Stay you, be well TGV ✌️😏
Very classy channel.also great humour. Nice one
As a Tech channel I cant go without my nerdy CASIO Databank ❤️😍
