My favorite part of getting new paint is getting the paper off! I seems to satisfy my love for candy(I know it’s weird). I think Kristie’s brushes are phenomenal and her teaching style is even better. She and Emma Jane are the only two that hold my attention! I’ve tried to watch others but they talk too much or mumbling and use terms that I’m not familiar with. Your characters are adorable. I don’t have any kind of imagination so seeing your characters was a treat.
Here from Sarah's channel - also love Kristy's channel! Your mushies are gorgeous! I wouldn't bother with blue sky, too much solid colour in a background can detract from watercolour and I don't feel like these need it. The white of the paper is your light with watercolour. You don't seem overly keen on paint splatters. You might prefer a more subtle splatter effect. Try sketching out a mushy, then use a piece of scrap paper to cover the area where your grass will go. Wet the rest of the background, carefully painting up to the edges of the mushy with just water. Use your hand to shield the mushy and then splatter wet into wet. The pigment will disperse leaving faded hints of colour when dry. I love the look this creates and often also use it as a background to my mixed media (coloured pencils etc). Let it dry fully and then paint in your mushy and grass with whichever technique you most prefer. Love what I've seen of your channel so far and I'm looking forward to more.
The mushie family is my favourite. I particularly love the mushie mum's cap. The blooms are gorgeous. When I want to do a simple and quick blue sky with watercolours, I start out by wetting the entire sky area, then I drop in some blues, and let them swirl together. If I use too much water, too much colour, or decide I want clouds, I use a crumpled paper towel to do a bit of strategic blotting. And that's it.
That's the beautiful thing about watercolour though - you can use them loose and free, or more rigidly like ink. they're really adaptable in that way. And when you watch enough Kristy videos you see she sometimes really pushes her colours around to get the effects she wants occasionally too.
I want her brushes so badly ive got too many watercolors already lol. Shes really such a sweetheart and so relatable lol. I told her once on a video that shes the the art teacher i always wanted but never had.
Thanks for being so open about your journey here. Stick with it! Watercolor is so different from other mediums, you have to learn to let go of that control. Sometimes it's difficult to turn off the drawing brain and let the painting brain have a go. I would also recommended thefrugalcrafter Lyndsay Weirich as a watercolor artist. She's an OG UA-camr with beautiful watercolor skills.

I really love your content. As a "beginner artist"- I've been sketching since forever but finally delving into my own style and more professional products- it really makes me feel like I can do it and it's okay to make mistakes. I have to say, I really like the mushy with the thin black outline- it gives a sort of storybook effect!
So as a person who is a little scared of water colours seeing some one else work with them and have the same issues, it's nice to see that it can be overcome. That said if you would like more control of your watercolours I am learning that that is okay too. Thomas Romain who has a channel here uses watercolours to achieve a almost cel shaded effect and it looks good. But it was lovely to see that yes I can get past that need for control and let the watercolours just be. Also I personally loved all the mushrooms. I think the brown outline worked best though as it went with the softer watercolour look you were going for.
The red and blue mushrooms are my favorite pieces. I feel like watercolors look best in a fluid way rather than with sharp lines (though the reverse drawing/painting is pretty cool too). Maybe try to make your own splatters and the draw something. ❤❤
The stiffness of new brushes is a good thing. It’s called sizing and it’s used to hold the shape of the brush. I use brush shaper to resize any brush that’s lost it’s point and or shape. You just wash it out with water.

Hi Di😁 One big thing with watercolor is learning about water control. You should look up youtuber Anna Bucciarelli, Thomas W Schaller(his stuff is AMAZING!). There's more but i cant think of any right now 😄 Anywhoot, your watercolor painting was fine. There is no right way or wrong way to watercolor. You did great! It takes time to know a medium. The more you do it, the better you get and the more you will find what's comfortable for you. To dry faster use a hair dryer. Happy painting!
Love all the mushrooms! I think you may find that as you play with the watercolours you may find that your outlines could also become looser. I have a gorgeous butterfly watercolour painting (not done by me) where the top is quite controlled but the bottom very loose. The black outline loosens up too. Hope this makes sense.🧐😊

As a mushie fan myself, the mushrooms are adorable. I like how you worked into the wet-on-wet to discover that's what you like best. I like the look of it too. Not that the others aren't good or cute, but I like the look of the wet-on-wet better. And I think I prefer no outline a bit better, but I don't like the "splashes" or flicks of paint on those particular pictures. It didn't feel like it belonged on them. Otherwise, well done for trying something outside your comfort zone. I haven't tried watercolour and want to try it. You can absolutely do very clean, illustrative, "non-flowy" watercolor paintings if you want to, there's no style nor technique you have to stick to. It's art, there's no rules you have to follow lest the Art Police come arrest you, no worries ✨ A lot of people are giving you tips but some of them might not work well depending on your art supplies (such as lifting paint, it might not work if the paint is hard to reactivate and/or if it's very staining), I would reccomend checking out a few of Dr Oto Kano's videos. She does a lot of extensive breakdowns of different paints, and while the goal of her videos is to compare paint brands, the reason I'd reccomend her work is that you can really learn the different qualities of different paints and that should help you figure out what you can and can't do with certain paints. Like if you try a technique and it doesn't work, it might not be you "doing it wrong", it might just be the paint itself not being compatible with the technique
So relatable! The trying to let go of control, the hot flushes, the procrastination :) All your little pictures look great. I like the mushroom bits where you did the wet on wet and mixed it up with the different colours. Although they're obviously not 'real' mushrooms, the more organic variations in colour make them look more natural, just with a fantasy spin. I think I prefer without the paint splatters but mostly don't mind either way. If you like mushrooms you might like the "mycoporn" subreddit .. lots of amazing photos of fabulous fungi! But I take no responsibility for you wasting time there.. :)
Love your enthusiasm and i agree Kristy Rice has an abundance. As a Perth girl myself i loved that you were spoilt at jacksons drawing by Sarah. The tip i would give is to lable your pans with a sharpie. I usually add the brand and pigment on each pan incase i use it in another palette..

If you want to paint simple, easy skies that I definitely think you'll be able to do, based on what I saw in this video, you can just wet the sky, then add some light blues, and then use a tissue to lift out some clouds. It's so fun. Also, I'm a 45 year old who just started an art channel a year ago. It's still smol, but I'd love it if you stopped by to say hi! I love finding other artists close to my age with channels!

Di, you can also lift the watercolour paint once it’s on the paper to fix “mistakes”. Just reactivate it and wash your brush between each lift. 😊 There is a couple of other watercolour artists I think that are worth a watch as well. I’ll link them under this comment. Hi The paint splatter (don't konw if it's the right english term)over the left hand on your first moshroom with the washi tap looks like a big messy paint brush. This moshie looks tired but satisfied after getting paint all over it and it's environment. I really love it. How about drawing Yt or the heros in this book like moshroom? 💝💝💝💝
Your mushies are so cute! I like the wet on wet technique. I am undecided about the outlines. Some look better with, and some look better without. Mom with babies is my favorite. I'd like to see one with a blue sky background and clouds.
Masking fluid could be a good tool for you if you wanted to mask off the mushrooms first, you'd have freedom to paint the sky/background however you wanted then paint the lil mushies in after that. I have a pen that is filled with masking fluid that makes it super easy but they also have pots you can dip into and paint too.
Binge watching your channel while I do a $5 Kmart paint by number trying to learn to paint IN the lines after discovering watercolour during lockdown. It’s been a fun challenge, but definitely had to buy some better brushes. Im SO inspired to go paint some mushrooms after this!
I think it's okay to tell watercolors what to do. And it's also okay to let them flow and have a mind of their own. I think it's just two different styles of working with watercolors. Neither is right nor wrong. They're just different. It just depends on what you prefer or maybe even what you prefer in that moment.
I was not going to say anything about Kristy’s techniques, but she is way to loosely goosey for me. I purchased her brushes for support but I need to use more controlled techniques and keep my paints in line and controlled. You can do both! Just let go when you want to be loose and then throttle down when you want to control the painting! I know that you will find a balance or choosing when to let go! I’ve always had watercolor works best working back to front so put your background in first. You might need to use frisket or masking fluid to keep your foreground white and ready to paint. I’ve never been a fan of this better technique but everyone seems to use it these days I think goes in and out of fashion. My Gran once wracked my knuckles with her number 12 round when I was splattering my painting and she said no decent artist would do that in their painting! Painting is NOT for lazy people! She was very old school!
Love all the cute little mushrooms! Sometimes if you use color pencil on the outline of watercolor the outline doesn’t look so bold and harsh in contrast. You can also add some shade or highlights that you think could have been missed.
The colours are stunning i use pretty cheap watercolor so not that mich pigmentation. Normally i am an outline girl but with watercolor i think it needs to be subtle bc it can overshadow the paint. I like the one without outline en with the brown outline best . Btw tnx for your videos i needed this today having the flu and no voice i needed a smile 😁

I am laughing at you, as I film and have the same big head problem. I actually realise I need to tie my hair back, because its the fuzzy hair that annoys me the most with filming. And yeah my head is very bog too. i remember having to buy the XL mens size baseball cap, because the ladies ones didn't fit. So yes, I totally relate to all of that. I actually would love those paints. I am not watercolor artists, but I have had the same ones in my Amazon wish list for a while. They seem like the right level to learn with.
I have been following Kristy for awhile now, I needed tips like yourself on how to use the medium. I too am a control freak. So far I have only used water paint on dry in colouring books. I need to practice more. Well done another great video. What do you do with your finished pieces? I often wonder this after watching arty videos.
Stupid tip - if you wanna be more lose, use a bigger round brush to fill in bigger areas, and then use the detail brush for - details! Its one of the tips I keep in the back of my head for when I feel stressed.
You’re being a little hard on yourself. Watercolour painting is hard for control, especially the figures and tight details. Gouache might be alittle easier. Love the mushrooms

Love your enthusiasm and i agree Kristy Rice has an abundance. As a Perth girl myself i loved that you were spoilt at jacksons drawing by Sarah. The tip i would give is to lable your pans with a sharpie. I usually add the brand and pigment on each pan incase i use it in another palette..

If you want to paint simple, easy skies that I definitely think you'll be able to do, based on what I saw in this video, you can just wet the sky, then add some light blues, and then use a tissue to lift out some clouds. It's so fun. Also, I'm a 45 year old who just started an art channel a year ago. It's still smol, but I'd love it if you stopped by to say hi! I love finding other artists close to my age with channels!

What is your favorite medium? I would of done the same as you a ridged drawing with watercolors. I love how the watercolors make the drawings looks. The texture of the watercolors it’s really nice.

Di, you can also lift the watercolour paint once it’s on the paper to fix “mistakes”. Just reactivate it and wash your brush between each lift. 😊

I believe, your decision to make what you really like is the best. You can repeat after teacher, but if it's not your theme, the result, even a good one, might be not so satisfying as when you doing what is really yours. And I think, your mushrooms are very cute. The paint splatter (don't konw if it's the right english term)over the left hand on your first moshroom with the washi tap looks like a big messy paint brush. This moshie looks tired but satisfied after getting paint all over it and it's environment. I really love it.
How about drawing Yt or the heros in this book like moshroom?

Your mushies are so cute! I like the wet on wet technique. I am undecided about the outlines. Some look better with, and some look better without. Mom with babies is my favorite. I'd like to see one with a blue sky background and clouds.

Masking fluid could be a good tool for you if you wanted to mask off the mushrooms first, you'd have freedom to paint the sky/background however you wanted then paint the lil mushies in after that. I have a pen that is filled with masking fluid that makes it super easy but they also have pots you can dip into and paint too.

Binge watching your channel while I do a $5 Kmart paint by number trying to learn to paint IN the lines after discovering watercolour during lockdown. It’s been a fun challenge, but definitely had to buy some better brushes. Im SO inspired to go paint some mushrooms after this!
Oh Kmart, our saviour during lockdown 😆 While everyone else was hoarding loo paper, I was hoarding crafting supplies and LEGO 😁
I think it's okay to tell watercolors what to do. And it's also okay to let them flow and have a mind of their own. I think it's just two different styles of working with watercolors. Neither is right nor wrong. They're just different. It just depends on what you prefer or maybe even what you prefer in that moment.

I was not going to say anything about Kristy’s techniques, but she is way to loosely goosey for me. I purchased her brushes for support but I need to use more controlled techniques and keep my paints in line and controlled. You can do both! Just let go when you want to be loose and then throttle down when you want to control the painting! I know that you will find a balance or choosing when to let go! I’ve always had watercolor works best working back to front so put your background in first. You might need to use frisket or masking fluid to keep your foreground white and ready to paint. I’ve never been a fan of this better technique but everyone seems to use it these days I think goes in and out of fashion. My Gran once wracked my knuckles with her number 12 round when I was splattering my painting and she said no decent artist would do that in their painting! Painting is NOT for lazy people! She was very old school!
Love all the cute little mushrooms! Sometimes if you use color pencil on the outline of watercolor the outline doesn’t look so bold and harsh in contrast. You can also add some shade or highlights that you think could have been missed.

The colours are stunning i use pretty cheap watercolor so not that mich pigmentation. Normally i am an outline girl but with watercolor i think it needs to be subtle bc it can overshadow the paint. I like the one without outline en with the brown outline best . Btw tnx for your videos i needed this today having the flu and no voice i needed a smile 😁

I am laughing at you, as I film and have the same big head problem. I actually realise I need to tie my hair back, because its the fuzzy hair that annoys me the most with filming. And yeah my head is very bog too. i remember having to buy the XL mens size baseball cap, because the ladies ones didn't fit. So yes, I totally relate to all of that.
I actually would love those paints. I am not watercolor artists, but I have had the same ones in my Amazon wish list for a while. They seem like the right level to learn with.

I have been following Kristy for awhile now, I needed tips like yourself on how to use the medium. I too am a control freak. So far I have only used water paint on dry in colouring books. I need to practice more. Well done another great video. What do you do with your finished pieces? I often wonder this after watching arty videos.
My finished pieces are just floating around in a drawer 😂 I should really do something about that 😉

Stupid tip - if you wanna be more lose, use a bigger round brush to fill in bigger areas, and then use the detail brush for - details! Its one of the tips I keep in the back of my head for when I feel stressed.

You’re being a little hard on yourself. Watercolour painting is hard for control, especially the figures and tight details. Gouache might be alittle easier. Love the mushrooms
With watercolor creators on UA-cam one of my favorite is Scott Christian Sava @ssavaart he is amazing with portraits and hair definitely hair, he also has an amazing travel journal where he paints his adventures. Definitely worth a check out ❤
