Don't forget: While Reg's arm cannon is essentially able to deal with ANY threat, the consequence of using it is he will pass out for two hours soon after. In that span of time his traveling companions could be slaughtered while he sleeps.
Not to mention that it uses up his energy. The more he uses it, the more energy spends. If he uses it too much he will completely shut down until he gets recharged

This isn't really a kids show. It's just an anime about children who are put in an extremely dangerous situation by exploring a dangerous place. This isn't a new phenomena, either. Since Madoka Magica, the amount of "cute, yet disturbing" anime that have been getting spewed out has increased. Made in Abyss is just one of the better ones.
"But cartoons are for kids!" Sorry, just had to put it there. But yeah to be fair, this story dares to do things I've never seen other stories even attempt to do. Like actually thinking out how actual wildlife would try to survive in such harsh environments, and how it affects the humans trying to explore it all. Like the village of Vueko, that came to be just simply because wildlife threatened them enough to use whatever means necessary to survive, even if it wound up costing maybe more than death would have to them. It is all just creatures trying to survive in the hell that is "the abyss". And that is also why I love it so much, it is not trying to be horror more than natural fear (and Bondrewd) makes it to be.
its actually much worse than that. go read the comic. its a lolicon hentai pretending to be something else to try and get that fat outside-of-japan money. the comic dosent even try to hide it, with multiple graphic depictions of animals and adults raping children. dude whos responsible for this stuff is a sick fuck.
Kinda reminds me of Secret of Nimh... what happened to awesome shows that show some of the darkness that life can very much possess? Lessons such as LIVING THINGS TEND TO DIE. I mean, this isn't 'child abuse' stuff. This is saying how it is, it's blatant reality, just like trans women are men and girls cannot magically turn into boys. People need to refuse to let lies leave their lips. Refuse to be a puppet of those who demand we live in a make-believe land. For the love of God, protect the children from those who wave the rainbow. I am bisexual and I am anti-LGBT. That 'movement' has been co-opted by child-obsessed groomers and narcissistic power-hungry trannies who are destroying women's rights, women-only spaces, and women's sports. I refuse to play this game anymore, and I will not allow them to control my words. I will speak NOTHING except my best perception of truth, and if that costs me my life then I am willing to pay that price. I'm a Canadian, unfortunately, and we aren't really a people with much reason left to live anymore. What's more worthy of martyrdom than freedom and truth?
This art style is screaming that this is a kids show. Guess what will parents say when they let to watch this to their kids. Then after a few episodes they wonder why their kids don't wanna go up the stairs. XD
Well..."Alice in Wonderland" really is not a children's book either. Both "Made in Abyss" and "Alice in Wonderland" are stories that challenge our assumptions as great tales often do.
Have you seen American McGee's adaptation of Alice? It's a series of games; the third installment sadly got canceled. The second game, Alice Madness Returns, recaps a bit of the first game, gives you Alice's backstory, and concludes said story nicely.
Alice in wonderland never was about being scary or dark and morbid. It was story about child facing results of wanting things to be organized as simple as child can understand due to her logic and rationality but at the the same time craving for irrational nonsense. It's about nonsense it's supposed to be fun, entertaining, weird and impossible to understand. Alice like most kids wants world around to work as chaos but because she's more comfortable with having to acknowledge reality she understands that world is not fair, sustainable or logic if it's pure chaos. It's almost like tale about growing up and facing nonsense it's fun and not that deep and dark
One of the things that really interests me is that there is a gigantic hole with no origin that's thousands of meters deep, and is literally cursed and has artifacts with strange powers, even to the point of ones that are capable of pausing time. like none of the characters are like "isn't that VERY strange?"
It's because that's their normal. Do you ever look up and find it weird that we have a moon? How there's a big glowing thing in the sky, far bigger than anything else when it feels like it? A better example: the internet. I'm younger than the internet, and I, as well as probably you, and anyone else reading this, take the internet for granted. People do sometimes think about how cool it is, but will we do that in a thousand years?
This is an anime that almost seems like it was MEANT to be a game. An open world exploration game where you need to upgrade your equipment to go deeper. The whole whistle system is a tier system, it would be a great indie passion project
This one would make a game with the difficulty of a soulsborne game, the mechanics of a monster hunter like title, and with the need for a really intricate world design, without mentioning the graphics. It would probably be game of the year, but I don't think an indie developer could have the resources to make it.
@@phantomblade-i6l I don't know if you are referring to a MMO or a Co-op game, but in case of the first, i believe it wouldn't work because it would ruin that "unknown and isolated in a dangerous place" feel of this world, it would feel less uncertain to survive, but on the other side, it would be *awesome* if it had something like a Co-op mode, something like maybe genshin impact with a "call to your world" type of stuff.
Made in abyss was never disguised as a kid show though, a lot of stuff, even in the first episode point towards it being pretty dark, it is just told in a way that makes you forget the horror because of the wonder that the world looks like.
@myffisunn2919 I think that's Bones' way of saying "it's disguised as this cute little show that'll make you think nothing bad will happen." Which after Higurashi and Promised Neverland I was giving this show the side eye and waited for the horror elements to emerge.
I found Made In Abyss hilariously uncomfortable to watch for the exact same reasons you did. However, the childishness of the art style really drives home the innocence of the main characters and the absolute sh-tshow they got themselves into when they suffer the consequences of their actions. Some scenes are so particularly brutal, like Riko bleeding from her eyes or Reg hesitating to cut off her arm. I'm not "too" uncomfortable with the nudity part, except when the school did it as "punishment" to the children. In which context is pretty important here. I have my theories as to why, but I won't linger on this point. (Because I overthink things and that one Discus thread that loomed on it burned it into my head.) The Title is pretty spot on. You go into this thinking it's going to be some fun adventuring anime? Nah, we got some Eldritch Horror-level stuff and the cutesy art style is the bait. When I first dove into this anime, I thought to myself, "Okay, so what's the catch?" I was not disappointed by the answer. Nothing with "Abyss" in the title is going to be cutesy and fun, regardless of the art style. It's like hearing about Madoka being a magical girl anime and being blindsided by the brutality.
Well, the whole cute child show baiting totally ruins the entire thing. I basically just hate all the characters, so despite the abyss being an interesting place, the show is horrible overall.
Made in Abyss is literally l*licon and gore so I'm not sure where this person got "kid's show" from. It was marketed as seinen, meaning the intended audience was always adult men. I will admit that I went into the manga with an interest in the gore and world building but had to nope out with the extremely blatant l*licon shit.
@@keeganbanse8625 He just seems really uninformed about something that he made a whole video on. You just have to glance at the Wikipedia page to know this anime was made for adults (seinen). i discovered this around the time this video was made and man was i hooked. The innocent character design and story leading into some of the most emotionally intense plots ive ever experienced in an anime.
The fact that people can’t tell this was obviously a bait and switch art style, trying to justify it being drawn the way it is by comparing it to family guy is wild, one way I know it’s a fake-out kids show is that my little sister started watching it on her own, we both knew about it but I didn’t know she did and I had to tell her to stop watching it because she thought it was for kids. Obviously the author did that on purpose to say otherwise is literally coping. It’s an adult show meant to be mistaken for a kids show to throw people off when they reached the effed up stuff.
I think y’all forgot to mention the weird moments where they keep talking about punishing the kids in the most sexual way which I found hella uncomfortable. The fact that every time reg is with Rico naked or the other bunny girl they tell us how he gets an erection. And so many other weird shit that happens to these kids. It’s a good story but it’s littered with a pedophiles weird fantasies.
*oh my GOD!* THIS IS IT!! THIS IS THE SHOW IVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR AFTER ALL THIS TIME! ACTUAL YEARS!!! i genuinely was at the point where i was beginning to believe i had just imagined it all but omg i’m so glad this appeared in my recommended because i can’t stop thinking about it recently. i actually came across it with my brother on amazon somehow and it was free so we watched the first episode then i guess we both forgot about it… i’m actually so happy now i can finally put this thought to rest :)
That feeling is so great. There's allot of memories I have of shows from my childhood that I can barely remember, I just have a few images of them flash in my head sometimes and i'm a little sad that I can't remember what the show was called. But it does make me happy when I come across it and suddenly more memories of the show come flashing back and finally remember what it was I was thinking about from it.
For me it was some Turkish show I used to watch as a kid that I couldn’t find it anywhere I search on the internet, it got to a point when I thought I was imagining it all along but knew it can’t as I remember so clearly some of the memorable episodes, literally exactly 9yrs later, I visited someone who I remember watching the show with as a kid, and they just simply told me the name which let me tell you I felt like my life was completed. years and years shower though after shower thought i finally found out the name 😂

made in abyss definitely was not advertised or disguised as a kids show. the first few episodes make that clear. even though the child torture scenes are uncomfortable to watch, it adds to the story. it's not there just for shock factor. if you can get past these scenes, it is a really good show - but only for adults. the plot and design is so unique and not like any other anime i've watched. probably one of my all-time faves.

Theres so much weird shit in this anime that could hav easily been left out (whats obsession with butt stuff involving kids?) and the series would still be just as emotionally devastating.
I think people forget what it's like to be 12. Carefree and exploratory. Or maybe kids, like you, these days are growing up differently. I wish people could watch shows like this and stop projecting their "real world" ideologies onto it. Shows like this are supposed to transport you nto a different place entirely. It's not real, but what if it was kind of a deal? Put yourself in their shows. Not, "oh man, I can't tell people I watched this show because the characters are kids and acting like kids." Immerse yourself into their world and stop thinking you know better. One reason why I love anime is because I can leave this stupid world and go to another. Luckily, western "ideals" haven't infiltrated the market like they have with everything else. Thank God people like you are too insignificant to matter in the real world.
This anime excels at getting you attached to basically every character you meet. There's a lot of wholesome moments in season 1 but then it takes a drastic dark turn after that. Overall i really loved this series and can't wait for more
Coming back to this video after the second season, yeah, it gets dark. So dark that at a point in the second season, I stopped being able to fathom the pain as I heard their screams.
@@Drin792 I think the reason why this anime is so controversial isn't just the dark and gory situations these kids are finding themselves in but rather the blatant lolicon the author is portraying themselves as
Made in Abyss is such a diamond for me because it finally scratch that itch: a cute, bubbly art style, very good animation demonstrating absolute brutality. The world building, the plot, the mysteries are just the most delicious icing on that cake too :3
One absolutely wild thing about the manga, incidentally, is that it's all one guy's work: Akihito Tsukushi has one part-time assistant who's an old high school friend, but otherwise this man writes and illustrates this manga entirely by himself, which is basically unheard of in the industry and part of why Web Comic Gamma lets him take months at a time between chapters. Thankfully, he seems to be taking pretty good care of himself, because it'd suck if he overworked himself and couldn't complete the story or worse…
i think the problem is not the character design but the context, it works really well to really expose the horrors of the abyss but there are definetly some weirdos in the production team
For sure. I couldnt even recommend this to anyone i know because its clearly perverted. Sucks because its a creative and intresting story but its like some perv is forcing his fetishes into it. What stood out to me is after the blond girl mentioned her age the show seem to take any chance they could get to show her naked or topless. It even shows her tied up with ropes naked at one point. When they got to that town in the abyss i remember she gets assualted by monsters and its gets very graphic with how they fondle her and there is no exuse for that kind of creepyness.
@sambankman-Zelensky And yet people _worship_ Berserk even though it has a bunch of superfluous rape scenes, but demonize Made in Abyss for some lolisho themes (or rather, they demonize the loli portion; they usually only get mad at the shota part when Reg is reacting to something, not when something happens to him).
@@BloodrealmX get mad at the entire thing. RAPE and showing a MINORS BODY are TWO COMPLETELY different things. Let’s not act like we can’t understand the difference. You can display rape tastefully and use it to add to your story. In what fucking world is seeing naked children every other episode a part of the plot??? Just say you’re a pedo and move on.
I feel like a big part of what makes Made in Abyss work is, especially in the arc covered by the second season, there really isn't a hard and fast line drawn between the cute elements and the grotesque ones. Because it is, among many other things, a story about the wonder and horror of experiencing the world through a child's eyes and growing older and realising more about the world that you live in and about yourself; the art style isn't bubbly and soft to be shocking, but because that's the vibe that the story it's telling requires. That's also why, anything else aside, most of the characters are children. That's the theme. That's the point. These are dreams and nightmares of childhood.
There's also the aspect of things not really sinking in until you experience them. We're told right off the bat about how deadly the Abyss is, but it doesn't even _begin_ to sink in until we see the Corpse Weepers for ourselves, and it doesn't really hit home until the encounter with the Orb Piercer exactly how real the consequences of this adventure can be. The art style really shows Riko's perspective, being happy and beautiful but able to become gruesomely real when called for briefly before bouncing back.
Thanks for making this video, without it I probably would have never seen Made in Abyss, It's really a great anime if you get over the jokes about Reg's private and the horrifying events.
Anime was never said to be kids cartoons xD that's always the very first misconception that people make lmfao. But yes this show was hyper gruesome and so lovable with feels and stuff. Did really well in the story telling, art, voice overs everything.
Seems like it's become a western assumption that cartoons are for kids - even though early cartoons classics like loony tunes weren't exclusively aimed at children either.
@@Teth47 I have met no one who thought that, even showed this to people who don't know anything about anime and they said what is that like a young teen cartoon, I didn't even show them any of the brutal stuff.
Made in Abyss is my #1 for world building. It's the one and the ONLY anime where I actively want to learn more about the world and discover new things about its environment.
This anime is easily one of myfavorite and I believe one of the best animes out there. It's a completely unique world with an original story, with beautiful art work and some truly amazing Characters. There's a lot dark parts of this show for sure, and I think that's what keeps me coming back and always waiting and look for next chapter to release. If anyone is seeing this anime for the first time, watch it. It will captivate you and you won't let go
5:03 there is BUT... it is very long and frustrating if you don't have anything else you want to do, prepare to grind and feel pain in many places of your body, emotionally and physicly (say hello to these butterflies and gravity)
it was somewhat terrible i must say. whole season just for this group, less about our group and the abyss itself. it was too abstract, weird and just overly pointless. had good moments but eh, nothing really stuck
Made in Abyss is definitely not a kid's show, nor is it meant to appear as one. It’s an anime suitable for ages 18 and up. While the art style may look childlike, it's intended for a mature audience. The title is misleading.
Lmao this isn't disguised as a kid's show. English-speaking nations (particularly Americans) just get it twisted because they haven't learned that cutesy does not automatically equal kid friendly. I've loved animation from a young age. Like all art, it comes in all styles and shapes, takes on all subjects...it isn't animation's fault that Hanna-barbera, Nick, and Disney caused people to stop exploring the entire medium. 😂
the video creater sounds like hes surprised an anime happens to be brutal. the one thing i learned from watching the likes of higurashi no naku koro ni, erased, etc. is that you can never underestimate anime based on the animation-style.
lol- completely agree with your sentiments about the ocean... The bird that mimics the cries of the people it kills to lure in more victims reminds me of cryptid horror stories.

On the idea of Rikka getting naked, I recall another video pointing out how she doesn't see her robot partner as human or male. He will get embarrassed and possibly turned on, but to Rikka he might as well be a toaster or a dog, nothing to be embarrassed in front of. I really should go back and finish this show. For me Made in Abyss is in the same line as Madoka- cute and little bit childlish style, but really dark and heavy plotline. Plus MiA has classical tale vibe- dark, violent and made to be a cautionary tale of some sort.
Madoka is not that bad. It just seems worse because it plays into the trope of its genre at First. It's a pg-13 show at the end of the day. MIA is very R rated however
The irony is, his previous work was the same concept but going up, but was unsuccessful. Made in Abyss actually followed in the same footsteps, and he was about to stop drawing it before the 4th layer arc blew up.
5:53 I thought you meant full nips and everything but it was anime censored and the context to the scene makes it make sense why she was shirtless. Not as bad as you made it seem. The full cheeks out though is a violation ;-;
This is one of the most underrated anime. Art, plot, pacing are all on point. It has suspense, it has creepiness, it has points of uplift, and points where I genuinely almost shed tears.
Not underrated at all. In fact it's considered one of the best animes of the 2010's when it came out. From a popularity perspective, it definitely is not on a lot of people radars. But it's also a very heavy show that may be too extreme for people.
Not gonna lie when he said he wished the violence would stay ramped up for season 2 I just thought to myself "buckle up buttercup cause it's gonna be a bumpy ride" lol 😂🥺 it's still definitely a good watch though 😁
Also if you like shows with this sort of bait and switch, "baby artstyle but dark story", try Ousama Ranking and Idaten deities in a peaceful generation
Higurashi (when they cry) is always the one I think of first. It's like an episode of all nice and cute then WTF... then it kinda starts over and gets weird again... and every time is worse than the last.
I remember watching it and I was FASCINATED by it. The imagery and accuracy of the show was jaw-dropping and unequalled. Most anime shows that I have seen don't have this potential in them but this one was hitting me hard and I would always wait for the next episode to come eagerly. It also scared me to death especially the scenes with the Mitty's transformation and riko getting HURT BAD by the beasts of the abyss. But overall of that this shoe was a 1000000/10 and I love it. Wonder when the season 3 will be coming!
After the anime, i went further and read the manga. There are some interesting things, but i can't say that i'm a big fan of what happens way down in the abyss. What i love the most about this manga is its originality. It even goes into what i would call "philosophical concepts", when it discusses the concept of value (in the manga).

"But cartoons are for kids!"
Sorry, just had to put it there.
True
It is a childrens book literally written for a child.
@@thomaszloi9444 No. Just use Google next time.
Yeah except one doesn't have naked minors in it.
I don't find that strange, it could just be a cave in in their eyes, or erosion
It's been there for more than a millennia, all the weirdness and confusion has turned into wanting to understand, research, and use it.
theres theory the place is actually attlantis .....and all megical items are actually advance device...🤔
It’s the 2000 year cycle
This is an anime that almost seems like it was MEANT to be a game. An open world exploration game where you need to upgrade your equipment to go deeper. The whole whistle system is a tier system, it would be a great indie passion project
This one would make a game with the difficulty of a soulsborne game, the mechanics of a monster hunter like title, and with the need for a really intricate world design, without mentioning the graphics. It would probably be game of the year, but I don't think an indie developer could have the resources to make it.
yeah could also probably be a multiplayer game too, so many possibilites

@myffisunn2919
I think that's Bones' way of saying "it's disguised as this cute little show that'll make you think nothing bad will happen."

Ur gay
Funny I live near mammoth cave. This looks awsome.... Anything cute and morbidly grotesque is always awsome.
guess you searched for somethin in the abyss that's about the abyss itself.
The art is the disguise lol.
(Because I overthink things and that one Discus thread that loomed on it burned it into my head.)
The Title is pretty spot on.

And because Ozen exists in it
@@timothycollins5496 and Bondrewd. There are a lot of awesome characters.

Yes, some scenes are straight up some disgusting fetish dreams from the makers.. especially in the later seasons

@@BloodrealmX The loli potion should be demonized, what are you crying about and comparing this to Berserk? Berserk deserves its praise. 🤷🏾♀️

The comedy in these reviews are amazing! =D
4:33 what are the Qu doing there
SOMEONE ELSE NOTICED!
Who... Said that this was a kids show from the beginning?
I mean holy hell, the first episode had the Goblin Slayer treatment!
Like godamn!
Uh.... If you mean "that" scene - Well, it acted as a great filter for weeding out the Twitter crybabies from watching it.
This show feels like one of those psa videos about children having fun exploring then suddenly dying gruesomely.
before a message pops up saying "watch out" or "60 trillion babie get buried in cow shit a day"
2:00 I just realized something: May each of these creatures be a Shadow? A former cave raider, a former human?
0:46 Cool, lvls!
Going deep in the earth. Hmmm. This reminds me of a game called Spiral Knights.
Made in Abyss was never disguised as a kids show, the title and premise should have clued in you right away.
0:01 10 minute salute for mitty, o7!!
After the anime, i went further and read the manga. There are some interesting things, but i can't say that i'm a big fan of what happens way down in the abyss. What i love the most about this manga is its originality. It even goes into what i would call "philosophical concepts", when it discusses the concept of value (in the manga).
Okay, can't wait anymore I'm gonna read the manga
It's super pedophilic.@@roronoa_kenshin
Pro: a Soulsbournelike story disguised as a children's adventure starring MegaMan
Con: the p@do brand you'll likely receive if they find out you watch this...
I always joke that people should just get Artorias's ring before heading on down
Wow, this looks like an extremely cute and wholesome show about a girl and a robot boy I'm gonna definitely check it out I hope nothing bad happe-
My mom...she handed it to me thinking it was a cute show..and of all the movies to hand to me she handed the one with bondrewd on it. So um.. I have some severe emotional damage.... I told her she messed up and the show was messed up
"THOSE ARE JUST MINOR CRITIQUES" YOU GOT ME IN STITCHES BRO
4:48 "the concept's something ive never seen". A dungeon anime?
Happy New Year's, also, I've heard of this!
Happy 2022 homie
@@nobones we getting to the future lol
Poisonous things are digested. Venomous Is injected. That shyt be kicking yall ass
this is the first vid i'm seeing of yours. i'mma definitely binge your content lol
Don't be hating on Konosuba - that chit funny AF. :D
Facts!!! Darkness
its not you usual isekai power harem anime. Takes talent to make something so funny with that plot
Exactly, found that shit so weird, vapid? Bro what? Konosuba is a gem, it's not trying to reinvent the wheel and that's fine. But being vapid is just fuckin strange tbh
@@TheeOK1 Konosuba is a parody. It has a useless goddess who destroys stuff everytime she actually manages to do something right. A wizard who is the pinacle of glass cannon/walking I-cast-fireball-meme. A degenerate paladin who can't hit anything. And a 'hero' who is just trying to survive while putting up with the fractally broken party he has managed to cobble together. And their characterization of treating each other like friends, bad habits and all, is just fun.
Agree 100%. I can't help thinking he didn't realize it isn't supposed to be taken seriously. The whole point of the series is mocking the Isekai genre, and it does so with hilarity and style.
You forgot the "punishment" the kids recieve from the orphanage or in the abyss, for example the first white whistle you come across and her little helper purple whistle
Marulk is a Blue Whistle, not a Moon Whistle.
@@BloodrealmX I didn't say moon whistle I said purple whistle, and if you looked back at the scene with Ozen the immovable and the blue haired girl (forgot if that is her name), the blue haired girl had a PURPLE whistle. Ozen gave blue whistles to Reg and his companion (forgot her name aswell)
@@Mixen1Actual Yes, the blue-haired maid is who I was talking about: his name is Marulk and he is a Blue Whistle, not a Moon Whistle (Moon Whistles are purple and are a rank above Blue Whistle and below Black Whistle).
"Reg's companion" is Riko.
@@BloodrealmX ohhh shit and OH SHIT THAT'S A DUDE?!?!
@@Mixen1Actual Yeah, it's not directly stated in the series, but the dialogue and gags don't line up unless he is, and apparently Tsukushi has confirmed that Marulk is a boy when asked before (the admin of the Made in Abyss wiki states in the article comments that it was during a stream that didn't get archived, so the wiki will only list "Male (implied)" since in actually citable sources it's only implied).
I really love shows or movies that establishes the rules of their world early on, and characters must abide to the rules or else suffer dire consequences.
My favorite anime of all time. Its just something else.
5:42 i was planning on watching this anime till i saw this part of the video..
i'm only 18 seconds in 0:18 it hasn't even said it's Made in Abyss but i alr know it is i Lovee this anime especially How To Beat's videos on it
Mom: It's just a cute adventure show with kids. What's the worst that could happen?
*episodes later*
Mom: Oh... God! What the hell's happening to them?
You watch lolicon with your mom?
This show man, just wow. It takes a lot to give me a pit in my stomach watching something but this show did it, multiple times even. It's so well done.
