This was great and I need to read this book. It's so amazing that Sutton was able to work through stuff and ultimately accept her mother. I was never really able to do that with my own mother before she died and I'm regretful of that sometimes, but I am still working on it for myself even though she's gone

I know, I hopefully will see Sutton's new show before moving back to the West Coast. Crocheting requires some concentration. Good for anxiety and you can create something useful for others. Yarn keeps people warm. That makes me feel like sharing a hug.

What a brilliant topic! Those who didn't have a tough relationship with their mothers will never get it. It's more than the typical teenage spats that happen. People seem to think it's disrespectful to be critical of a parent who did not fulfil their duties adequately. I disagree. My mother also had undiagnosed and untreated mental illness. They come from a generation where you "toughen up and get on with it". I'm 27, and to see my mother get treatment for her issues now makes me incredibly happy but also feel a deep sadness that she didn't address it earlier for our sake as her children growing up.

This is all so accurate. Especially with mental Illness, I was fortunate that my mother was diagnosed and treated for her mental illness and other then the occasional ultra moment of stress it didn't have a huge effect on me as a child. But as I got older I became more and more aware of the strained relationship my mother had with her mother and the very real and complex issues there. It pains me that my mum's insistance on doing right by my brother and I was learnt from the experiences she had with her own (undiagnosed, untreated) mother, but I admire that she had the strength to break the cycle.
