The big mistake I've made in the past is not extending the roof over the entrance to prevent water entry through the entrance. That and digging a drain around the foundation running downslope to prevent the "swimming pool" effect! With these adaptations dugouts are superior for warmth! Building a dug out on a flat location is 100% assured to flood given a few seasons unless you are building in a desert! 95% of dugouts succumb to flooding because of poor site selection and these other two preventive measures. Very sad considering the amount of effort that goes into building some of these structures. Ask me how I know! One other suggestion is pack in a real d handle shovel and save time and your back. . .you will be old some day and thank me! FANTASTIC BUILD!

This is a survival shelter!!! This is not a house!!! Usually people survive for no more than a few days. The lower edge of the roof has a bend that is designed to hold leaves on the roof. Watch the video carefully and then open the drawers
