This tune is a defo northern soul anthem up there with the biggies fantastic song Love Frankie Beverley and Maze track Joy and pain keep the faith always ❤
I just saw Frankie Beverly and Maze this summer for the first time. My wife's favorite. I asked what all the fuss was about but the band playing live was amazing. Then I discovered Northern Soul and this gem. I can't believe how great this song is and don't understand why it never made it big over here (USA).
Simon price my friend it’s all in your brain : but remember Frankie and Maze coming into Berlin in Manchester after their gig and a few people talking to him about this very song ! Ktf
Another great Soul gem. Soul was the dominant genre worldwide throughout the 1960’s and into early 1970’s. So many hidden gems out there still waiting to be found.
42 dislikes above as I write this? That absolutely defies logic. This single is a definitive classic of the genre. A masterpiece! Frankie Beverly's output from that time (including his releases on Fairmount) are among the best records he ever did.
OMG! I commented here years ago without realising it was the same Frankie Beverley who made 2 of my favourite hits of the 70s and 80s in different dance music genres that I followed religiously. Never too old to learn some new truths even if it knocks you for 6 😂 1. Frankie B and the Butlers “That’s what you wanted” (1967) Northern Soul 2. Frankie B and Maze “Joy and Pain” (1981) Soul/Funk The man is an amazin and gifted old chameleon, and a born survivor.
I dont know what drives me to want to comment everytime I hear a great NS tune, I dont care if I gushed umpteen times before, this song is among the best in the NS archive.
I never forget the night I first heard this at VaVas in Bolton. Richard Searling played this and Frankie and the Classicals. Johnny Howard. Etc Etc..Just one great record after another. What a DJ. and only a teenager I think.
Had this on label called sassy (demo) sold it ! what a mug I was because this is the best soul recording of all time great lyrics pure dancer and rare I cannot think of a better sound FACT ⭐️
This track IS northern soul for me! Up in top with Billy Butler - The right track, Jackie Day - Before it's too late, Roy Hamilton - Cracking up over you, etc, etc ....... Quality music just keeps proving itself every time. K T F .
Scrolling through Global Dog Productions list of Gamble Records 45 discography brought me here and I'm glad I brought my ears to some good late-60s soul; I was originally checking to see if there were any O'Jays singles under this label between 1966 to 1971 only to find that there wasn't.
A classic bootleg pressing! Some of us couldn't afford the vast sums needed to purchase these fine tunes. So thanks Bootlegers! Other tunes released on this 'Lable' includes: Serving A Sentence Of Life (Carl (Kung Fu) Douglas and Lynn Randel 'Stranger In My Arms'! KTF!
Soulmantodd that's satisfactory to my life in the 70's cutting all these in onestops n plants on my trips around America finding the Originals ! ua-cam.com/video/Y5Oomcr2Pic/v-deo.html
one of the BADEST 6T's SOUL trax of all time.DEFFO in my top 5,& alot of other peps! Never,Never get sick of it! it was bad for Frankie Beverly that it wasnt a hit back in the 6T's,but good for the track,as its got a pure underground sound to it..!+shirley he must've got royalties when inferno realeased it 35+years ago,&its been on countless compilations, yada yada
The reason several OOTP bootlegs are so "rare" is probably that Selectadisc were prosecuted for bootlegging c.1974 - though why anyone in their right mind would pay over the odds for a nasty dubbed-from-vinyl bootleg is way beyond me...
This is the dog's private's what a banging soul sound I purchased one from Rob Smith's & Johnathan woodliffe hurts yard record shop Nottingham circ 78/ 79 my favourite period in life take care soul brother's & sister's 💜💯✊✊✊✊🏻

I've moved on decades since this , but , it still loops round my brain - sheer Colin Curtis class
We've all moved on my friend, but soul has a drawing power which pulls us back to the beginning dont you find...

Another great Soul gem. Soul was the dominant genre worldwide throughout the 1960’s and into early 1970’s. So many hidden gems out there still waiting to be found.

The Maze frontman Mr. Beverly himself at his best Northern Soul era.
