I'm in the market for a chipper and have spent ages looking at all the different machines. They are all the same except some have neat ideas for clearing blockages. In the end made in America and parts are available leads me towards the DR chipper. The patriot however has direct drive and no need for a clutch or belt also made in America. Thanks for your Video Beaver.

I have a DR chipper/shredder. It's the smallest model they make. The thing shakes so much when chipping large branches (more than 2.5" in diameter) in the chipper, it almost feels like the machine would shake itself apart. It's made with very thin gauge sheet metal, good for reducing the weight and perhaps cost, but the light weight contributes to the shaking.

Wait till that thing starts and kicks back with no clutch. You're looking at a sprain. I ended up putting the clutch back on.
Almost impossible to start when you're trying to rotate the flywheel and another 20 lbs of shredder hammers.
    I'm lucky I didn't break my thumb.
C'mon DR! gotta be a better fix.

Amen!! It takes a 300lb linebacker to start it without the clutch. I'm putting mine back in!

Wonder if anyone explored who made the clutch - and if there are other replacements from same or other manufacturers.

Seems the engine is to power full for the belt to handle it. Saw another Video. Using the same chipper engine set up. He said he had destroyed two belts.

If the way DR fixes this problem with a defective clutch is to do away with the drive clutch, DR is cheaping out. The proper way to address this problem should have been to send their customers a functional and reliable drive clutch. By converting the drive clutch into a direct-drive pulley, DR is saving a lot money (drive clutches are expensive) and taking away from the users the convenience of a clutched start. Now, users have to turn the heavy rotor every time they start the engine. Not cool.
