I've read quite a few studies that said a juvenile, 17 years old or younger, re-committing sexual abuse as an adult is very low (somewhere around 9%). It doesn't excuse Josh's molestation on his sisters and the other girl; I just want to share it doesn't mean he is a sex offender as an adult.

I never saw Michelle doing any housework on the show. I saw the girls in the family doing all the work and taking care of the younger children All I saw Michelle doing was holding the newest baby until it was time to get get pregnant again. Then that child was passed off to older girls and I never saw Michelle interact with the toodler again

Wow, Jinger was pretty intense there at the end about being a terrible sinner at 14. She was probably having harmless, totally normal dreams about boys she had a crush on and yet was made to feel like she was committing the gravest of sins. @@kirchb Speaking from experience, you are right. I was very religious and spiritual in my teens, but struggling with my sexuality at the same time. As much as I enjoy the faith, I was also struggling with my sexuality. And that can really put you in a deep dark conflicting place.

It's been a long process. You are good. You don't have to watch 19 Kids to feel better. You take care. If you seek help, that shows you are strong. And there is no shame on it. If you read the police report, Joshua was 14 or 15 when he molested his sisters when they slept. This abuse included a five year old girl. He tried to touch one girl in the laundry room and she freaked out. His parents' response was not to get him psychological help but to send him away to some kind of work/prayer camp--it might have been a friend's business. Anyway, no one got help for Joshua's abuse, not his sisters and not Joshua.

Once in a while I still have to myself that a thought I have is not correct or not healthy and I left church more than 30 yrs ago. I know that I am not someone's puppet and am responsible for what I do and say. At Jana's age I am sure she has already had that moment of clarity - but she chooses to ignore it. Because obviously she feels to stay under their roof,, and under their thumb, benefits her more than harms her. It's a common phrase used by Christians when a kid stops just taking their parents word for it that God is real, and they start to believe it through their own experiences and studying. It basically means, I'm going to believe in God, not because you said I should, but because I have found it for myself to be true.

This family always fascinated me, because I knew there had to be more than anyone was talking!
It is not normal to not allow kids to not have friends outside of their siblings.
i think the way josh acted as a teenager (and still continues to act today) is partially, if not completely, due to the way he was raised. parents like that are TERRIBLE to their children if they don’t believe EXACTLY what they believe. they have no room for freedom or expression. when josh got older and had freedom, he went crazy and went to porn to feel like a bad boy while still trying to look okay on the outside for his parents. his porn led to him cheating on his wife.

Joey Short furthermore, I don’t think religious teachings can really give everyone (some, not all) a strong moral character. Teaching children that “you don’t hurt others because you should consider how they feel, and the harm you can cause them” is vastly different from saying “don’t steal cause Jesus says so”.
Seriously, look up the Quiverfull movement. It's a religious cult mentality that encourages abuse, both mental and physical that discourages questioning of parents and instills fear at a very young age. The level of abuse endured depends on the family as does the emphasis on education. Most hardcore followers don't view a woman's education very important when it coms to high school or college. Any mingling done outside the cult mindset should be avoided, but if not, carefully monitored. This is all classic brainwashing.

I am a Christian. I attend an old Roman Catholic Church. Being born out of wedlock is not a sin! In fact there is nowhere in the Bible that says that you have to be legally married to have a child. If you think about it back in the days of Jesus Christ there was no marriage license office to attend. Back in the days of the Bible people devoted themselves to each other. So marriage is more of a spiritual ceremony. Having a marriage license is a part of our government! So having a child out of wedlock is not a sin.

Growing up, my family always looked up to them. I had four siblings, but other than the family difference (and they never stopped trying to have kids bc they were quiverful), and the fact that we could wear pants, we weren't different.

7:04 I related to this so hard. My sister & I are 8 years apart. We fought *constantly* as kids, we couldn’t even be in the same room without a fist fight breaking out at one point in our childhood. But when we got older we got super close. I was there with her when she gave birth to 3 out of 4 of her children & she was there to help me give birth to my daughter. We’re attached at the hip now.

This is so sad in so many ways. One thing I have learned is that ... just because people believe in God does not mean they are perfect (very stupid to act like they are perfect and above "sin"). We all have done things we feel shame for... common humanity. Being open about these kinds of things can support people getting the help they need. Both the abusers and the abused. Boundaries, acceptance, love and consequences are need.

To be fair, it seems that Jinger’s “bad deeds” is really just a reference to the depravity of man.
