    Thank you so much for posting this. I am a new turnner and have been struggling with the finishes. Your video allowed mew to turn and finish a pen this morning. The finish was BEAUTIFUL!!!! I am gaining confidence now.

    I learned so much from this video! When you said "If you don't sand the entire blank flat, if there's any shiny spots that you miss, you'll end up with white dots on your blank" Or something similar to that. I said out loud OOOOOOOOOOOH!!! Cuz I've done that and had no idea why! Thanks :-)

    Great video. I turned and finished a pen tonight using your first CA method then used the white diamond on my buffer and got the best finish I've ever had. I am now going to your website to see what I need as a payback to your time making the video,

    I have turned about 400 pens so far, and I find this video to be very helpful. It's down to earth and makes sense. I recently purchased the CA glue finish kit and am anxious to try it. I have used CA glue in the past and with great results. I think woodnwhimsies has a great future and I wish you well. Still haven't learned to master the skew but will keep on trying. Thanks again

    Great video and very informative for newcomers and all people with turning experience already and there is always something to learn from another persons perspective .
    For anyone to read: I think the bumps people might be referring to is when trying to master the skew chisel is the dreaded chatter that anyone trying master the use of a skew chisel will have had at some point while turning,it mostly boils down to the angle the chisel is held and the bevel the grinder leaves on the chisel and the position of the bevel on the timber when turning with a Skew chisel i have seen many different variations of the same chisel - meaning how it's ground short bevel or a long bevel and there seems to be a lot of self taught people having a go or learning from youtube videos,hands on practice is the best teacher once you know the basics keep trying all different angels and positions improve on what you see improvise until you find what works for you,of course common sense and safety are a must when using any powered equipment and tools,Patience and Practice like all things in life.Happy turning. Goodluck

    Just wanted to say thanks for the video, I did a pen yesterday and used a CA finished for the first time yesterday and I think I had the lathe set a little too fast while finishing because I got sort of frosting tips popping up, but no worries just took extra time sanding down and then polished with the micro mesh (I use it for acrylic blanks) and it looks amazing over spalted Tamarind wood! Thanks again for sharing your knowledge!!

    Well, an update from this old guy. I tried the CA finish and I'm hooked. The end result is, it looks like glass and is very durable, even when dropped onto the lathe where it bounced onto the concrete floor :) . The skew is still a work in progress, but getting better each day. I have completed three of the inlay pens and just received five more. I got the dead center and put it to use. Yup, it works as advertised.

    Interesting about the skew. I've had a lot of trouble with it, but just recently succeeded in getting a really smooth finish on laminated oak. Oak is a real pain to turn without tear-out. The skew has been my saving grace with it.

    Thanks for a great vid. I have been turning pens for a while. Self taught mostly from youtube. I was going through a tedious wet sanding process so I tried following your first method to the letter. I got a better finish with a nice luster using your method. Two mistakes I was making. One was too much speed, the other was going from the last coat of CA straight to the micro mesh. Your method is quicker and cleaner. Thanks.

    Awesome video. Really like how you explain everything. I tried CA glue finish last night and kept getting a white cloudy finish, only in some spots. Other parts we're very clear and glass like, what might be causing this?

    Hi there, awesome video, thank you. I am from South Africa where in the USA can I order your buffing "wheels" from?

    • @davesanders7893
      @davesanders7893 5 років тому

      The name of the buffing system is the Beall buffing system the link at the end of this message should take you straight to it, if you have a problem with it just use www.bealltool.com. also you should be able to find it at a store called Woodcraft and their website is www.woodcraft.com www.bealltool.com/products/buffing/buffer.php

    While using the buffing wheels, you showed us the Jet 10-14. What was the piece of machinery between the two lathes. It had 3 dark wheels above a motor. Is this a piece of hand build machinery?

    I tried all three methods and found that number three was the fastest and easiest. However, a couple of days after I finished the pen I noticed the CA finish was developing small cracks not only on the ends, but also in the middle. I wonder what is happening and what I can do to prevent this from happening.

      yes, it doesn't have to be that brand, any CA glue will work, KMS sells their own brand that works well.

    What sort of grit corresponds with, say, 12000 grit micromesh when using sandpaper?

    • @marneysmithies8558
      @marneysmithies8558 8 років тому

      sandpaper as far as I know only goes up to 2500, well what I can buy in the automotive section, please correct me if I am wrong y'all, so that is why you go to micromesh (sandpaper).

    When I use accelerator the glue turns white. What causes that?

    • @WigglesNation
      @WigglesNation 9 років тому +2

      +John Creasey it's ghosting, basically there are a few things that cause that, why you spray too much accelerate, or are too close with it. I personally do 2 quick bursts left then right about 8 or 9 inches away.

    You can turn toilet paper with a skew if you could figure out how to get it on a brass tube.

    Wonder what would happen if you ran into a bullet while turning. What do you think would happen? I think it might fly out. Wonder what it would do to your chisel. Lead is softer than tool steel.

    quite agree with Michael Knowlden that the micromesh is designed to be used as a wet sanding system. I have just bought a stet and used it to finish my first CA pen and used as it is supposed to be, the finish is phenominal. after finishing with the 12000 grit wet it was better than your finished blank, AND to make it better I finished it off with a German Automotive polish called MER and boy does that bring up a shine. WET ,WET WET SAND !!!

    I've tried CA a few times and the fumes from it is enough to make me not use it anymore. There are many other options that CA shouldn't be used at all, once it gets hot the fumes get pretty nasty and I'm sure they are toxic.

    Some gross incorrect data being told in this video. If your CA is doing all the nasty stuff mentioned at the start then you are using the WRONG type of CA.
