Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is an action role playing game developed by Team Ninja. You play as a nameless solider who must fight against monsters and demons in a dark alternate version of the Three Kingdoms period.
Gameplay consist of closed range attacks where players can deflect enemy attacks, use spirit attacks after filling their spirit gauge or call upon one of five “Divine Beasts” to help aid in combat.

The 2 worst things about this game are multiple enemies spamming red attacks at the same time and getting hit with a red attack from off screen
There’s also one level where the ground is poison and it drains all your meter so you pretty much can’t miss one single parry or else you instantly get stunned. Complete BS!
It's called a deflect, the entire combat system is based around it

Soulslike/SoulsBourne what the heck are people supposed to refer to it as? Its clearly in the vein of From Software's game template. Its not a traditional hack-and-slash like DMC, OG God of War, or Ninja Gaiden.

9:30 "Why can't I just equip armor" More defense, slower movement. A classic gameplay tradeoff. Without tradeoffs, there's actually no point to armour because there's one optimal choice, so you may as well just have aa stat that increases over time (lazy game design).
It's just annoying. That's why I always preferred the Ninja Gaiden games. There's no armor or anything to equip other than a weapon. I feel like equipment armor is just another stat I had to worry about to keep me from beating the game too quickly.
I was hoping this game would be more like Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry or Bayonetta but of course it's a souls-like because why wouldn't it be.
I know, I was really hoping for a ninja gaiden game too. Well, I guess I'll always have Ninja Gaiden 2 on series x😊

It's a "Souls like game" except without Team Ninja these games won't exist. Now.. don't salt, people of from software' toxic community.
The combat is pretty accurate with what a real life combat would be like; you can't expect a particular opponent to attack you; combat is chaotic 70% of the time. The game forces you to play without lock on sometimes because that's the way it should be. Love the bow, btw ❤
I tried playing a few different fromsoftware games a few years ago and they just werent for me, i thought the combat just felt way too sluggish and slow, i prefer more fast paced action RPGs, i thought this was just how souls style games worked but then i played wo long and holy cow, the combat is amazing, so fluid and smooth compared to elden ring, ive always made the mistake of just buying popular games because i just assumed that popular games were good and unpopular games were bad, but thats definitely not the case, gaming is subjective, everyone has different tastes, the combat and progression in wo long just feel right to me, it feels so natural to play
The bosses are really fun but the enemies not so much

I know you asked Andrew but I'll give you some recommendations.
1. Uncharted Trilogy is a must
2. Prince of Persia forgotten sand is a very underrated 7th gen game
3. Metal gear solid 4 Is essential especially if you love the metal gear franchise.
4. Red dead redemption is still a solid game
5. Batman Arkham franchise is peak batman story at it's best
6. Resistance trilogy is a good fps series exclusive to ps3
7. God of wars are pretty good too if you are into hack n slash games.
8. Dishonored gives you alot of freedom in how to approach your objectives.
9. Resident evil games are some of the best I've ever played.
10. Sly cooper collection and thieves in time, four games with amazing OST, characters, gameplay and open hubs to explore.

There's actual the original Demon's Souls game on ps3 if you're interested. It was remade on the PS5 recently. It might not look as good but the gameplay is still there👍
There's also Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. Which are not souls game but more action oriented.

I do like soul games but for me nothing quite scratches that itch for flashy action atm. And the ones that do aren't on sale ATM ༎ຶ‿༎ຶ. After DMC and ninja garden etc. Nothing really scratched that arcade like high action combo hell itch.

my biggest issue with this game is its simplification, which is probably something they wanted to make a game that can become more popular than the Nioh series, but even when I had a lot of fun in the first run of the game and a little bit of co-op and ng+ afterwards, I got bored of it mid way into ng+ exactly because of the simplification, once you master the deflect timing and know the enemies' patterns there is little room for creativity from player's side, which is something Nioh did much better
also, in terms of story, ghost of tsushima isn't any better than this in terms of story, the Yakuza games have great stories, but ghost of tsushima's is exactly as generic as Wo Long's, it's only told in a more western friendly style, but ti's nothing special either

Yakuza games have, in my opinion, the best stories in any game. The scripts can put Hollywood to shame.

The two demo levels were way too corridor-like, tho the bosses are the stars of the show. Overall it was fun and hopefully later zones are more DS3-like and less DS2-like

Awesome game so far I'm enjoying it, I love how it's not to difficult compared to a game like Bloodborne or demon souls, when you die from a boss you don't end up miles aways from your last spot like souls games, so you not wasting time & advance the story quicker which I think is more immersive instead of dying literally thousands of times for hours in the same damn location

Honestly I got this game confused with wukong. When I saw footage of wo long I was like hey, this isn’t black myth wukong 🤣yeah I’m waiting for that game too. Now THAT game looks next-gen to me.

yeah, the blocking is definitely a lot more forgiving. If you like souls games I'd recommend Lies of P. The parry system is a little tighter I have to say but the story a lot more intriguing👍🏻

I just beat the third boss (giant pig with tusks), and I gotta say that this game feels like a watered down version of Nioh, combat wise at least
Honestly they should’ve just made another ninja gaiden. But I guess what they wanted was a more user friendly version of Nioh🤷🏻♂️
It's so weird, i was hyped for the game. Played the demo on ps4 and was so underwhelmed by the combat system, graphics and overall atmosphere. It made me deinstall the demo and play code vein, wich, as crappy as it is, felt actually kinda better. Still waiting for the eldenring dlc though, Fromsoft luckily always delivers.

@@everilliem3292 yeah about that "fact", you sure that's not just your own opinion or can you prove that in any rational way? I mean it's no Dark Souls but in my opinion it was awesome to play to NG+++. So no sir, it is no hot garbage to me.
I love sekiro, but I never really liked playing the nioh games. The game does feel fun from the sekiro side of being a deflect based game, but my biggest issue is the timing, sekiro seemed to do it the best, this feels about 1/4th of a second too narrow. If they increased the window nust slightly, I'd be able to deflect 30% more attacks. I know that's the design, I just don't like it.
It’s been a while since I last played Sekiro so I don’t really remember what the parry was like. I do agree with the timing in wo long being too narrow. It’s pretty tight at times. The only thing that makes it manageable is that some moves glow red giving you a heads up to parry. Some of the other moves are harder to read.
@SuperJumpReviews it's really similar, almost exactly the same, but sekiro has a wider parry window. Not much wider but enough to notice a difference. The stagger bar also regens slower the lower the enemies health is, but I haven't seen that in wo long, at least not yet.
Different weapons have differing parry window sizes.
@artistunknownxx that could be it, I normally stick with swords, I just beat the 3rd battlefield about 10 minutes ago. It's not bad. I just don't know if it's for me.

Nah, I preordered one a while back and was put on a waiting list. Finally got a notification to buy one but had changed my mind at the time. haha. I think I'm done with playing on a handheld.

Reinforcements are shits, having to aid them takes like 5secs and then the enemy can still attack and kill you 😒
Well you don’t have to aid them. Just let them fight with you in the beginning and let them fend for themselves 😂
I wish I had seen your review before buying this game. People keep comparing the combat with Sekiro but I felt it more frustrating rather than enjoying it. For monster boss battle I don’t even know what’s hitting me. Waste of money for me.

I've always got an issue with any game which prioritizes parrying over attacking aggressively. It just removes a certain amount of choice and creativity away from the player, not to mention it's a dumb fighting philosophy to wait for your opponent to hit first.
I actually agree with you. That's why I prefer games like Ninja Gaiden over this.
In this case that's not true, your basic attack can stun lock your opponent unlike Elden ring and bloodborne

I disagree, your definitely rewarded for a balance of offense and defense, this is one of the easiest soulslikes if you know how to take advantage of the combat and progression systems, between deflecting, building up your spirit meter, using your spirit attacks, martial arts and spells you can definitely cheese every boss in the game easily, including all the dlc I've put over 120 hours in this game and I'm still progressing my builds and crafting new builds, I think when it comes to build crafting and variety team ninja just does a better job than fromsoftware, this is why I prefer random loot over tradional equipment, because even with two of the same weapons they will never be the same, you can have two completely different builds with the exact same loot because of random stats, perks and martial arts

Yeah idk why people keep doing it. I am a white guy so don't take my word for it, but it feels insensitive to use japanese as a non-japanese speaker for a chinese game just because of the Asian characters and setting.

This game is easy. If you’ve ever played Nioh 2 or sekiro you should know how the counter works and deflect works. If you haven’t played neither than it’s gonna be hard for you. Nioh 2 is harder than this game. But game is fun

I played the demo for few minutes and uninstalled it! The moment I found it's just another pain in the ass title with it's own gimmick! I just find the very restrictive on how you can play them, at least for the average Joe! Isn't camera one of the reasons this genre of games is so difficult (constantly readjusting it).
Hopefully Team Ninja give us a new Ninja Gaiden soon!

Ok late to this review, as much as I love nioh 2 and sekiro this game definitely enjoyable but my biggest gripe is the re-use enemies being the worst lol. And yeah team ninja were never good at stories I always skip it but all I can say is that Lu bu was a baddest defi my fav boss fight. Probably 7/10 at best also fuck aoye 😂 janky ass boss
I like Team Ninja back during the Xbox 360 days.
Plot is interesting, enemies are not interesting, don’t like jumping 20 feet in the air nor running as fast as a cheetah. I just wish your character was more human rather than a demigod

Update: Everyone please play the game again. Theres fun DLC and New game plus 3 so you'll get a much harder challenge.

I hate the soulslike genre
This game is a breeze compared to any fromsoft game its definitely a fun and accessible title to try to get into souls titles ... as long as your not on pc it runs great

@@SuperJumpReviews Nothing. On my PC it runs 4k on full graphics on with sky-high fps. Also keyboard and mouse is better than controller by far (camera control). Chris must have a bad rig.

Depends how much you spent on that pc...not all pc's are better. Many games aren't optimized for pc as well and that's a shame. Yes a top end pc are better than console but for the price console is worth it....also why does it even matter? If you like pc then play it....do you buddy.

I've given it 10 hours and I honestly just don't enjoy it. The Morale system is just stupid to me. Having to progress through half a level to even use your spells. It's just dumb on many levels. Want to create build that's elemental and spell based? There's literally no point. The fact the elemental weapon buffs are 7 morale is just insane.
The combat can't even save it either. It wants to be Sekiro with its parry mechanics, but it doesn't even reward you for being succesful with it (later enemies don't even have half their stamina meter reduce with a successful crit blow parry) and its punishment for failing is absurd, as not only do you lose your own spirit bar, the enemy gains their spirit bar. It's just annoying and needed to be simplified.
I actually agree with all the points you made. You really hit the nail on the head about having to progress through half a level to use your spells. That's complete BS. This game is vastly inferior to the Nioh games as far as combat mechanics go. It is closer to Sekiro (bad) and it is sad to see a studio regressing instead of progressing. I had close to 3k hours in Nioh2; I uninstalled this in 20 minutes. Don't bother people.
I honestly think they should’ve made a ninja gaiden game instead. Keep the parry system but make the gameplay more like ninja gaiden 2.
