Yeah, it really made an impression on me as a kid how Genesis looked like regular people. Every other band on MTV had big hair and leather pants, but Genesis looked refreshingly normal yet they made this really excellent music.
I totally agree with you Dawn. Phill Colins & Genesis, absolutely amazing!! I really liked this song & many others they sang.
Double totally agree! They looked like the older brothers of the kids in high school which was when I discovered them. Also, they seemed to be enjoying themselves while playing (or making a video of) their songs, without the pouting, posturing, and overly-affected seriousness. Phil's voice is so strikingly distinctive, along with the layered music that made me an instant fan.
Well, by this time they were in their 30s, so all the crazy clothes and long hair were long gone. Especially if you look at pictures of their previous singer around 1972-1973 :)
Indeed.
Peter Gabriel put Bowie, Elton and Freddie to shame with his getups in the mid 70's. Lamb Tour.
This song gets ZERO credit for what it is: It's fucking AMAZING on so many levels. The thing that jumps out is the incredible rythym section. The drumming and bass are utterly amazing. Unless you are a musician, no one can truly make you understand just how hard it is to play drums and sing at the same time. And Mike's bass lines are so FLUID and flawless. Geddy Lee is knodding with approval...trust me.
I was thinking that through the whole song!!! How he is playing 🥁 and singing at the same time. He has always been amazing to me.😘😘🥁🥁💜💜
@@joyceanderson3165 well he's not singing and playing at the same time. lol. That's simply something that's not done in the studio. The drums are recorded first and the vocals are usually overdubbed as the very last thing. this is just a music video where they can lip-synch or do anything they like.

@@donutcookiepie - I disagree. To even lip-sync while drumming isn't the easiest thing to do.
@@joyceanderson3165 i love this song.
Nobody talks about the damn fine bass line Mike is laying down.
Brian Jones he’s really good on the bass!
Props to his bass line!
Bass guitar yeah
Indeed. The head Mechanic is killin' it here.
I do Mike Rutherford played with Mike and the Mechanics. With several hit songs
Just now realizing how great the bass was on this gem.
1972CB350 I believe mike Rutherford said he considered himself a better bassist than guitarist
Bass, drums, horns, keyboard and vocal.
Getting a job at home and a4a4i44a4aia999444 can i do something that you want me LOL so I'm gunna firihaaharr oeftixrsfxfuedjlu duuufrgr@@coronaweeks4577 to you
Yessss
EVERYTHING was great on this gem!!!!
I don’t care how old Phil is now. He still melts my heart.
One of their most underrated songs! The horn section from earth wind and fire or EWF, actually played the horns in this song. Great song! Long live Genesis!
They were known as the Phoenix Horns.
I agree very underrated but not sure of the year on this but early 80s n I like most all his hits n this was one.❤🥰
Phenix Horns
Was it Phoenix Horns on this? I had it as the Squib Cakes in my head but I’m not a horn section aficionado. I just love playing this bassline.
@@Terrible_Peril Phenix Horns, yes.
Rutherford is just killing it on the base.
The older I get, the fresher this song is.❤
The hard it is to hear
I was just thinking the same thing.
this song is just a pure concoction of why genesis is so great. it's got elements of prog rock but also pop, R&B, and funk. everything is on point.
Exactly 💯
This song just shimmers... Tony's liquid keyboards, Mike's funky bass, the punchy horns, and Phil's precise vocals and drumming. Love it
Apparently the horn section in the song is the same horn section for Earth Wind and Fire.
Great comment … “shimmers” is the perfect word for this song!
@@therealaustinpowers1967yeah, Phenix Horns
OMG! I've seen this video 1,000's of time and NEVER realized who were playing the HORNS! IM STUPID!!
And Phil artfully handling vocals and drums…LEGEND.
This album is criminally dismissed by old school fans and underappreciated by everyone else. It's such a unique blend of styles and sounds. They only made one ABACAB, and it could have only been made at that moment.
Duke is my favorite Genesis album. But Abacab is a banger, no doubt about that.
@@shamwowser6449 Heard! Duchess alone. GASP
ABACAB and duke are tied in my books. If you listen to ABACAB and then follow the directions and put another record on there music starts to change.
Totally agree. It has some of the most daring and experimental work the band did ever since The Lamb.
@@jhillst Thank you
This song will never get old. A underrated musical gem!
It tugs at the heart. The upbeat tempo deafens very strong and sad emotions.
Is any body listening?
Rutherford is killing it on bass!
right, man!
Phil's voice and drumming skills are the absolute best!
One of my all time favorites. I call it “progressive soul” which is a genre with very few songwriters and musicians. Genesis were ahead of their time.
Mike is a fantastic bass player for sure!!
Mike never got a lot of opportunities to shine on Genesis' work, but holy mother, when he does, it's gold.
Can’t figure which is best? The horns? Mike laying down amazing riffs on bass? Or Phil belting it out while hammering the skins. An absolute timeless classic!
Mike wins this one.
Perfect!
Mike is EATING IT UP on the bass!!!!!!!!!!! My god!!!!
2:18 one of the finest Bridges ever written in a Pop song. EVER.
ABSOLUTELY!
YES!
You’re not lying.
you are right
Fun Fact:Earth,Wind and Fire's Phoenix Horns are playing in the background on this song Genesis was huge fans of Earth Wind and Fire so Maurice White and Philip Bailey lent them to Genesis
One of those songs that when it gets played in retail everyone perks up.
Anyone in 2024? Still amazing and on my playlist ❤
Collins is underrated jazz-influenzed drummer. His earlier Genesis playing in weird prog time-signatures is off the charts.
Check out Brand X, you’ll really like his drumming
He's a Brand X vet!😎
Still my favorite band !! The horns , the bass and the drums are the Best !! I'm going on 54 , still this song keeps me going ❤
I love how Phil brought some Motown/ 70’s R&B influence into their songs. Magnificent!!
I always loved Collins for his humor in his videos!
Absolutely............Phil ALONE,in this video,is just hilarious!!! :)
Peter Arriaga Always loved it when Phil looks at his watch! Too funny.
Yeah he can be pretty fun in his videos, where he plays multiple ppl but is all him..😂😂🤣💞🌹
It seems he and everybody connected with Genesis enjoyed what they were doing, Phil especially, and it really comes through in so many ways. Humor shows a keen mind.
@Peter Arriaga, I loved how goofy he was in the Easy Lover video with Philip Bailey!
Phil's expressions are just so freaking adorable!
phil's mine hhi :love
Lol 😆 check out his blue eyes and his smile good close up to a great 🎵
❤yes!!!! PC was the man!
I'm 14 and I love genesis
Jake Stimpson 10 years later, do you still love Genesis?
Wow....grown man now.
Damn you’re 25 now and 5 years away from 30! 😎😏
C'mon Jake. We need answers!
YES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How does this great song have under a million views. Someone should use this song in a movie or TV show.
It sticks in my head
Mike on trombone, Tony on trumpet, and Phil on Sax. Classic.
Proving once again how underrated the early 80's was for music.
One of my favorite Genesis hits.❤
One of mine also.
25 years later..I still know every word!! WHEN MUSIC WAS GREAT!! THANK YOU Genesis FOR MY WONDERFUL MUSICAL JOURNEY!
These guys were ahead of their time.
Phil Collins' hair has more talent than most of the famous artists today.
sigh.........Does anybody have that Time Machine READY YET?!?!?!?
I'm with you on that idea. The 80s was the best time to grow up in.
@@davidsauer5831 agreed
I was waiting on my shipment of crystals to arrive, but SOMEBODY gummed up the postal service....
you should come to our time travelers meeting, it was last thursday
I am breathless .. holding my breath to the genius of Phil Collins ❤😍
My all time favorite band. Still get goosebumps listening to Phil. How have you been Connie ?
I was living upstate New York when I first heard Genesis . That was 1978 . Still love Phil Collins and Genesis ❤️❤️❤️
Listening to this brings back the good old memories. How you have you been?
You still better have love for Billy.
Looks like the lads had a lot of fun making this video.
Phil Collins; one of about five greatest famous voices ❣️
I guess I was too young at the time to really appreciate Genesis. My older broshack and his friends were musicians and into 'musicians' bands like Genesis, Rush, etc. And he always used to rave about how phenomenally talented those bands were. Many years later, I get it. Now I can't get enough of them. You could set your watch to them.
You can tell Phil knows about them lady frustrations, I love the sensitivity on display in this song, love everything about this song!
Heard this song at the bar today. I was the only one jammin hard. One of my favorite songs ever. Phil I love you
Phil & his harmony on this is one is astronomical... and the guys are phenomenal, as usual. ✌😊
Phil is very underrated drummer his shuffle and timing is spot on
Geniuses at work
How incredible that the greatest prog band of the 70s just seamlessly transitioned into a band that could lay down an absolutely tenacious groove like this. No finer collection of musicians has ever been assembled.
Plus,, they never left their progressive rock roots. This album (Abacab) alone, also had Dodo, Me and Sarah Jane and Keep it Dark!
What an amazing collection of talent with these three. This song never fails to add pep to my mood.
I've always been a fan of Genesis and Phil Collins. There's nothing like a band with a great horn section!
Same here 👍
The horn section from the 3 great elements of the world!!!!!!! My mother's FAVORITE GROUP!!!!!!! I really hope she gets the chance to meet Maurice White!!!!!!!!!! RIP Mom, RIP Maurice White!!!!!
A rare smile from Tony Banks.
Its crazy I came across this just as he smiled in the video🤣
this was such a great song. i remember watching this vid on mtv, and loving it. that group has to be one of the greatest 80's groups.
When music was just that.. Music not just rambling....
I wish music today was this good
Why on earth this doesn’t have millions of view s?????
Freaking genius. End of story. Such a catchy song and how could anyone not love it?
Haha! At 1:29 Phil was off the sync and he knows it. Watch him start smiling!
3:09 screw up tenor sax too.
... and of course Tony was over-watching !
2:58 WAIT FOR IT
He started singing away from the mic. In those days it wasn't common knowledge how songs and music videos were edited and put together. They tried to give the illusion that these were recorded live in one take.
Man I love to watch a band practice way more than in concert - I LOVE the mistakes and them starting again...how they talk and, well, practice! 😬🎶💜💜
I was raised on Hip Hop and R&B. I heard this song YEARS ago, and I still come back to it. This is DEF one of the underrated songs!
💯
Good Lord, I wore out this album out in high school and many years after!
Still just as awesome listening to it now!
Superbly written and performed song, really one of the best of the 80s. Excellent vocals by Phil, and bass work by Mike. Phil cracks me up at 3:08.
A LOT of his videos are so funny to me!
He cracked himself up at 1:32 when he messed up the lip sync. 😂 Who can play drums , sing, AND flawlessly synchronize to their own recording simultaneously? The man is a legend for a reason. 🙌🏻🙌🏻
I loved this song when I was in high school and still do now
Another winner but I must admit, this song is often underrated but to the many GENESIS fans like me it's a winner.
tony banks is soooooooooooo underrated
thank you! i feel he rarely gets recognized but us pianists and keyboard players know he is a genius
@@grenda5 You're damn right! One of the biggest reasons I am a keyboard and synthesizer player is because of him!
@@alexchristianmusic right on Alex! keep on playing your music in joy, remember back in the day, When Tony had stacks of keys to the left and right of him, now he basically has 2 to get all the sounds he need, times have changed, one of my favorites is DODO off Abacab, he's like Mozart here, almost toying around producing those distinct chords and nuances that are uniquely Mr Banks! rock on Alex, so nice sharing with you!
I thought that was so cool how he had so many keyboards and synthesizers surrounding him. You seem to know Genesis quite well. Good for you. I'm glad I finally found someone who appreciates Tony Banks like me.
So many memories of hearing this on the radio. I miss being a kid
Metoo
Phil + knows how to Jam..
Jamba Juice 🧃 these guys made great music effortlessly .F..... Amazing🤩
WOW! I haven't seen this in over 35 years. This is classic!
I have listened to this song since 1981and I never heard this as an upbeat song I always felt it was a painful story, that I can relate to, guess that is why almost 42 years later I still listen to this song
Hell of a good song for sure!
Bass.....HEAVEN
I listen to musicians talk shit about Phil Collins, literally everywhere I go, and just shake my head. Wow.
He is legend. Musically talented...it was the music of my youth and the one band all family nembers seemed to agree upon. As time drags on and Ive lost more of my family members from passing...the more I return to this music❤
great song
I think that's Earth Wind and Fire's horn section playing. I love it!
80's ....thanks for the memories
I remember when this was first on the radio. I knew it would be my favorite song of all time. Still is! Thank you for making it apart of my life.
What a great band it's ashame how good music like this could come to an end when these guys get old and die off, but one good thing we can always listen to great music like this!
Factory phil there’s endless hits from this man
One of the best bass scores, period!
"What excuse are you to sell me?"
I'm surprised no one is arguing on FB about whether or not the EWF horn players should be considered members of Genesis!
You're too late we had this debate 10 years ago here on You Tube 😂😂😂
I haven't watched this video in a long time. I forgot how much I love it! Whether with Genesis or flying solo, I'm one of the biggest Phil Collins fans you'll find. The man is a legend!
I wasn't even aware this song existed until about a year ago, now its one of my faves - great drums, bass & brass
I've had this going round in my head all day.....so I had to come on here and listen to it.
The good Lord loves everybody
It's so cool to see the drummer do lead vocals, a lot of talent!!!!
Absolutely fantastic live !! Love the horns in this song !!
Great song with Earth Wind & Fire horn section. The Phenix Horns
A magical masterpiece still in 2023
Mike Rutherford's bass is awesome!
Never realized how great he is until recently especially with this song !
Everyone is heard in this song. Rutherford's bass, Banks' keyboards and piano. Collins' drums and thunderous vocals and the brass from Earth Wind and fire which is unseen, but the band members hilariously mimic which makes it a great video 🤗👍
Tony Banks, Phil Collins, and Mike Rutherford helped to make my sophomore year at DU one of my best college years.
One of the best Genesis songs.Turn it on again and Mamma are epic too.
OMG - SO cool and I never realized, fully.
OMG.
One of my favorite Genesis albums.
I really like the Horns but also the synthesizer in this song so great. I think it was ahead of its time.
One of my fave songs (for some reason)
Probably my favorite Genesis song
Drum and bass beat man! bangin!
A Genesis fan once told me he hated this song. I asked him why, and he said, "Well, I'm more of a fan of their '70s style." I replied, "So am I, and that's precisely why I love this song."
❤️ the bass
Mike BURNING up that bass! And Phil Collins, a genius singer and musician. Very very difficult to play those drums and sing at the same time.
Love this song from Phil Collins leading Genesis, we need more music like this today!!
