The music gives me such immense goose bumps. For those who don't know, this is Jeremy Soule who also made the music for The Elder Scrolls games (and also others like Guild Wars for example).
It's one of the very few official sountracks of a game that I've listened to multiple times just on it's own. it's so good.
I'm so happy Day9 took the effort at the start to get the music going :D
Unfortunately it seems the automatic adjusting music doesn't work anymore. Way back when I played TA the music would automatically change to the intense tracks when there was a battle going on, and then went back to the calmer tracks when you were just building your base and exploring.
When it comes to graphics, this is one of the very few games where the 3D graphics managed to strike a weird sweespot of being timeless despite being quite crude, because it perfectly mixed the 3D graphics of the units with a lot of 2D sprites of the map and effects. It's truly a gem of its time!
The dynamic music was a great augmentation to the gameplay. The quiet while the bombers we're just flying in, then going over the top once everything started going on!
He's also responsible for KoTOR 1's soundtrack, one of my all-time favorite RPGs. Guy's a straight up legend!
It's a shame he's a rapist. The TA soundtrack is great :/
This has me really stoked for the eventual Forged Alliance Forever content maybe with some casters? Why do I feel like Gyle and Sean would get along very well?
This is the Sean I fell in love with. Takes me back to those early sc2 days.
I've missed these types of videos so much!
Now all we need is a Manfred cameo, an overlord impression, and a felicity story.
@@SilTheLost Run Manfred!!!! That was funny watching Sean play Slender Man.
58:57 Now that's a typical Day9 moment :D
I played the hell out of TA in high school and college, moved on to Supreme Commander, then got super into Starcraft 2, often waking up at like 4am to watch GSL. Sean was always a highlight of those early tourneys for me, as well as his dailies. I got back into TA a couple years ago, helping playtest ProTA during the pandemic, and seeing Day[9] play it just warms my heart immensely.
Thanks for playing ProTA! Was hoping to play you at least once, and maybe have a quick chat, but seems you only wanted to play with Flex. It was very impressive how quickly you learned game by game. It's one of those games that gets more fun the more you learn. I'd love for you to come back sometime, either on or off stream, and play some more with the rest of us.
For anyone that wants to try ProTA, the mod is on the TA Universe forum and we play on TA Forever. Also we chat and arrange games on... A popular gaming chat service that begins with D but for some reason UA-cam removes my comment if I mention it. You can get help with your install there too. One last thing, we should very soon have a new file that fixes all the installation and streaming problems. Hope to see some new players!
Oh and subscribe to Total Annihilation replays!

Total Annihilation was my childhood! I'm so happy to see Sean playing this, it brings back so many memories. Seeing this kind of stuff brings some much needed joy in my life right now :)
I LOVE this game too, I'm SO bad at it but love playing it!
The pack of extra units from Cavedog for this game was the best!
Definitely a highlight the unit packs were dope af.
it’s so insane seeing this game again. i played it SO much as a child. i remember playing it on LAN with my uncle. it was so incredible.
This RTS is the GOAT imo.
Supreme commander FAF is a significant upgrade imo
Facts.
@@nelch No it isn't. Supcom is icon wars. The "realistic" scale makes it really boring to play. To zoom out enough to even see enough of a tactical skirmish, you're already just looking at icons. The pacing is leaden. The higher quality graphics unfortunately did not translate to better overall realism - despite some of the visuals being fantastic, for sure.
Supcom isnt bad, it's just overall not an improvement, was not accessible in the way TA was, and did not help expand the audience enough to make it the kind of mass market success it needed to be.
The best game soundtrack, thank you Jeremy Soule
The biggest nostalgia hit for me here is actually DxWnd. Using it to run Maplestory in windowed mode circa 2008 so I could chat with my friends on MSN/WLM without needing to tab out of fullscreen.
I poured countless hours in to TA in high school. I remember lots of fights about TA vs SC.
I was behind TA 100% and thought that SC wouldn’t last.
Lol
Played this at a LAN-party with friends, I remember I had to borrow some RAM from a friend to be able to play the larger maps!
Also remember my Pentium 90mhz giving me like 1FPS when I got attacked by a huge flying army!
Good times!
Total annihilation and total annihilation kingdoms were my childhood games. Love it!
Mine too!
WOAAHHH Total Annihilation was my very first game ever. My dad bought a computer at a local convenience store (they actually sold computers at convenience stores at that time) and this was included on a disc. Huuuuge nostalgia vibes.
YES! I love this game! Played it since I was like 5 years old in 2002.
It was very fun having Day9 Pay us a visit in TA land. Hope to see you again soon!
Welp, this is the collision of two worlds I never thought I'd get to experience. I grew up a Total Annihilation player, and seeing Sean play at last? Magical.
For me what sets this game apart is the real-time screen tracking of units, when you order a bomber to attack a ship, the screen just follows its weave and turns, magnificent!
My friends and I had such wild free-for-alls playing this game on LAN back in the day. Brings back a lot of memories seeing it again, very cool.
Just waiting for day 9 to learn about the 2nd half of the tech tree. I love that everything different he runs into just blows his mind. This game truly is a gem and the mod communiy for it in the early 2000s was just insaine.
Are there like custom campaigns and shit? Also is there a way to make the UI bigger? Cause it's so small it hurts my eyes
@@Tol1as Not sure. Im not sure if you can scale the UI that might be a legacy thing that were stuck with. It was adequate size back in the 00s given out monitors were significantly smaller than they are now.
Cool to see you give this a proper go in multiplayer. The speed at which you picked up this and got relatively competent was very impressive.
Wow. I sat through this entire VOD and had a big love/hate relationship with it. Loved watching my childhood being played on screen again, but was yelling through my screen at you to play better basically haha.
😂 same. "stop building more labs!! build more metal extractors!" etc
Yeah sure it's frustrating, but Imagine watching yourself playing this livestreamed the first time back in the days, you would be nowhere close to how fast Day9 adapts to the game. It's obvious how the RTS gene just kicks into gear when he plays the skirmish game against the AI and even with his basic knowledge of the game, he knows how to expand early and control territory to the point that the Hard AI was never even an issue.
@@DeJayHank I don’t know if you played much TA back in the day, but AI difficulties weren’t exactly programmed like they are today haha. I played that game from the age of 8 and the AI was never a challenge.
@@DeJayHank yes that's for sure, Day9 does learn fast.
*Anytime someone mentions Winamp*
"It really WHIPS the LLAMA'S ASS"
Oh my goodness.
DayJ plays THE HUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.
over 10 years and it's finally happened.
This is all i ever wanted, to watch him experience the game of my childhood that came before SC.
That INTROOOOO! Shoutout to Northwest Sinfonia whatever they're up to now
I played this game endlessly as a kid, BEFORE I found StarCraft in 2010! Core is beast with the Intimidator Cannons!
Holy shit, did not think you'd ever play this. I played the absolute hell out of this game for like the entirety of my childhood.
I loved just steathing in and capturing turents and buildings also I remember you could put the CD in your sound system and play the banging sound track
I loved Total Annihilation growing up! My brothers and I would play this at LAN parties all the time. I'm so glad Day9 got the music working, the soundtrack for Total Annihilation has to be one of my favorites of all time.
I've played a lot of total annihilation back in the days.
As well as a lot of Dark Reign
Yeah I want to see day 9 play dark reign. That game was criminally under appreciated.
Damn, the morning after PoE launch I stumble upon this! Massive nostalgia hit - that intro alone!
My favourite passtime back in the day: set loads of waypoints and watch planes circle around a mountain endlessly :)
Love that attack-move explain break! :D
Awesome episode!
As soon as I heard the sound effects i was 20 years back
So excited. this was the first game i ever fell in love with. Total Nostalgia. I'd honestly watch this stream for hundreds of hours
I can't wait for him to discover Zero-K or other TA:Spring derivatives
What a game. I played the hell out of this as a kid. Jemery Soule, John Patrick Lowrie, amazing.
Played this so much, I can remember the pace and inflection of the narrator's voice.
i’m so glad he watched the intro, i recited it word for word along with the narrator 😂
also i love how Sean talks about how a cinematic needs to tell a story and TA’s is just explosions and shooting… he defintiely didn’t listen to the narrator explaining EXACTLY why they are fighting 😂
James Earl Jones no less!
@@trezenx It's John Patrick Lowrie (see also Sniper in TF2) doing an EXCELLENT James Earl Jones impression. So, close enough I guess ;)
Dude you are cranking out some of my favorite games this week!
played this with my dad in my childhood - it was one of his favorite pc game beside jedi knight. i miss him!
I love day9 and he is now playing the game of my childhood, heck even my father played this game, only good memories, friends coming over home,, mom being OK with it because robots doesnt bleed etc etc.
Hot damn am I nostalgic about this game, thanks for playing! :D
There's a new DLL in testing stage that will eliminate the need for dxwwnd or anything else. Should be out within the month. Also you want to be subscribing to **Total Annihilation Replays** lots of great replays old and new.
Also yah ProTA. It makes all the units useful. Instead of some other mods that change the meta entirely, it just lifts the performance of the less useful ones.
Great video, good to see someone else enjoy my favourite game. Ever. :)
Thanks for the plug, Gamma!
I would love to see you play Populous: the Beginning. One of the coolest RTS I've ever played and has actually reasonable terraforming (even in 1998!).
I loved this game back in the day, spent countless weekends at a friends adding a bunch of units to the game and screwing around in 2v2's against the ai.
Really weird seeing you play this, but not unexpected. I've always wanted to see you engage with this game, its very indepth and different that other RTS of the time. I play it myself in singleplayer..
Great stuff Day9
"Don't hit ctrl D! " 5 seconds later..... 🤦♂
To win the game just hold Ctrl and type ADVANTAGE ;)
Fun fact, you could put in the TA cd to your cd player and just listen to the music track by track - I know this because I did until the cd was basically dead.
Holy shit! That hold "x" trick blew my mind!
One of many 3rd party addon features :) So is hold w while box selecting to select only mobile units with weapons. So is double-click to select units of same type on the screen... So is the megamap... loads more too
Used to play this to bits when i was a kid
hoooly this was the first computer game that i ever owned, what a throwback!! Totally forgot about this gem!!!
Talking about nostalgia games, I'd love to see Sean play Populous the Beginning. I've always thought the spherical maps was such a cool and unique idea, and I'd be interested to hear his thoughts on it.
I never realized how environmentally friendly this game was. Solar power, wind, geothermal, fusion. No way that wasn't on purpose.
This game is one of the old kings ❤️ I remember buying Dark Reign around the time TA released, watching a friend playing TA and just slapping myself all the way to the store for getting Dark Reign instead of this beut of a game.
Sean: Tour guide to the museum of our youth.
OH man, that Discount James Earl Jones narrator at 9:15
Fun fact, the guy who wrote the soundtrack for this game also wrote the soundtrack for Skyrim/Oblivion
Fucking loved this game. Me and my cousin played this so much. The follow up, kingdoms, with dragons was such a pile of crap.
Yup lol. Cavedog had a short lifespan unfortunately, and TA:K just tried to shoehorn a fantasy game with dragons and carpets etc into the TA engine, which was made specifically for robots and tanks etc. It looked terrible.
But OMG did they do so well with TA. Still my favourite game ever. In fact I'd say no other game has matched it for a combo of sheer visceral fun and depth of gameplay.
The music is still top tier.
Aaw, that SM7 has so much cat fur on it. Sick!
Supreme Commander was a worthy successor to Total Annihilation. Sad it wasn't grabbed on to by folks like other games, it's really fun.
SupCom isn't as good. It's less visceral, and slower paced. A lot of engineering decisions lead to a less immediate fun game than TA. And arguably less strategic depth also.
I love these videos revisiting the old RTS classics. And since Day9 wants to do more of them, why don't we go to the absolute beginning and play some Dune?
Hope to see you on TA Forever playing some ProTA!
Omg my first rts outside of StarCraft. With my first caster!!!!!!!! Maaaaannnnnnn let’s do this!!
Also u should do a flying heroes review
OMG this is the memories of City of Halcyon itself.
i found this game on my uncles computer. loved it
My dad still plays this in his 60s lol
I loved this game! I still love it and have returned multiple times over years. The only reason why it does not work for me as a current game is the pathing/pathfinding.
With that (and perhaps control groups) updated this would still hold as one of the more expansive and dynamic of the fairly accessible strategy games.
There's a configuration file where you can crank up the pathfinding, it was too costly for the PCs back then. Now you can crank it way high.
love seeing starcraft players trying this a supcom, the big before they realise its a macro game not a micro one, where you send endless streams of units towards your enemy and dont care about attrition, you just have to out macro them if always amusing. Nice to see this amazing game get some visibility, so many hours spent in this game, that music brings it all back.
I used to rush transport airplane and then kidnal the enemy commander with it. So if I was about to lose I would just ctrl D him
Core campaign mission 1 crash can be avoided by having a lower resolution, 1280 by 768 worked for me. viewable window is bigger than the map, so if you hit a map where flickers and crashes this would most likely be the cause so drop the resolution a few notches
oh yeaaaah babeh
that game was awesome
i wouldn't spoil the end of the campaign but it's something you wouldn't expect
and yes, the soundtrack is amazing, only 2nd best to ace combat stuff
GOG gave this away for free last year or something so I went back and played through the campaigns which I never did proper as a child (because my English skills were inadequate to understand WTF was going on). It was quite the time.
What a perfect game
No offense to Day9 but I'm glad I can skip through your narration :P. LOVE YOU MR. NINE!! I HOPE YOU PLAY THE EXPANSION TOO. Also the intro is literally one of the best videos I've ever seen
Love me some Day[9]
Oh YES. I played the shit out of this growing up, still have the cd case displayed in my ancient desk. Have you played Battlezone Day9?
Definitely need to speak with Chris Kyle.
Then Forged alliance forever and supreme commander 1 and the new RTS they are developing
Did you mean Chris Taylor, lead developer of TA and Supcom? Only Chris Kyle I could find was an army sniper ;)
Have you ever tried Zero-K? It's heavily based off of TA but with totally physics based where the units actually path to avoid fire.
There's another game called Beyond All Reason it's more closer to TA
Holy cow! Play Seven Kingdoms next!
Many of these sound effects are exactly the same as Doom 64. Guess it's not surprising, they were made the same year.
Awesome game hell ya it's on sale at steam
Krogoth... if you know, you know.
Decimated a million worlds!? 10%!!!
Should check out dark reign 2 was another classic 90's rts
Man, I loved Total Annihilation!
Have you ever played a game called NetStorm?
Netstorm was so great and weird
39:30 Yeah, they're shooting something alright...
Hey Sean, love Your vids and especially Your commentary :) consider playing Dark Colony sometime please, thanks for Your entertainment
Gotta check out Total Annihilation Kingdoms too
Why? It looks terrible compared to this...
You need to play 'Z' that should take you back to old school gaming!
Sooo good.
can't wail till he plays Supreme Commander if he likes the macro insanity.
Supcom's leaden slow gameplay is not nearly as exciting.
i'm hearing independence day sound effects
Is this a re-upload? I would bet money I saw Sean play this before.
Im super stoked for a day9 Total Annihilation playthrough, childhood memories explosion! Hope you try out the free to play, Beyond All Reason (BAR), Its basically Total Annihilation with a modern engine and it has some really cool scenarios/challenges that I would LOVE to see Sean just smash through (or head against.. whichever)
It's basically Total Annihilation in a new engine but with balance that doesnt make for great gameplay. The balance is kinda based off a bunch of mods balance rather than on TA balance.
I need Dune 2 by westwood studios to be rereleased.
You have to try out TA: Kingdoms a.k.a. medieval TA
The game they tried to make with the TA engine, which is designed to make sci-fi robots and tanks look cool? Some things are best left forgotten.
Did you make that guy a VIP then ban him yet? Didn't want you to forget.
Metal at 0.... 😂
