That tree is amazing! We have an oak tree that must be well over 500 years old. It would have been here when the Armstrongs had the tower that used to be in our field. The tower was knocked down in about 1840 but we keep finding bits of it about the place!
This apple tree needs to be preserved, even in it's diminished state, it's historically important. Was the fruit ripe enough to try? Has anyone propagated it to keep the genetics going? Is there a fruit growing group in the area that might want to gather scion wood in late winter to graft new trees? Preserving the genetics of this ancient tree needs to happen.
how did they discover this was the oldest crab apple tree in the UK? It is an amazing find but sadly looks like it is on its last legs. It should have the same care and support as Newton's apple tree.
