I believe the only time I saw the Grampian ident on my screen was their networked schools sex education programme 'Living And Growing' presented by Dr. Stanley Mitchell, a Scot. Probably their only networked programme.
i only knew of Border because of something where mentioning sex wasn’t an option- Mr & Mrs ! My grandad would’ve had the plug out quicker than you can say Holy Communion… 😃👍
3:34 The spinning lion rampant was replaced due according to TV Ark, "In 1965 Scottish Television started using the Lion Rampant of Scotland for its ident. Originally the lion spinned into force, but a complaint from The Lord Lyon King of Arms, the man in charge of protecting Scotland's heraldry, resulted in the lion just zooming in. In 1969 a coloured version was introduced".
This is a brilliant series. I’m from the south of Scotland so Border TV is in my blood, and I came to Aberdeen to get an experience of proper regional telly. I will go back disappointed, nobody in Aberdeen wants to know about news in Glasgow
What is really striking and worthy of comment, IMHO is how the first couple of frames at 7:45 and 9:10 are so incredibly similar... and then develop into completely different concepts.
Thank you there of course for this-most interesting it is too as well. Of course indeed too, STV is now the one company that is not part of the ITV main one, whilst being as such ITV in Scotland though?! Well done there too.
There was no great demand for a new animated ident for Grampian in the 90s because they were using in-vision continuity. They were right to retire the 80s ident because, although glorious, it had became dated. AFAIR the generic ITV one was only used at 9.25am and before ITN news bulletins, which served to remind people that the small station was part of something bigger, and not yet a branch office of STV. The TV saltire logo never went away and got a boost when IVC stopped. STV's current rounded triangle nicely harks back to both the 70s STV logo and the Grampian CRT saltire.
I always felt the big blue S logo that brought the name STV back and killed off Grampian looked awfully like the British steel logo well remembered from Ravenscraig. Also I’ve never met anyone in Scotland who didn’t call it STV rather than Scottish or ScottishTV.
Tough Scottish blood in those STV executives. Shame Grampian doesn't survive anymore. It always reminded me of one of my Scottish aunts. I am part Scottish, and I remember visiting her, always she wore tartan and was the epitome of a Scottish woman. Grampian seemed that, much more than Scottish Television.
Tony Currie is great, eh? He's often on TV/broadcasting forums, and a mine of information about both the past and also some technical stuff, places like TV Forum (RIP) and Digital Spy
Does Tony Currie still work as an announcer on BBC Scotland? I know I once saw a video from the Springwatch era where he was holding things together while there were technical issues going on with the network. I know that Mr Currie has a connection with the internet based radio station Radio Six International.
I strongly disagree about the 2000-6 idents, I think they're gorgeous. Totally unique and modern, they are amongst my favourite idents packages of all. It is sad about Grampian though, but it was never realistically going to make it I suppose
"Charitably described as ambient". I would say ambient, not bad, but not spectacular, either. I see that as a good thing in this case. There's a certain understated feel to them that I like, vaguely summery, even. The blue square works only in the idents with movement in them, otherwise it's just a square. The 'urban' STV fits with the image I've long had of Scotland, of it being like where I'm from, but different enough to make it seem exotic. My primary school had an annual trip to Edinburgh, which resulted in half empty classrooms for a week, and which I never went on, due to a) cost, and b) my need for routine (blame Dyspraxia/Asperger's, a nasty combo) meaning 'only' going to Scotland was a journey I was too scared to make. Watching STV might have been weird if I'd done it. "They watch Coronation Street too!"
Concerning the original Grampian ident, you get two tunes for the price of one - "Scotland the Brave" is in fact counterpointed with "Crimond" ("The Lord's My Shepherd").
Scottish Media Group acquired Grampian Television in June 1997 at a cost of £105 million. That is equal to £189.5 million or $245.2 million USD in 2019.
6:05 "STV Production from Scotland". Hindsight tells us this; where else are STV productions from? Birmingham?? Leeds?? Reykjavik?? Kuala Lumpur?? The Dark Side of the Moon???
Oh well S4C is now owned by the Beeb Ulster Television by ITV PLC and Channel 5 by CBS-Viacom leaving STV and Channel 4 as the only truly independent television services in the UK.
For the me the best Scottish Television ident was the so-called Bertie Bassett ident of the mid 1980s. Yes it was a voguish flying objects in space animation, but the logo was strong and the musical fanfare was clear and upbeat. Clearly the company didn't understand the adage; if it ain't broke don't mend it. Every reincarnation that followed never matched its success. The 2000 ident package was an interesting experiment in conceptual art, but doing away with the thistle was a baffling idea. It would have been the emotional equivalent of Yorkshire without its gold chevron. Idiots. The first computer generated Grampian ident was indeed fun and tested every bit of muscle in their kit. What a contrast to Granada's static slide ident of that era. A case of if you're an ITV minor shout louder. Perhaps the reason they kept the 1989 generic ITV ident longer than anyone else was because they recognised it was actually rather good! So now it's all STV and probably only a matter of time before it is consumed by ITV. Perhaps. Although the distinct possibility of 'Indyref2' might deliver an outcome that safeguards STV's position as Scotland's only national broadcaster. There would be complex issues to resolve regarding the funding and delivery of the BBC in Scotland lest the Scots vote to cast the rest of the UK adrift.
Mostly because ITV PLC threatened to sue them again if they didn't bow down. It was fairly different indeed at the start of the decade, but when STV's insistence on keeping local programmes going meant that the first series of Downton Abbey wasn't even shown in Scotland(the final straw for those in London), ITV PLC sued them for breach of contract.
It wasn't until well into my teens that I realised that was supposed to be a thistle. Looked like some looming figure with outstretched arms. It's as if Scottish first had the idea for the Angel of the North with that thing. Being a kid and not being well up on UK geography living in NI, STV's production of How 2 made me think Maidstone was in Scotland. I also don't like getting messy, watching other people do it on Fun House was fine. Once as the credits rolled, my granny said "Would you want to be on that?" "NO!" I yelled. And, did they rip off Central with the sand sculpture, or the other way round?
Getting messy is fun when your a kid but I don't like getting messy myself on an episode of Fun House a kid didn't want to be gunged he was told your on Fun House your here to have fun get messy and win prizes
4.13 - is that man in white standing on the outside of a top floor window at the Grampian building a Home Rule protestor, or a disgruntled shareholder? :)
BBC Scotland tried that attitude and it didn't go down well - "This is BBC Scotland on One" was the phrase used in the late 80s and early 90s BBC One Scotland.
Are you sure about UTV approaching SMG? I seem to recall it being the other way round; with the former ultimately rejecting the possibility of any merger deal with the latter. Of course, history has taught us that UTV Holdings manglement ultimately suffered a bad case of "Pound Signs In Their Eyes" syndrome and flogged the TV station to ITV plc, with the radio stations going to News Corp (despite having always proudly emphasised their independence from everyone on this side of the Irish Sea) 🙄
10:12. Iconography representing a region seemed true for the “middle five” ITV companies (TVS, HTV, Anglia, Scottish, Tyne Tees) at least.
I believe the only time I saw the Grampian ident on my screen was their networked schools sex education programme 'Living And Growing' presented by Dr. Stanley Mitchell, a Scot. Probably their only networked programme.

Was born and raised in Aberdeenshire and I don't care what anyone says Grampians first CGI ident is one of the best any UK TV station ever had.
Yeah, I like it too
The Grampian ident brings back memories of the lovely musical shows they did with the Macalmans in the 80s.
Oh its certainly full of character I won't deny that
Tony Currie,I think, still plies his trade on BBC Radio Scotland,at least he did post in vision on STV. Bit of a legendary voice!
3:34 The spinning lion rampant was replaced due according to TV Ark, "In 1965 Scottish Television started using the Lion Rampant of Scotland for its ident. So they were ultimately beaten by the Lyon King

The STV building had a huge version of that thistle on the side of it
The Bertie Bassett thistle was yet another Martin Lambie-Nairn creation.
Okay

16:32 This was a seasonal ident used in 1992 which was used in conjunction with the Blue Tiddlywinks thistle but was not a main ident.
Luckily STV told Carlton and Granada to bugger off
Tough Scottish blood in those STV executives. Shame Grampian doesn't survive anymore. It always reminded me of one of my Scottish aunts. I really like those idents too; the music especially. I do think though they should have put their logo in rather than that blue square.
Concerning the original Grampian ident, you get two tunes for the price of one - "Scotland the Brave" is in fact counterpointed with "Crimond" ("The Lord's My Shepherd").
So basically, unless you go to the northern north, you are stuck with the same idents

@@Rexowogamer Now that's just plain silly...😄
@RandomMe Entertainment Ow. 😝
Well, you never know. Southern, had it survived into the 80s, could've tried becoming STV if they wanted to update themselves.
i wanna create South Hampshire independent Television just for the ident including the face of Fred Dinage 😃
15:38 introduced, in fact, in 1988, before the generic look. You can see it made it into the beginning of the generic ident, too.
12:03 - Scottish Television dropped the 1989 generic look by Christmas 1989.
Compared to Grampian Television which used it all the way until ITV changed its logo in October 1998.
I am a SCOT!
