    Want to know the secret to growing great hollyhocks from seed, year after year? We show you how and when to collect the ripe hollyhock seed and how to store or sow the seeds directly where you want your hollyhock plants to grow next year.
    Hollyhocks are wonderful cottage garden flowers and do exceptionally well in the dry sandy coastal soils on the North Norfolk coast, where they are a particular feature every summer in the sunny coastal villages including Blakeney, the village where Gardeners Cottage is.
    We grow single-flowered hollyhock plants in Blakeney as hollyhocks do self-seed very freely and hollyhocks are easy to grow from seed in the UK, if you give them the right conditions. Stay tuned to the end of the video, to find out how you can get some Blakeney hollyhocks seeds free.

    Came here just to confirm what to do with my end of season plants. This was very thorough and informative, and I think it is lovely that you shared your seeds.

    Sorry that I don't live in the UK. Really enjoyed all of your beautiful gardens when I was there last. I could never grow roses well at my last two properties but I have put a new garden in at a property we bought on a lake in South West Michigan and lo and behold all of my roses are blooming well there. It's the frequent rain. I am moving every single rose there and watching your videos for inspiration. Thank you for your very informative style and gorgeous videos!

    Nice video. How deep does the tap root need place to grow, as our small plants are currently in our balcony flower boxes? Thanks.

    • @gardenerscottageblakeney1316
      @gardenerscottageblakeney1316  Рік тому

      The tap root is fairly deep on an adult plant somewhere between 6 inches and a foot in length in our experience but if they are in pots the root will go sideways so hopefully they will be fine as long as they are in a sheltered position they do get very tall and so need a deep root to anchor them and even if they have it they can go over if its windy

      @@gardenerscottageblakeney1316 OK thanks. Got some leaves this year. Sent some recently gathered seeds, from elsewhere, to a friend. She has a terrace so she should get a pretty response. They might become a new passion. My Grandmother and my Mother had them too.

    Great video! Just to clarify, can I start these from seed in the winter 4-6 weeks prior to last frost date and then plant them out in landscape?

    • @gardenerscottageblakeney1316
      @gardenerscottageblakeney1316  3 роки тому +2

      I would sow them now directly where you want them to grow and then thin them in late spring , early summer. They do much better that way in our experience. You may be able to transplant some of the young plants into pots if you are very careful. We always keep some seed back to sow in spring just in case we have a very hard winter which is rare in North Norfolk England but happens occasionally.

    • @msavp7492
      @msavp7492 4 роки тому +1

      Yes, my yard is full of agapanthus. Asparagus ferns and sago palms do well here also. Tough leaved plants because it gets over 100 degrees fahrenheit here for much of the summer but winters are mild.

    I love how your videos are so informative! We are in Australia with a very dry climate and summer is like 30 to 40 degree C... its said that we can grow hollyhocks as perenials here but I haven't had any experience in grow these before, so I would love, love your opinion on this...is it worth investing in growing hollyhocks as I heard that they don't like dry soil? Thanks.

    • @gardenerscottageblakeney1316
      @gardenerscottageblakeney1316  4 роки тому

      I'm not sure they would take that much dry heat, they tend to wilt here in very dry summers. they do tolerate sandy and poor soils. If you do try, let us know how you get on.

      @@gardenerscottageblakeney1316 I live in the USA, Pacific Northwest region, so our weather is kind of similar to the UK…our last 2 summers have been very dry, and hot. We haven’t had measurable rain in at least 8 weeks. I have some plants where they get morning sub, pretty shady in the afternoons, and some in direct sunlight most of the day. My hollyhocks have done very well in both places, the ones in full sun are healthier. In this situation they get watered pretty much every other day. Several of my plants are more than five years old. Hope that helps.

      Hi Bob and thank you for watching. We just scatter or place the the seeds, but we are on gravel so they slip between the stones. if you are scattering them on soil it may be worth covering them with a thin layer of soil

    I have grown from seed for the first time. They are doing pretty well and one or two are showing a flower coming along. However, the leaves have yellow spots on them. is that due to needing water? Or is it something more serious.
    I am in Canada zone 4.

    • @gardenerscottageblakeney1316
      @gardenerscottageblakeney1316  3 роки тому +1

      Thats lovely to hear that you have grown them from seed Dorothy. The yellow spots are probably rust. Rust is very common with hollyhocks. We just snip the effected leaves off and either burn them or compost them.

    So do you leave the rest of the hollyhock in the ground and just cut the stalks or do you remove the whole plant?
    Thanks

    • @gardenerscottageblakeney1316
      @gardenerscottageblakeney1316  3 роки тому +1

      Hi we leave the Hollyhock plant in the ground, as long as it looks healthy and they last for years and years. We cut the stalks back and tidy up any old leaves around base, leaving any fresh green leaves in place that look good so they can feed the plant.

    • @gardenerscottageblakeney1316

      We always sow direct where we want the Hollyhock plants to come up as we find this method for growing Hollyhocks from seed far more successful. You can transplant Hollyhock seedling and grow them on in pots or place them in the garden in other places, but we find most of the transplanted seedlings die if we do this . Far better to sow the Hollyhock seed where you want the Hollyhock flowers.

    I keep buying pom pom hollyhocks but what always grows is the patunia like heirloom type, I am not sure why this keeps happening the pom pom seeds are conserable more expensive and that's ok but for some reason I feel that some see company is putting the wrong seeds in the pompom packets.
