I love John's version of this song....yes he was dying of cancer when this was recorded but he kept going to the every end....very talented man in all of his endeavours. RIP John...you will be forever Gentle On Our Minds.....♥

I saw John so many times that I couldn't tell you how many. I took my young daughter to see him right before he left us. She is now in her 30's and remembers it fondly. John Hartford was a very special person!

That does it, after listening to John Hartford for thirty some years now, I've finally decided I'm moving to the Big Rock Candy Mountain! I'm betting that's where John is now. God speed Mr. Hartford.

John was skilled at calligraphy as well. He went to quite a few Bluegrass festivals around Tennessee. At a festival down below Nashville, he was just kind of hanging around waiting to play. - We had gotten on a "nod and how ya' doin' kind of thing" - he asked me my name - I told him, and he got a piece of card stock from somewhere and did my name in the most beautiful hand of old English script you've ever seen.

Best version of this song I've heard. He's got his cancer here, but kept playing till he couldn't. Terrific artist.

Love John Hartford's music.. this was part of the recording of "Brother Where Art Thou" soundtrack recordings, in Nashville at the Grand Old Opry original auditorium.
John was dying of cancer, lots of big names came by to say goodbye.
    RIP John..

Saw the man at the Main Point in Bryn Mawr, PA in the mid seventies.
Those were the days when you got an intimate performance from artists.
Stage was tiny and audience was about 200 people.
You don't know what you missed before singers started to play in Auditoriums.
    Love Hartford
    What else can you say....

Huh? First time hearing this version. I love it! Love the instruments. The only version I knew was burl Ives. I had the 45 when I was just 4. Love the fiddle.

Love John H. That guy with the mandolin....he'd bring the house down in Ireland in combination with John on the fiddle. Sure miss his music.

I'm wondering how old John is here. I've heard he played for "as long as he could stand" until he died at the age of 61.

Maybe it should be more obvious that the singer/fiddler is John Hartford (writer of "Gentle On My Mind")

    • @PHJimY

How could it be more obvious? John's voice, fiddle playing and appearance are all unique.

Sorry Clay, I just noticed that John's name is not mentioned in the write-up. Perhaps Jarl Plottner figured ( as I did) that everyone knows who John was.
