- In the video I state that the resistance or "Ohms" reading on a new switch should be 0- 0.1. This is wrong. A new or good switch can have a resistance or ohm reading as high as 1.5 and still be considered good. Also, some PTO switches will have pins but they will not be connected inside the switch. They are just there to ensure you don’t plug the switch in wrong. So they won’t have continuity to any other pins.

I bought this to use as my ignition switch on a 1963 Bolens 800 riding mower ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxaAnMgzTZ_djF6K1Kr3MGiW_XGUMfUP8n I repowered with a 13hp Predator engine. Worked great! On the back of this switch are 5 terminals labeled G, M, L, S, and B. The G was wired straight to ground, The S was wired from the back of the switch to my starter solenoid. The L is for any accessories, so I ran it from the L terminal to a rear light I have on the riding mower. M is for the coil, so I plugged the stock coil wire to this wire terminal. The B is for constant battery power, so this was wired to the positive battery cable. I turn the key, first click is the accessory position, and my rear light came on as expected. Turned the key all the way and Vroom...the engine started. Turn it back to the off position, and the engine turned off. Perfect! Hope this helps!

My switch had high impedance intermittently. I unplugged the conductor terminal connectors from that throw, and used the middle throw that has been unused for years, which still had new contacts inside. It worked like a charm and I did not have to buy anything.

Thank you sir. I was looking for a schematic and came across your video. Confirmed switch is bad. Mine only has five pins. Three on top, none in middle and two on the outside on the bottom. Same deal though.
Really Appreciate this video. It was helpful and to the point. I love videos that are focused and to the point without a bunch of irrelevant side information. Would have been nice if you would have gone through the steps showing what a good switch will do vs what a bad switch would do on your tester. I followed your steps but was still scratching my head wondering if I had done it right.

If you have power going to the solenoid for the pto but it still doesn't engage what would be the next thing to look at? Have a Muncie pto on the truck?
Going to the solenoid for the PTO? I’ve never seen a solenoid in the same circuit as the PTO? What machine are you working on?

This is a dumb question but do you test it while plugged in the mower or like you have it there? You never put the meter on the plug to show either so I figured that it needs to be checked while on the mower.

Watched your video and something is wrong. Tested old switch and did not have continuity on the bottom 2 spades so I bought a new switch assuming it was the switch that was bad. The new switch tests the exact same. Same pin configuration as you show. So I’m guessing ALL might not be the same? Mine is for a John Deere gt235.
Levi Some switches have pins that are not used. They are only there to make sure the switch doesn’t get plugged in backwards. If you look at the plug the switch goes into you will see there are no metal contacts in it for those pins. Sorry I didn’t explain that in the video.
My old switch was the same way as your 3 year old comment describes, but the new switch has a temporary connection on those bottom two pins and I have no idea what that is for.
Basically if I pull on the knob a further ¼" when the deck is already on, it moves out and this connects those bottom two pins temporarily. When I let go it pops back down to the "on" position and those bottom two pins stop being connected.
When you use the knob normally, because it's snaps out, you always end up temporarily connecting those bottom two pins.
Other than this, the switch behaves identically to the one in this video.
Any idea what this 3rd position is for?
Do some mowers use a ballast resistor to the pto clutch and need extra voltage temporarily to engage it or something?
Or do some mowers use pulling the pto switch out as a way to temporarily engage the starter motor or something?
I'm a little concerned about installing this new switch because I don't know what will happen when those two pins are connected...
to bypass the switch......which connections do I jump across on the wire plug to see if my blades engage without this switch?

On my original switch the pull plunger physically broke off down inside the switch. So I replaced it and the deck would engage . Shortly there after " a few lawn mowing's " cutting deck wouldn't engage again. Performed electrical test on PTO clutch and found it to be the culprit. Bought a new PTO clutch and the deck still wouldn't engage. I jumpered around the switch and the deck engaged perfectly. So could the old PTO clutch going out have ruined the new switch I installed ????
Yes, that’s possible. Just pull the switch out and test it.
great videos. I THINK my switch is bad. In the on position one of the centers doesnt go to zero like other middle one. It floats all over from 17.00 to 3.08, then stays on about 3.08....but never to zero. It stopped engaging while mowing.

There's a setting on the meter you point the knob to that is just a little picture of a dot with curved lines coming from it. Like it's indication sound waves. It is the continuity setting. Watch a video on how to use a multimeter and see how to set it for continuity
Add us to the list of people who had a bad switch. The two on the bottom didn't have continuity in on or off position. Scag 36" Walkbehind
These switches go bad all the time and should be able to be disassembled and cleaned or checked.
On a Scag Turf Tiger , if the PTO switch is bad you could have a no crank like I had.
I have a kohler pro switch with five prongs. When its on the side with two prongs does nothing js that normal
It may be. Sometimes the switch will have prongs that are not used but they are there just to keep you from plugging it in backwards. Look at the plug those two prongs go into. If there aren’t any metal contacts in the plug then those prongs aren’t used for anything
What if the bottom two pins don't have continuity?
Look into the plug on the wire harness where the switch plugs in. If there are no metal contacts in the slots for those two pins then you’re OK. Sometimes the switch has pins just to keep you from plugging it in backwards. If the plug does have metal contacts in it where those two pins go then the switch is bad.

If your switch goes bad....there is probably another reason. If you buy a new one you could burn it out as well if there is another issue. I bet the PTO clutch is bad and took the weakest link out. A new switch won't always be the answer.
*Built well, **Bestfor.Garden** also recommend plugged right into my rider 4500 series. Was short the rubber cap key and was was sent right out in the mail. Just ordered another ignition switch for my 6500 rider.*
