  • Romans were great consumers in their metropolis. Where did Romans shop for food, presents, and household items? Let's explore several districts in Rome, with a special focus on the Testaccio area, Forum, Forum Boarium, and Campus Martius (Saepta). From shops to itinerant street sellers, you could shop til you dropped in porticoes and individual shops throughout the Eternal City.

Good one! I'm guessing most of the sites mentioned were wholesale markets. Would love to hear more about the daily shopping experience of individual Romans, and their servants.

My impression is, retail shopping occurred anywhere there was room for vendors to set up tables and, possibly, awnings. Remember, only the wealthy could afford slaves to do their shopping for them. Most people did it on foot and carried their purchases home themselves, so necessarily, vendors were everywhere.

Me encantan tus vídeos. Nos entregas tanta información histórica en los lugares en donde tuvo lugar, que resulta fascinante. Podrías hacer un vídeo sobre el Mercado de Trajano?. Lo conocí, y quisiera saber mas sobre él. Gracias

Do you think women like Calpurnia went shopping for embroidery threads and other things or do you think they had slaves do it for them

Great question. For the wealthy, we can imagine the use of slaves- but, many people were also hands on!
