    What exactly is in the feed? Also how much food coloring is added?

    This method of farming is perfect. If I had to do it myself, this is how I would farm salmon. After Fukushima, I am hesitant to buy wild caught fish as the radioactive isotopes were dispersed into the pacific. The water in Norway is clean, so this gets a big thumbs up from me. This is how it should be done.

    I am glad there is concerted effort to improve the impact of salmon farming. I suggest everyone keep some skepticism because the video doesn't give statistics about the amount of sea lice, survival numbers, and the escape rates. There is likely still these problems and a tell-tale sign is in the video when they say they are keeping them in deeper waters to mitagate the impact on the environment. This shows they are still raising salmon with problems that need to be kept away. A step in the right direction but you can't say it's perfect yet.

    To generalize all fish farming as a negative is wrong. There are clearly healthy ways to farm fish, just like any animal. Not only is it not negative when done correctly but a necessity to protect the populations of all species.

      mitch jones Hi Mitch, this video is actually a positive example of farmed salmon. Our Responsibly Farmed salmon is raised specifically for Whole Foods Market in only a handful of deep-water and land-based farms, all of which are third-party verified to our standards - without antibiotics, pesticides in the water or feed, or algaecides on the nets - and they're never genetically engineered. For comprehensive information on our aquaculture standards, please visit: wholefoodsmarket.com/mission-values/seafood-sustainability/aquaculture.

Your hurting American fisherman and also participating in a practice that has had negative environmental repercussions in the past. Its literally a no brainier.

      @@wholefoods you obviously dont know what you are talking about. antibiotics do not apply...,and genetic engineering, or algicides are the least of the varied issues caused by salmon farming around the world. As for no pesticides -- I doubt that is true. THe main issues with salmon farms are water pollution, the spread of disease to wild salmon stocks, and the accidental release of non-native salmon.

    The amount of purists complaining in the comments is disheartening. There are ways to farm animals that are better than pure profit driven systems and may have benefits compared to wild caught items. Just deal with this reality.

    There is no room for the fish to move around. I'm wondering where does all that excrement go to? The close proximity is bound to produce diseases....not only with the farm fish but also with the wild fish.......

    • @jllisa8876
      @jllisa8876 10 років тому +1

      The explanation was mostly good however, I have heard and seen the disease process in fish that live in a close proximity.

    • @CraigKasbergTidalVision
      @CraigKasbergTidalVision 9 років тому +2

      Jl Lisa Exactly! Just because it is deep, it just means all the excrement and wasted food get deposited farther away, so it is harder to point the finger at the exact farm that caused the damage. This video makes me sick.

    Any farmed salmon is bad for the environment. The BC coast has had one of the worst years for salmon fishing due to farmed salmon. If Those salmon aren't wild, then in that case they're full of shit. Pacific salmon are wounded due to the sea lice spread by farmed fish and viruses such as HSMI. Pesticides, antibiotics all contribute. I don't care if this big company is farming salmon, the RIGHT way, it promotes farmed salmon, and the enrolment of big corporations in Other places around the world. If rather have wild salmon especially in the states or Canada then a salmon held in a pen. Thanks for this whole foods, you have officially done a huge favour to the wild salmon stocks. I hope you remember though when all the wild salmon are dead.

    • @CraigKasbergTidalVision
      @CraigKasbergTidalVision 9 років тому

      Stephen Imsong farmedanddangerous.org is a good place to start. Basically farming fish is not possible to do sustainably, and since they are fed a lot of proteins that are natural to their diet (plant, chicken, ect) , they become very high in toxins! Also, since salmon are not made to life in pens like this, they are given more antibiotics per pound than ANY other livestock. Not to mention the damage they cause to the environment... Wish it wasn't this way, but it just is.

    Whole Foods just lost a customer, and as many people as I can inform about this, until you stop carrying any farmed at sea salmon. So sad that people go to you expecting they are supporting industry that align with their believes and think they are getting products healthy for their families... and then you go and sell them farmed salmon! So sad.

      All at sea salmon farms use antibiotics in the feed, hydrogen peroxide to kill the sea lice, and put wild fish that pass by in danger. Land based farms are a huge improvement with the issues of salmon farming (still farmed on land salmon contain higher levels of toxins from their unnatural diet). The fact that you guys allow any at sea farmed salmon is going to keep me, and as many people as I can inform, away until you step up and discontinue. Also, many of the worst salmon farms out there do not need algaecides on the nets because of the new materials they are using...

      Craig Kasberg And the toxins in farmed salmon are 8 times that of sustainably harvested wild salmon... And the omega 3s? There are so many omega 6s in farmed salmon that it is not beneficial. Research the dangers of too many omega 6s in a diet. Whole Foods, you are poisoning your ignorant customers with this one!

    There are thousands more jobs in the wild sport fish and commercial fish industry you're putting at risk making the few jobs (low paying) on your open net fish farms pale in comparison. And depending on who owns the farm the largest part of the profits are possibly leaving your community and maybe leaving Canada (sounds like a water world Walmart). If these farms are having a negative impact on wild salmon (There are numerous studies in peer reviewed science journals supporting this) as I believe they are, these farms need to be stopped. There are alternatives which are safer and less profitable which is the real reason you're in our beautiful west coast waters killing our precious wild salmon right? All for greed at the demise of nature which you care nothing about... shame on you all!. You are not part of something special and I pray you are nothing more than a momentary blight soon to be gone! Stop Open Net Fish Farming!!
