There is something that makes the Yu Ji battle even trippier: it’s a reversal from the source material. If you read through Sun Ce’s interaction/s with him in RotTK, it reads as something even weirder. Furthermore, Sun Ce’s death comes about because he had Yu Ji killed. This is actually tamer than what’s in the novel!
It's implied this all happened because of a Mystic affecting him during him and Zhou Yu retaking their home. And subsequently, his death sometime after the Wu dynasty was on its feet.

I'll be honest, I'm amazed a major player in the reviewing community has also heard of No Straight Roads, as it's a pretty good game, especially for the first (and only as far as I'm aware) major title from an indie developer.
Granted, indie devs with great games are fairly common depending on which you play, but this is from a company and a country that (and I mean this in the best way I can) I didn't expect to make something as good as NSR, Malaysia!
Even for a game that shows off the power of what at first sounds like a generic genre (i.e. EDM), it manages to make each subgenre sound unique, and no two bosses have the same kind of music, design or stage. In short, my hat goes off to Metronomik, here's to a possible sequel!
Agreed. Especially with a pathway by successfully balancing out edm and rock. Literally managing to get the needle to stay at a consistent 50/50, not dropping it throughout the boss battles. To hammer in the idea that although at opposing ends, when working together, in equal parts, something truly special can come about. I mean, let's be honest...rock n roll crossed with drum and bass? THAT SOUNDS LIKE THE MOST BADASS THING EVER.

1. The color of the menu theme at the end is Mint
2. Poo is dead when he gets the final KO and leading up to it, because Chugga gave up on trying to revive him.
3. In an earlier video, Josh used footage of a particular scene at the end where it uses your real name that you entered at the beginning of the game and says, "__ kept praying." The footage he used said, "All of us kept praying.", which is 100% footage from Chugga's Let's Play.

You don't NEED to change controller ports, actually. If you keep fighting Mantis without doing so, after the game explicitly tells you to switch ports, the game will assume you can't access Controller Port 2, and will ask you this via Codec Call. The game then tells you to destroy the heads of the statues in the boss room.
Yeah same with Matt from SGB on Metal Gear Solid: ETA on Mantis boss fight. And after couple tortured electric attacks that Gray Fox break the jail door.

To me, I love the Bravely Second example because of a tiny detail Josh actually got a little wrong about Providence. He doesn't attack you if you take too long selecting moves, it happens whenever he's "ready" to attack, and he interrupts whatever is going on to attack. (Including mid attack animation!)
Mechanically, IIRC, he attacks on what's basically an invisible timer...which is eerily reminiscent of the classic ATB Final Fantasy systems. While the game itself is a turn-based speed style game like Pokemon or FF 1-3.
It's almost like an inverse version of Psycho Mantis, where instead of you beating him by thinking outside of the rules of the game, the boss is attacking you via an entirely different system YOU can't control.
I was wondering why providence was so unsettling in its pattern.
Ehh.. you're half-right about Mantis. He has you do that, sure, but if the player just doesn't swap to the second controller port, through a series of Codecs, the player IS given an alternative.
Thing is, Kojima only did that because someone reminded him that some people might be playing it on an emulator (which, clearly, lacks controller ports). Metal Gear Solid in general is full of stuff like this; for example, near the beginning of the game, one of the characters flat-out tells the player to check the back of game case for a Codec frequency number that is 100% necessary to progress in the game (granted, there is another alternative for this as well, but the fourth-wall-breaking route is obviously preferred by all parties).
I'm just saying, but I'm surprised that one skylanders final boss where she enters the choose your character thing on the portal periparal wasn;t here at least as a mention

pretty much anything from Psychonauts is a mind skewer, so choosing one boss must have been difficult.
Another Honorable Mention : Mustache Girl from A Hat In Time
The arena is trippy and seizure inducing, whether you love to admit it or not.
That moment when the final boss goes from being Evil Falco wanting to take over the real world to Bill Cipher's older cousin deleting your save file.
Also, Bravely Second getting praise on this channel gives me great joy.
I mainly clicked just to see how The Quarter Guy would react to the video. I mean, he made a top 10 about mindf*ck moments.

Crossover shippers: Write that down, write that down.
One way they could have changed Barbas’ character for the better would be to give him multiple faces. So before the boss, we see different Anchors for the Raptor network.
That way, the boss switches between different voices and faces the more damage Dante does.
Helps to add to the theme of the boss, different faces yet the same message.

I'm actually really glad someone talked about Bravely Second's final boss. sure, it's not the greatest, but i feel that's it's very underrated. much like the whole game tbh. it was a fun fight that wasn't as bullshit as the first game's final boss, but still had ways to mess with you.
Also that game has a Catmancer and Pastry chef jobs makeing the best game by default

Kinda surprised there isn't a SMT/Persona boss here (considering the mature subjects that are present in those games).
Honestly I was surprised the obligatory Goichi Suda rep being so low on the list and from neither Killer 7 or No More Heroes.

Disturbing bosses? Yes. Mind screw? Not really, the themes are usually concrete and easily defined.
I would say personally aside from Scarecrow, Mad Hatter in Arkham Origins is my mindscrew boss in the series. It was the level that confirmed my suspicion that the devs who make the games use drugs for these levels.
Photoshop Flowery is literally impossible to lose against.
You die as many times as you need, but dying doesn't limit your progress, so you just keep pushing forward through the scripted events with more or less deaths until they're gone

I'm kinda leaning towards Bael from Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.
As the ruler of all demons, he's talked up more than a few times throughout the game. When you finally fight him, you'd expect a giant dragon or something like that. Instead, he's a three-headed monster (one human, reptile, and cat), with all three connected by long necks in a circle. You're not even really on a stage when you fight him, rather within the loop that is his body. It's the kind of form that could only belong to the demon that rules all others.

So, the Character Yu ji actually has this sort of unconfirmed idea of how Sun Ce died.
Yu ji, whose name is actually Gan ji, was a wandering taoist that roamed around the Jiang Dong region during the time Wu was under control of Sun Ce. Yu Ji was actually being praised as this powerful magician and healer, which, when Sun Ce heard of him, grew suspicious and had him executed on the reason that Yu ji was confusing the people of Wu of his talents. Yu ji's spirit was said to have returned and haunted Sun Ce as act of vengence, which caused Sun Ce to die of shock.
The reason this story is, to some, considered false due to the lack of evidence holding weight to this. Yes, there are a few, if not, a couple of ancient texts talking Yu Ji and Sun Ce's death, but they tell different accounts on how Yu ji managed to kill Sun Ce. Some historians think that Yu ji would of been to old to have met Sun Ce and some of the tales depict Yu ji as less of a innocent person.

3: Pretty much all the final bosses are mind fucks in some way. Sans is a bullet hell mind fuck, Asriel is a light show mind fuck and this one is obvious.

Can’t really think of any of the top of my head where the whole battle is a mind fuck. Only ones that maybe come to mind are MGR Armstrong due to the tonal wipelash or that boss from Cyans drams in FF6 where you have to kill your own party members.
He made a Top Five a couple years ago on his tumblr after he released Top Ten BEST Dynasty Warriors. To make it short:
5: Yuan Shao for being a worse Zhang Jiao.
4: Wang Yi for VENGEANCE VENGEANCE VENGEANCE VENGEANCE VENGEANCE VENGEANCE VENGEANCE
3: Lianshi for being too fanservice-y and making him feel dirty when playing her, and having a crappy moveset.
2: Jiang Wei for having an annoying voice and embodying everything wrong with the Shu kingdom's politics. If he had a bad moveset, he would be Number 1, but he doesn't.
1: Chen Gong for having an annoying voice, a bad moveset and shady politics.
For Metal Gear, I would say that an option would have been The Sorrow, or a good amount of MGS2 bosses if Mantis was not an option.

God, I completely forgot the mind-f***ery that was present in the earlier WWE 2k games.

*watches # 10* So in dynasty warriors 5 you get to do that yu ji boss fight and I kinda find it creepier and sadder to me. you're in a castle arena at night with only torches acting as your light.
Dealing with the phantoms, you fight not only sun jian, but also your own soldiers and even da qiao his wife. Depending on which one you defeat you'll get a mini cutscene as they fall defeated before revealing it's a mind controlled soldier that was pretending to be them due to magic.
According to the camp talk where you're given backstory on the battle or whats going on before you enter the stage, you find out Yu Ji entered Wu shortly after Sun Ce gets the foundations of wu situated and he's considered the little conqueror.
He's lying and manipulating people in the background to mess with the army's moral before he decided to challenge sun ce 'one on one' to kill him. After the battle Sun ce falls ill and passes away, hinting that the magician yu ji cursed him.
You can only get this stage by playing as sun ce, and he reveals that after the fight, he's not feeling right. If you play as da qiao, in her ending cutscene, it shows that despite winning the battles and him being alive, sun ce is still weak, and running on borrowed time.
Even more of a mind funk. ASMODEUS.EXE is on the Nintendo DS
I would mention the Distortion World from Pokémon Platinum since it’s still the trippiest dungeon in the franchise. It has a phenomenal atmosphere with great music and gravity flipping mechanics and my favorite Pokémon from the generation, Giratina, offering a menacing presence while being unusually calm and lawfully orderly for the Pokémon god of chaos. However I am not going to hold it against you because the boss battles against Cyrus and Giratina are standard battles against static (I’ll be it atmospheric) backgrounds, and the strength puzzles are underwhelming. Also, I am holding out for the Sinnoh remakes to crank the atmosphere to 11, and possibly bring back inverse battles to take this to the biggest mindf*%^ in the franchise.
Lusimine from Sun/Moon could have been on the list if we fought her instead of her Pokemon.
I guess 0 ² wasn’t mind freaky enough to make the Honorable Mentions.

The good thing about flowey is that he gradually becomes less and less intense throughout the fight, especially when the other 6 human souls rebel against him. The music also gets more and more hopeful. I surprisingly only died once in this fight. Ended up being much less of a nightmare to me than what I expected.
Your teasing of an Undertale entry had me drooling! Even though I knew exactly who you'd be talking about I was just itching so see you talking about that little piece of poison ivy!
Also, I think this is probably the first time you talked about Doki Doki Literature Club on this channel. Sure, Monika wasn't an entry, as the game doesn't even have boss fights, but it was still interesting to see her here.
Lastly, there's still one thing that I'm waiting for: a boss fight that actually moved your joystick and buttons! Like on your actual physical controller! Now THAT would be a mind screw!
Every final boss in Undertale has a key word attached to it which I really like: Asriel has your friends trapped and your action command is to SAVE them and Asriel from himself;
Photoshop Flowey locks the game up and you're forced to face him, and even though you're alone on this you call for help and the trapped souls try to aid as much as possible but to finish him of you have to stand through the chaos and FIGHT! Fight your foe! Fight to survive! Fight to the end! And FIGHT for yourself;
And Sans, if it isn't obvious after all you did, you are not fighting, you are KILLING, you did all that because wanted to (kind of wish the FIGHT command changed to KILL just to rub it in) Sans points this all throughout the fight and you get some dialogue of how sadistic you can be if you redo the fight after winning it. And you'll have to live with the consequences of all this if finish of Asgore.
Damn I love this game.

You know the thing where mantis makes you switch controller ports reminds me of the fight against Kaos’s mother in, I think it was swapforce (it’s been a while) where she hides in your portal and you have to take your skylander off the portal to make her go back into the game
A boss that I find really strange is the final boss of epic battle fantasy 5 as they are constantly talking to the player and then the ending just made me feel kinda disturbed cause of how it says its "dying" words and what they are.
Yes! Bravely Second! Loved that game. I felt it and Default messed with the fourth wall WAY better than Undertale. Especially so in the final battle with Providence and in a way that wasn't cheesy or felt outright undeserved, as you spend most of the latter half of the game trying to redeem the villains so it makes sense they'll come around to thank and cheer you on.
Exactly both bravely games do mindfucks crazy well

Gotta say, as someone who plays plenty of Dynasty Warriors, I do remember that character and mission, it was so confusing and weird to play, it was so out of place yet fitted in so well at the same time ... Even if both versions of the game I've had, failed to work past half way :/ ... Wait, I can't remember if that was 7 or 6 ... It's been a bit lol.

Oh yay! I thought I was the only one that loved the providence boss fight! It’s objectively one of the most unique, triply and frantic final bosses I’ve ever faced in a video game. Definite deserved to be on this list
Some of these boss fights aren't even crazy or trippy enough tbh, there's a lot more creepy and crazy bosses in other games such as Psi Ops The Mindgate Conspiracy, Age of Conan, War of The Monsters, The Forest, Borderlands 1, Terraria, and of course Half Life 1...
My I add that Kaos from Skylanders is chaos incarnate at times? I know that the Skylanders franchise was made for kids, but some points of it is just fucked up. Just look into some of the series 1 figurine backstory that exists!

I'm surprised Catherine's boss fights didn't make it on the list "Immoral Beast", "The Child" except for Big Brother in the Full Body version and the "Fist of Grudge" which is just a hand and an arm the rest of the bosses are enough to give me nightmares. Although given that it's the month of Halloween maybe "Bosses That Give You Nightmares" should've been the next list with one of these bosses on it.

Not gonna lie, #3 is kind of my #1. (spoilers)
One of its more well-known inspirations (#4) was already spoiled for me (its fight was the first thing from its game that I saw), but I was going into the game half-blind, having played a demo of it a year or so prior and knowing "don't trust this character."
I was playing into the night, being as passive and cautious as I could be, even making the good choice on the final boss...
And then Flowey crashed my game.
And then Flowey deleted my save.
And then THAT LAUGH. That laugh is like a Redead to me. I freeze the fuck up every time I hear it.
I managed to win, and give a speech about how he taught me determination...but ohhhh jeez it still gives me nightmares...

for me, the darkness 1 boss: the darkness versions of jackie, i died a few times to it because i didn't know what to do, i was so used to shooting my way out of fights, WHEN IN THIS ONE FIGHT YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO NOT FIGHT, in a game where you do nothing but shoot your way out of situations and have 2 demonic heads that eat hearts, seriously, WTF

Its not often I see the Bravely series on a countdown. Im glad Providence was on this list because he was also such a mind blower when I first played it, his name, blatant 2nd phase design, and the fact that he talks Directly to the player about how if you continue the heroes will suffer (Although there are probably more games that do the "stop playing this game or else" better and more shocking) Im wondering how will Bravely Default 2 one up Second's fourth wall break if they have the celestial realm be part of the game
My personal favourite is the True final boss of Lenna's inception. I've avoided story spoilers. Since the game is a tribute to Zelda as well as game glitches, most of the bosses already tend to be out there, but the last one has you fight an old man unleashing fire barrages at you, then a link expy and after that a bunch of clones of your main character that attack with whatever items you have equipped. The only way to beat the clones is to remove all your items. Other highlights include having cut dialogue play with a heart meter that moves as if it were talking and right after that you have to dodge all the hearts. There's also the part where your playable character gets switched for the previously mentioned link expy and have to let yourself get killed by a dummied out boss. And THEN you start controlling that boss as the real final boss acts as if it were the playable character. Beating him has him choose continue, so the only way to advance is to lose the fight. Only then can you advance and land the "finishing blow" once you go back to normal.
