1: VMU was inventive and largely planned to capitalize on the success of Tamagotchies at the time.
2: That would have been incredibly expensive to make the Saturn totally backwards compatible. Considering how poorly the Saturn did, it wouldn't have made business sense.
3: The Dreamcast controller was in development before the Dual Shock was first released. Sega had no reason to think that concept would have been the success story we know it as now.

Initially its the excitement of having them, then it evolves in the wanting to preserve them. That tends to be the nature of collecting.

I simply searched on EBay for "Dreamcast development" and got lucky.

Independent development is a great thing that I support, and it's done using superior means. These units are not only illegal to use for game development (without a license from Sega themselves), they're also impractical.
They require a PC running Windows 98 to operate and your average PC has vastly more power for programming this stuff.
They realistically can serve no greater purpose now than collectors pieces.

Amazing collection, Adam - as an avid Sega lover, I'm naturally totally in envy!

@flarn2006 I talked about that in the devkit videos. The short answer is I bought one on Ebay and got the other for the cost of shipping (essentially free).
I doubt it'd fit in a printer port, but you might be right.
No that glitch couldn't work. I know there is one that screws with the sound while its on, but thats because the nature of the code is to screw with time. And that game uses time to initiate certain sound effects. But if you stop using Gameshark it wouldn't do anything.

For the record, you can still find SCSI cables all over the place, they are a predominantly used connection for old server drives, which have now moved to iSCSI. In fact, when you emulate an ISO it does so by bridging a SCSI connection. Also the port on the back of your Mk. I or whatever sound development unit is a Parallel connection. Another lost computer protocol that was used for many printers back in the day.

The Dreamcast is not meant to play them, it's just that simple.
It's a software exploit that hackers discovered in like 2000. They reprogrammed the games to run on it. The end result is the Dreamcast stresses itself out trying to read them. After not too long of doing that, it stops working because laser is dead.

@ChristianWSBR I doubt the Mad Catz controller would work on the 360. It barely works on a regular Dreamcast. The bumpers wouldn't be there, so Sonic Generations would suffer. As for the C and Z buttons of a Mad Catz controller, they can't make up for buttons not found on regular Dreamcast controllers. They're designed to be programmable combo buttons. Example, you can tell the Z button to represent "up up A" so that in a fighting game the character will always do the combo.

Honestly I'm not a programmer. But I know the PC involved has to do a lot of the work. That being the case, it's not a good idea to run it on anything other than an authentic system.
This stuff is neat, but really is just a novelty. Your average PC could make Dreamcast games. It's just that few developers remain who are interested in making games for it. And none remain that want to take the time to make 3D rendered games.

Blank GD-Rs are exceedingly rare and incredibly expensive. Worth far more than almost every game on the system. Hell, I only have one blank GD-R.
Wouldn't be practical for that reason alone.
But more over, the Dreamcast can't read a GD-R without a PRESSED official System Check 2 disc. Only a handful of which even exist.

The SEGA Saturn is still the only SEGA system I can call a premium system. The Dreamcast, well it's cool and all, I dislike it because new CEOs. NEW CEOS for some reason came in right after the Saturn's failed launch and so they said "fuck this" and got rid of it basically, and that was their plan from the start was to kill it off.
The Saturn was made by those awesome Genesis technicians and it was SUCH an improvement over it, yet nobody understood its potential; it just had so much. So, knowing the Dreamcast could have had backwards compatibility. It even has enough RAM to commute with those RAM cart games and internal memory in those VMUs as well which is infinite unlike the Saturn's internal memory which, for some reason, low and battery-powered on top of that.
So I might've wanted to keep my Dreamcast if I knew it was backwards compatible. But since it wasn't, and quite frankly I enjoyed the Saturn's jewel cases and discs better, I cared more for it; again it just felt so high quality to own this system and if you pay over a hundred dollars for it, you feel like you spent your money's worth.
Every title I own for it is a masterpiece, specifically because I aim for the best; and all of them look resplendent on my television that is made in a way to make old games have no visible pixels whatsoever, all rendered onscreen at once; and thus 2D games look amazing. However, the 3D library is lacking, but who cares I wanted it for its awesome 2D.
And the system is still impossible to properly emulate on PC unless you do the approach of buying the actual game, putting it into the computer and using the well-known emulator that tricks the disc into thinking it entered a SEGA Saturn and the disc is like "Alright I am not rotating or nothing, but this is the same hardware and shit from the looks of it. Maybe it is a new, bigger SEGA Saturn or something so why not?" and boots up without hesitation.
But, yeah, if you want the real experience you gotta buy one. It does have Earthworm Jim and Sonic the Hedgehog from the Genesis, but not too many of those titles came back; again thanks to those dumb CEOs whom made bad business choices and could have made the SEGA Saturn great but chose not too. SEGA is mostly bad in business because someone important ALWAYS leaves the industry and it screws any project they ever had over, so I can not say I blame the system itself but rather the people behind it.
In the end, the Saturn is a true collector's item and the only console you can buy that's for collecting and you can play it too and enjoy it as well. With hits such as Castlevania: Nocturne in the Moonlight (outside its failed transparency that is, but the new levels and character make it a little more like a full package; given the original creator wanted this stuff on the original release), Sonic Jam (ports of all old-school Sonic games, not emulation; still superior to any anthology series today), Street Fighter (all of them, they are just so damn fun) and much more, you just can't go wrong with it. I was just playing mine with a friend recently and he loved it, despite its old age.
The Saturn truly feels like premium as I said if it can appeal to someone like my friend whom grew up on modern systems and gets a kick out of a SEGA console. So in the end, well I like the Dreamcast, I just wish it came later; the Saturn needed its time to shine, but it failed to get that; and the Dreamcast stole ALL of the Saturn's future plans such as Shenmue, the 3D Sonic games (with real polygon 3D, after the executives bitched about the awesome 2D-on-3D similar to Mario Kart 64 but not copying it because this game came BEFORE that), Toejam & Earl (which eventually failed anyway, but a beta recently came into the public domain proving its existence) and lots that should have been on the Saturn, but instead were inherited by the Dreamcast.
Overly-expressed opinion, but this is just my viewpoint on why the SEGA Saturn should have stayed with us longer. It was more powerful than the competition too, it just needed an extra push which it never got. Oh, and most importantly SEGA's bad business choices such as rejecting Sony's team up request (only God knows why) and a company whom wanted to make its 3D hardware. That same company went on to the N64's instead, which boned SEGA since they wanted to be independent for some reason. Guess it makes sense though, given their awesome success with the Genesis and they were the big dogs on the video game market, taking up all of the market share; but screwed up big time by not asking for help when they clearly needed it, which screwed them over big time. I love my Saturn for what it is, but I hate the SEGA executives in general (the new ones I imagine, since the old ones were much smarter clearly with their Genesis) now after finding out these horrible truths about their business-making decisions which could have ultimately kept them at the top if they just at LEAST chose to team up with Sony I mean come on! Oh well, bygones be bygones, all in the past. Makes you wish what could have been though, huh? I don't care since I have tons of great titles on mine, but I just wish SEGA was still making hardware today; they were so far ahead of the game.

      @msh1044 9 років тому

Medachod Nice read. I own all the SEGA consoles but the Saturn is always a bit special to me. When i was young i grew up on the Master System with a little bit of Genesis thrown in. So i guess this is what "gaming" looked like to me in my mind. Later, already years after the dreamcast i picked up the Saturn and the dreamcast too and started collecting for them. The Saturn feels like quality. It is a CD based system but you don't really notice it at all. The only thing that is there are the games. And they are great fun. The library of the Saturn is kickass as well with many unique titles that feel like gems. The ability to add a ram cart proved to be a smart choice as well. Now to be fair the dreamcast has many well made games for well. But the console was made as a budget power horse and it shows. The incredibly load noice coming from the fan and the cd reduce my fun playing it. I have no idea how people can stand it. I still play all consoles from time to time. But i do find myself coming back to the Saturn most often.

    • @Medachod
      @Medachod 9 років тому +2

msh1044 Exactly. With the Saturn, you notice quality and care. But, with the Dreamcast, you can tell right away they just aimed for better graphics and processing; not caring much for its design in general among other things such as minor problems that will hinder the playing experience of others, such as its obnoxious fan.
And, I still don't think it's bad. I just wish it came afterwards; like, maybe in 2000 at the earliest so that the Saturn could have had Shenmue and at least ONE killer app for it.
The Saturn shows its quality thanks to its RAM (wish Waku Waku 7 used the 4MB instead of 1MB though) expansion improving every 2D game and even making 3D ones look well above the PSX.
I mean, some arguments go like "their compressed sound would be improved only with the RAM" well, news flash: the RAM is there and they can use it; technically making it superior to the PSX.
Especially if you take into consideration that, according to sources, the Saturn was liable for an expansion up to 128MB of RAM just to have wiggle room for the missing effects it had. In other words, there could have existed a 3D Saturn game that had transparency, better-than-PSX 3D and maybe no loading times.
It is incredible to think that the Saturn just had so much more potential than either one of its competitors that still had good enough games. Even the N64 has enough titles to satisfy me; because they were all finished on time and saw releases with only a small few being left out.
The Dreamcast has had MORE than enough releases by now thanks to its homebrew community; so people shouldn't be requesting for a Dreamcast revival.
In my opinion, a true revival would be SEGA Neptune. A system with Saturn backwards compatibility that does what the PS3 did and makes all Saturn games with choppy processing have fluid processing (most noticeable for the aforesaid title I brought up that needed RAM and Nocturne in the Moonlight) and improved graphical effects; most noticeably improving all mesh effects, though having an option to play the games the original way in case the upgrade makes them feel a bit awkward.
Actually, that system sounds like it is only aiding the Saturn more than being a modern gen system itself :P

Hey there Adam, that is quite a nice collection of hardware. I am also a Sega nut myself and spent several years working at Sega during the time of the Saturn and the Genesis/Sega CD/32X was on it's way out.
To my point (and question) is during the lifetime of the Saturn, I had moved onto GT Interactive and one of the interesting tidbits that was late in the Saturn's life is one Sega DTS disc from November 1996 that included code samples and various tools for 3D model creation with software for Windows, Mac (the classic Mac OS on 68K or PPC hardware with no compatibility on a current Intel powered Mac with OS X)
Other software on the disc is for SGI hardware and software of which I've never seen.
The main question I have is are these discs worth anything to anyone that is a hardcore Saturn fan?
I love the system and while it was a mess and simply left to sit thanks to the marketing of Sony. One reason why my time at Sega ended much earlier than I wished. After moving onto GT Interactive, my development knowledge of the hardware was a huge plus and also learned a lot of other publishing standards from Sony and Nintendo (PS One and N64) as well as the first Unreal on PC.
My love for the Saturn has never changed. The system got me into the industry with Virtua Racing and the heartbreak of the system being dropped. Along with several other odd things I've kept over the years, to this day, I haven't seen another Saturn development disc like mine.
How can I put a value on something I haven't seen anywhere else. The paper sleeve is orange with blue typeface and is labeled as "DTS" obviously not to be confused with the audio standard as I have had some knuckleheads think it was.
Your feedback would be quite helpful and greatly appreciated.
Thanks for showing all the neat DC hardware!

It's hard to say if they would. All independent games that get released don't have issues because they develop the hardware themselves. To steal Sega's hardware to make profit on a Sega console, it's something they may take offense to.

Some answers: Yes, incredibly. EBay, or specialty sites like the Assembler-Games forums.
I've used them to play games, never to make any. No, I can't program anything. Even if I could, these machines are incredibly out of date and I lack the raw materials to do anything with them. Such as an excess of GD-Rs. These things are really hard to get to work with a PC that isn't Windows 98 based. So, they can't really do what they intended to do.
Plus, using them to make games would be illegal.

Not without a degree in programming, massive amounts of money and time, a Windows 98 based PC, and of course written legal permission from Sega.

As I believe was stated in the video, a friend of mine sent it all to me.

I'll do a Dreamcast collection video as my 100th episode of Keep Dreaming.
My Shenmue fuck tape will be the 1,000,000th episode.

@greenteaps3 The Bleemcast beta doesn't support saving. Just the three official releases (Tekken 3, Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo 2). Unfortunately there is no way to save with the beta. So, enjoy a game while it runs, but save states aren't going to happen. Look at it as incentive to get really good at a game and eliminate the need to ever save. I beat Silent Hill 1 that way (using the Bleemcast beta.)

Yeah I get this a lot.
What you don't understand is that your average PC has an easier time making a game these days.
These require a PC with Windows 98 to operate.
Not to mention licenses and time.

He sent me that Hellgate GD-R actually.
I've checked, there really isn't anything on there, sadly.
One of them doesn't even have a harddrive.

  • @AdamKoralik
    @AdamKoralik  12 років тому

Its impossible because these machines require a Windows 98 based PC to run.
Thats not exactly something people really have much of these days.
Not to mention Microsoft cut off support for Windows 98 a long time ago, so you can't even get online with them anymore. So you can't install drivers or anything.
Yes, its impossible to use these to make games, accept it.
They are absolutely not for sale.

It's very interesting to watch these older videos from before I subscribed. You're very energetic and slightly crazy in your speech patterns in these. I'd imagine you wanted to be very quick.

1: That would be a massive financial loss to me.
2: It would be illegal for them to develop games on them.
3: It's not practical for them to do so, even if you ignore the law.
4: Your average PC has an easier time doing that now.

You could try Ebay or the Assembler Forums.

Oh, Sega had these and sent them out to developers such as Eidos and Capcom and so on. When Sega stopped production, they didn't bother to recall this stuff. So employees of Sega or Eidos/Capcom/Acclaim whatever, keep them and sell them down the line.

  • @AdamKoralik
    @AdamKoralik  11 років тому

Um, yes, but they're incredibly expensive and rare.
Plus they don't work on stock Dreamcast without the proper boot disc which is insanely rare.

@PrrrromotionGiven As nice as that sounds, it doesn't seem probable to turn a profit of any kind. For one, its illegal to use this hardware for game development without Sega's permission. Assume we ignored that, we'd have to be able to sell enough copies to make it worth the time and effort, not to mention the material costs of making the game. And of course all of this with the hope that Sega doesn't sue us. The commercially released independent games don't use these things.

Having two joysticks is a newer idea bud. The PS1 didn't do that until late in its life. Around the time the Dreamcast was launching. So you really can't hold that against them.
Some of the decisions they made were bad, but they went with their gut, and sadly it was wrong some times.

And no, I'm not putting music in there.
