Hey I'm Andy with ProGuitarShop and ToneReport.com and today I'd like to introduce a revolutionary hum-canceling single coil from Mojotone, the Quiet Coil. Mojotone's new Quiet Coils are different from any other noiseless pickup you've heard. They are designed with one goal in mind, to sound, look and feel like classic single coils without the 60 cycle hum.
Mojotone's pickup engineer, David Shepherd set out to achieve the perfect single coil tone by adhering to tried and true ingredients used in vintage pickups; heavy 42 gauge Formvar wire, fiberboard bobbins, cloth covered leads and essential Alnico magnets. The Quiet Coil is also the only hum-cancelling single coil to have a side by side coil design, rather than the stacked coil types from the likes of Dimarzio and Kinman. The pure single coil sound is also maintained without the use of active circuitry, PCBs or any other noise-cancelling circuitry that you've seen before. These are one of a kind pickups that are sure to change the mind of those who think sacrifices in tone have to be made to avoid hum.
The pickups we're trying out today are the '58 Quiet Coils which amazingly stick to the same specs as genuine 50's single coils while eliminating the 60 cycle hum. You can also check out Mojotone's '67 Quiet Coils which contain the same sparkle and chime of the classic grey bottom pickups, complete with plain enamel and low gauss Alnico magnets. Best of all, you can find both in sets or in a preloaded pickguard for a fast swap into hum-free territory. Lastly, the unique design of the Quiet Coils ensures that you won't have to worry about string spacing issues, dead spots or the magnets pulling the strings out of tune. Quiet Coils never lose their focus with big bends and their vintage output is completely compatible with your favorite gear.
What we're doing today is comparing the Quiet Coils with some of the leading hum-cancelling products as well as some genuine Fender 57/62 pickups as a baseline. All the Strats feature alder bodies with rosewood necks and the amp is a 6V6 based Mojotone Mt. Pilot 15w combo that will remain untouched during pickup swaps.

The Mojotone sounded the best of all the noiseless single coils in this demo. I did hear a slight different between them and the Fender true singles but it was very, very subtle. Probably not unlike you could get with the variation in different single coil winds. So far I have liked them in every demo I have heard.

That's the thing that drives me nuts when people criticize good noiseless pickups. "It didn't sound exactly like that single coil in the demo!" Yeah, except the entire reason that companies sell a million different strat pickups is that they all sound a little different. Listening to this demo, there's no question that it's a strat being played. And that's all that should matter with a noiseless pickup. By the time you hear it in a mix, nobody can tell between a 5.9k A5 strat pickup and a 6.5k A2 strat pickup. I think I'm going to order a set of these, they have me convinced.

@@Mark-vv1dy these Mojo tone pickups still have that Strat snap, yet are not true single coils. These give a single coil feel with just a touch warmer of a punch it seems, how could that be a bad thing? I already have a Fralin pickquard, but I would be interested in these

I've always thought is funny how the solo for Another Brick in the Wall Pt 2 was recorded on a Gibson Les Paul Goldtop directly to the Mixing PA and most people usually think that is a Strat tone.

All of them sound compressed and dead next to the non noiseless Fender pick ups to me . Best comparison video on the subject I've ever seen. Andy is a Master at demonstrating. He needs to win some kind of award for something. Always entertaining but always doing his job like no other. I've picked up and used a few licks and riffs from him over the years. And that Fender banana pudding color Fender calls white is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen in over 50 years of playing. I just had to say it. I don't care who likes it or plays one. I feel like I have to change it's diaper whenever I see it. Thank you Andy!!!!Another great video!!!!

The Mojotones do sound good. But choose the Kinman AVn MKIII? These are "aged vintage" tone. The unaged sets are the The Scoop, Impersonator 54, Impersonator 56, Impersonator Fat 50 would probably given a better comparison. From Kinman:
Aged Sound - typically denoted as AVn & SCn (Southern Cousin noiseless),
sounds and performs like gracefully aged pickups with softened attack,
no high end brittleness and slightly lowered dynamic range (low peak)
which results in earlier breaking into crunch yielding a thick &
creamy distortion when over-driven and a sweeter treble when played
    clean.
Non-aged sound - typically denoted as the Impersonator and Scoop series.
Like new vintage pickups, resists crunching under heavy pick attack.
Sounds brighter with less midrange coloration and more snappy attack
with lots of dynamic range and performs like new pickups.

Hello, thanks for your comment. I actually carefully chose the pickups we compared to and made sure they were as close to the Mojotone Quiet Coils in regards to specs. The MKIII's were the closest spec. Our Quiet Coils do actually represent an "Aged" strat pickup tone with lower Gauss vintage formulated Alnico magnets. Here are some features you may not know about...
      Quiet Coil Design Features...
-Consistent scatterwound coils for that handwound tone, sensitivity, and clarity.
-Vintage formulated Alnico magnet cores with lower Gauss levels like an aged vintage strat pickup.
-Vintage cloth covered leads for easy push-back soldering.
-Matched resonant peak frequency, inductance, and resistance of a vintage single coil.
-Vintage staggered polepieces for a traditional strat pickup look.
-No routing modifications are required to fit shallow vintage routs like the taller stacked hum-cancelling designs.
-Less than 10 parts are used to build the Quiet Coils. Like a vintage strat pickup, they are SIMPLE!

Listen to Andy Timmons' clean tone... I prefer that over a thin, glassy tone any day.. Cuts through a mix better too. Ive tried tons of hum cancelling strat pickups, including the Area 58's and didn't like them, but the Cruisers sound fantastic. Like a Strat pickup, but even better!

    • @CreamFreshCream
      @CreamFreshCream 8 років тому

True. I tried many noiseless pickups... Kinmans, DiMarzios, Fenders, GFS, Joe Bardens and many many more (love singlecoils, hate the hum). All of 'em sounded pretty solid (except for Fenders, they are toneless), but they weren't quite in the singlecoil territory. I also tried the Fishman fluence and they are really close tonevise, however they lack the dynamics of singlecoils and feel more like active pickups. Among all these the Zexcoil wins. They sound just like singlecoils and they feel like singlecoils. They are pricey, but totally worth the money. They're win win for me!
