I finally bit the bullet and spent $20 on a bag of mangosteens. They're the most delicious fruit I've ever had. Tastes like loquat and mango mixed together.
As someone who lives in the Mangosteen capital of the Philippines, I can tell you why your mangosteen is cracked and dented. It was harvested at approximately 2-3 days ago via shaking the tree, a common practice to easily harvest tons of them in Asian countries where fancy harvesting machines aren't common. When they hit the ground, they will have dents like that. And after 2-3 days, their white flesh inside that was bruised from falling will turn brown like that one that you ate. Mangosteen that was harvested using sungkit (long pole with a basket at the tip) will have no bruising even after 2-3 days and will taste better. By the way, to open the fruit without a knife, just pull the calyx (the stem with leaf-life structure at the top of the fruit). It will leave a hole where you can put your two thumbs inside and then gently pull the rind apart. It will open like an egg.
I finally got to try mangosteen for the first time and I absolutely love them! I loved the juiciness and the flavor reminded me of kiwi. I'm glad I finally got to try it.
I recently ate this in Mexico, bought it compulsively without knowing what it was! The vendor told me it was great and it was! I never did figure out what it was, until now. Thank you so much
Just found some at Whole Foods here in California. Hard shells but the segments inside seemed good. Watery, sweet, mild pleasant flavor.. One of the fruits had 2 seeds, which I'll try to sprout.
One of my present favs. Planted three plants in coorg, India. The weather here is moisty with heavy rain during monsoon. Some leaves wilted because of too much sun I think but the plants r alive and in good condition . Made some more saplings from seeds. Growing .
5:00 am Somalia...you just won yourself a dedicated new subscriber...my kids start watching your vids now...i can grow these fruit trees fast enough... Loool
They used to serve this on the ships I was on in the Navy whenever the ship resupplied while it was in SE Asia (Singapore, Thailand, etc). I never knew what they were called until now, though, because every time I'd ask the cooks what they were, they'd just shrug & say they didn't know... Which is appropriate, since it gave us mystery fruit to go with the mystery meat, lol.
Just found some at my local Asian market and was so delighted I ate the center's out of three and tore up the Rinds and brewed it like a tea by the suggestion of a local customer who was shopping there. The fruit was absolutely delicious and juicy just like you described and the tea brewed from the Rind was pretty powerful and had a bitter Edge to it. I actually think there might be caffeine in there as it seemed like I was getting a little jumpy even. Gonna sip that tea slowly... pretty bitter. Also found lychee and some odd new melons. Thank you for opening up the produce departments of these awesome stores 😀
Finally saw some at the grocery store! They're small, about the size of a Ping Pong ball. Looking forward to trying them for the first time! They are hard right now so I hope they aren't overripe. Store had Atemoya once too, almost bought it but didn't take the plunge. Saw your video on it next day and they haven't had them since :(
Update: It was hard to tell but they were all juuust ripe. Super tasty and unique, fun to eat! Only had one big seed across three fruits. Taste was a nice, strong, almost citrusy grape flavour with an almost pineapple-mango aftertaste!
I just went to our local Asian super store Ling Mei's (I think that's the name) and found a bag of these. I thought it was only $4.99 for the bag and I didn't realize but they would be over $10 once I checked out. The de was per pound. Sneaky. I wouldn't have bought them otherwise and I'm so glad I didn't realize because they are absolutely delicious. The first one I had actually was the only rotten one in my bunch, but I ate the rotten fruit anyway and it was delicious. So I fell in love with the first one that wasn't even properly edible. The rest have been great and you really can just squeeze the shell and the whole thing will come open. Easily one of my favorite fruits of all time. I'd be interested in figuring out how to brew up the shells into a tea. But it's the beginning of August and this is the first time I've ever seen them in the Asian market so people should go out and check now. As soon as I bit into it I immediately thought of you and knew I had to come and find your review! I'm like you and I don't think they taste really like anything else but my first thought was lychee.
The mangosteen is the Queen of Fruit because it's usually in season together with Durian, the King of Fruit. (Back when durians used to only have 1-2 season/year)
Weird Explorer Could have been a little over ripe, but I still enjoyed it, I bought some yellow dragon fruit and a sugar Apple that I'm excited to try to. :)
In SE Asia right now. Ive had the so-called juice flavor before as a kid...NOT THE SAME. This tastes like the juice of best tropical fruit salad you've ever had, but cloudy texture. Incredible!
I'm actually just eating this for the first time today in China, I immediately recognized the predominant flavour as something I'd had before, and after a few minutes of thinking I realized they taste like very sweet rhubarb without the bitterness, or at least the ones I have do. The texture is sort of like frozen-then-unthawed strawberries...
The last time I found one of these in California they were only available frozen. I tried one and it tasted like a mild lychee with orange and blueberry with a hint of banana.
My brain jump to lychee to but it really is a flavor all of its own. I didn't really get any notes of blueberry or orange or banana. I'd say it's really sweet but I guess it does have a tiny bit of sour edge. It's one of the best fruits I've ever had.
what you say about the fruit inside being useless isn't true. it's also full of fiber, which is what makes fruit good for you despite the high sugar content of most fruits. but what you said about the purple part being much more beneficial is definitely true.
I can't find any fresh ones, but I've found mangosteen juice and candy for sale. The juice is truly divine, so light and refreshing. Truly the queen of fruits!
"Good stuff " FOR SURE! these are one of my top ten fruits ever. Shock to find out no nutrition at all. you have the skins and ill take the segments. Btw, banned in hotels in Thailand. great vid✌👌🙌
I just tried my first mangosteen and they do taste similar to the green grapes we get in Australia, definitely not like the traditional grape flavor you get in candy or grape drink
Just tried my first mangosteen here in Australia. Just discovered we grow them here. Can't say I agree with your assessment. I found them incredibly sweet, as in too sweet, like candy. Also didn't like the texture, kind of slimy.
I love this fruit, I always make sure when I travel to South East Asia to travel during the Mangosteen season. They've only just recently started showing up in my country but usually are hard shelled.
They're like $25 per KG here... Compared to like 50cents per KG in Asia... I'd say they're kinda like Rambutan or Lychee had sex with a mango.... Like the taste of lychee but the texture of mango.
Open them by imagining "I "heart" Mangosteen" - Take mangosteen, hold it base facing- up. Make the "heart/love" sign around it; both index fingers (support/underneath) and both thumbs (pressure/above). Press down (with equal pressure) on center of base with both thumbs. When you feel it "give," it will split, then pull apart along the split.
The only way that I have seen these available here in Ca, is either canned, juiced, or frozen whole. I want to try them, but something tells me that I risk a bad first experience with the frozen.
Jared Rydelek Thanks! I will try that.. Something in the back of my mind has thus far kept me from purchasing the frozen ones, glad to know after all these years I still have some instincts that I can trust :) And believe me, I do scour the Asian markets every chance that I get. thanks again for the input,
I just had a mangosteen for the first time and had to comment! I accidentally bit into the skin and that was rly gross… But I’d say the texture is like a softer lychee and the taste is like the way orange soda tastes
+Brad Malone Yes! Just head down to chinatown and check the asian super markets. I'm pretty sure i've seen them there. They aren't always available, but when they are in season they usually will sell them in a mesh bag for like $8 or so.

oh man... tough choice. I think I'd have to say cherimoya just because I have had so many mangosteens in my life that cherimoya is more of a rarity for me.
Just tried them for the first time and I had a very mild experience too. I bought a bag of Mangosteens at Costco (California) a few days ago, cultivated in Mexico. MUCH milder than I expected, and I did not experience any grape flavors either. Kind of gelatinous like longans to me, or at least where the fruit meets the seed, it adheres to the seed similarly to how longan flesh adheres to its seed.
In India 🇮🇳 ( states Maharashtra, Kerala and Karnataka) have juices of these rinds and have it as a refreshment in summer. It has an ORAC antioxidant profile of 60,000.

Nice video, but I heard you say at one point that mangosteens are not nutritious - this is totally incorrect. Mangosteens are nutritional powerhouses - of particular interest are chemicals called xanthones - over 40 different types in a mangosteen fruit - responsible for many health benefits, antioxidant, & anti-aging effects. They are also high in vitamin C & potassium.
I finally bit the bullet and spent $20 on a bag of mangosteens. They're the most delicious fruit I've ever had. Tastes like loquat and mango mixed together.
You gave me an idea on how to spend my moneys.
It's way over priced
I disagree - I think it tastes like strawberry, banana and elderberry flowers, together.
the price of this fruit in my country is around $3-$4/kg. If you are interested I will send it from Indonesia
@@junigearx7452 It has medicinal value so it's not overpriced.

You can solve that problem by eating more mangosteens.. eventually you'll have a purple shirt.
