Russel may be a big dude, and a more athletic guy may have made up time in the movements, but man is he a good shot. Especially with a pistol. And clearly speed in movement didn't matter is this stage anyway since he got first. Awesome job.
Efficient movement and being ready to shoot sooner with less misses usually works out on stages like this with 10-25 yards of movement between each shooting location. On stages with longer distances between shooting positions, the guys that can move fast typically fair better.
SinistralRifleman I'm sure dudes in their prime would excel in things like the tiger valley match but those steady shots with the pistol after all that movement in full gear was very impressive. Along with the fast hits in the awkward positions with the rifle. Just giving respect where it's due.
When do you think the biological "prime" is of an athlete? That's what I'm referring to. I'm not saying 37 is old by any means. Or that age is an excuse to hold anyone back to achieving great skills and athleticism. But the fastest 25 year old is always going to be faster than the fastest 37 year old.
Probably - soldiers wouldn't care because it's not about time for them but about weapon-proficiency :) (exception special forces maybe that would be sent to free hostages, for them the extra accurracy can be important (if you are a bit worse shot you might kill a hostage or at least injure one and that doesn't look good - unless you have no other choice and do the "James Bond" thing and shoot a hostage through the shoulder to take out the terrorist behind the hostage))
I’m finally early enough in comments that this might get read by the creator- Karl, I want to say thank you to you and Ian for all the work you both do on InRangeTV. I’m glad that even with Ian out on expedition, you were able to film at HaH with Russel. This sounds kinda stupid, but it was only recently I convinced my brain that I could, infact afford to help support your project on Patreon. A buck a month is only 12 bucks a year, and yet it was a mental hurdle. Thanks for continuing to put out great content anyways. Also, thanks for showing your work when you give what could be unpopular opinions about gear and such, while you occasionally kill a sacred cow of mine, I’m better off for it, when I see why you have the views you have, even when I don’t “like” you conclusions. Thanks to everyone at InRangeTV for being who they are.
More point blank rifle targets..... I still laugh at the stage where Ian obliterated the paper targets with his muzzle blast thus demonstrating the futility of such an exercise.
Steel Talon prior to reading that the range doesn’t allow full power rifle, my plan had been to go t Red Oktober 2018 with my SVD. I wanted to do the gully run stage with bayonet fixed. It’s so damn long, I could easily impale each target prior to shooting it. Alas, I will use my Krink instead. My shoulder, at least, is relieved. The idea was inspired by Ian’s Krink muzzle blast run.
FYI...you absolutely DO NOT have to remove the RS Regulate mount to full field strip your AK. It is designed so that the mount can stay on when you remove the dust cover/bcg and reinstall it.
Karl, I can see that you take these matches seriously and I appreciate it, but dude, learn to lighten up or you'll pick up an early stroke. Sending this from the hospital. Keep up the good work!
Finally! An actual reason (...maybe) to use a Leupold D-EVO scope! (...especially if there exists a flip-to-the-side mount that the D-EVO can be mounted on; that way you could essentially convert it into a side-mounted optic!)
If your upper, lower and bolt are in spec, the buffer can't touch that little detent, the bolt is suppose to hold it back a little. Only when you open the upper will the buffer touch the detent. I'm not arguing that they never break, its just that something is wrong with your other parts for that to happen. Awesome job in the match by the way, the both of you. This video is much better on FULL30.
What was the feedback on on this course/section? it looked like a Pain In The Ass, but at the same time offered really cool, simulated challenges; and thanks to the reasonable time penalties, offered multiple strategies. it looked like a well thought out course
hmm curious that there was no verbal cues to alert safety clearences, such as "shooting right/left!", think that'll help in training, also in team events to keep partner aware of positions.
Do you mean from inside the tank? Everyone stays behind the firing line and the Range Officer is watching the shooter. The only time we use verbal commands in individual competitions is typically to let the RO know where we are starting on long range targets, or if we are going to back up to engage something we forgot.
This is a match points format. The fastest time in a division gets 100%. Everyone else's time is turned into a percentage from there. I'll use round numbers to make this easy. But let's say I got 150 on this stage and Karl got 200. To get Karl's percentage the fastest time would be divided by his 150/200 = 0.75.. Those percentages are then turned into points and the highest points wins. With 9 stages, there are 900 points possible at this match. For over all results it works the same way but the highest over all time regardless of division being used as that baseline. This is all done in scoring software now. Comparing scores based on percentages is somewhat more useful than total time particularly the longer the stage are.
Total Time format matches exist, like 2GACM and they are easier to calculate without software of excel formulas. Lowest time wins in that case. They do make the longer stages worth more; so if you had 4 stages and 3 were averaging ~30 seconds and one was averaging ~100, that longer stage determines the match. There is a debate about if longer stages should be worth more (I tend to think they should), but most competitors seem to prefer match points so all stages are worth the same amount of their score.
@SinistralRifleman Makes sense as to why they wanted to change it up, but still not getting how the score is determined. I noticed you had a score of 100% being in first place, so I get that part of it, but how are others scores determined relative to first position?... Is it just first place = 100% last place = 0% and even divisions between, or is the score based on + + ? So far I'd pretty much agree with you that longer stages should be worth more.
The fastest time is divided by each other shooters time to get the percentage. So like I said if I was fastest with 150 seconds and Karl got 200 seconds, to determine his percentage my 150 would be divided by his 200 = 0.75. If another shooter was 175 seconds it would be 150/175 = 0.857, If someone did 300 seconds it would be 150/300 = .50 or 50%. If everyone is really good, all percentages can be clustered together very close. If on another stage shooter A got 100 seconds as the fastest, and I got 120, and Karl Did 180 Shooter As time would be divided by ours the same way. I'd get 0.833, Karl would get 0.555. At the end all these points across all stages are added together and the person with the most points wins.
@XFourty7: Yes the percentage basically is the point value. the fastest time is 100% and gets 100 points. Using Sinistrals examples a 83.3% score would be worth 83.3 points, and so on.
Russel may be a big dude, and a more athletic guy may have made up time in the movements, but man is he a good shot. Especially with a pistol. And clearly speed in movement didn't matter is this stage anyway since he got first. Awesome job.

@@KR-bn4bg Eeee dudes in their prime???? He's 37.

"I shot all the no-shoots because I didn't care." Just like a true Spetsnaz.
Clay pigeon da comrade, they should not have been there
Can't worry about no-shoots if they're all shot
How dare those shoot targets put those no shoot targets in such danger!! THEY WILL SUFFER!

Damn! Russell Phagan destroyed that stage!
Tank is a nicely done prop. Very challenging stage.
Karl taking the Spetsnaz approach to no shoots
Russell killed that stage!
Russell Phagan made that stage look easy, totally impressed.
Wow Russell mopped the floor with this stage. Impressive on that longer pistol array.

Daaaaaamn. Russell crushed that stage. Hopefully I can make it out next year and rub elbows with the greats.

Oh man, the idea of an SVD bayonet lunatic run is glorious. I want to see something like that, damn.
anyone have a link to that?
@@Koolaidrulz21 It was one of the Red October 2016 videos.
Nice shooting. I bet Russell's a beast at house-clearing with that KE17.
Dang! That stage looked...well....hard as hell! Love the long range pistol challenge!
Love the big thonk patch Karl!
FYI...you absolutely DO NOT have to remove the RS Regulate mount to full field strip your AK. It is designed so that the mount can stay on when you remove the dust cover/bcg and reinstall it.
Russell smoked that. KE makes some quality shit and he made a good run. Even for a big dude he still puts it in.
Karl, I can see that you take these matches seriously and I appreciate it, but dude, learn to lighten up or you'll pick up an early stroke. Sending this from the hospital. Keep up the good work!
Great match nice to see the big old guys can run a match
Karl , you did fair, better luck next match. your buddy looked really good on those pistol target's.
Nice work Russell

I still can't believe how little that AK recoils, makes me really want to try that setup.
Russels patch game is fire.
Damn that is some good shooting! I would not be able to clear that at all.
those no shoots were in the matrix... they were dead already. great video!
Damn, what Russell lacks in agility he compensates with outstanding marksmanship.
If being left handed is an advantage in 2 gun, I regret my life choices.
Hostile being left handed isn’t a choice, it is a birthright. We will lead humanity into the next phase of evolution.
They say left handed people are the only ones in the right frame of mind...
Gregory Cole
Love it man.
You had to replace Ian with another lefty
I wish I was closer to these matches this looks great :(
Great shooting!!!
Jesus Christ, that Russel guy shoots really well
That's the downside to the DPP. If it's not on and you hit the on button, there is just no good/fast way to adjust dot intensity.
Russell Sempai is jamming it in
WWKD, what would Karl (Marx) do? What would Kalashnikov do? What would Karl from InRange do?
What was the feedback on on this course/section?
it looked like a Pain In The Ass, but at the same time offered really cool, simulated challenges; and thanks to the reasonable time penalties, offered multiple strategies.
it looked like a well thought out course
where does one get that thonk patch from discord on Karl?
it looks amazing
Very cool.
"with the ak, no shoots don't matter anyway"
wwGRUd?
I can imagine what GRU would do, but I doubt the range they're at would allow thermobaric rockets.
What is that patch on your chest with the messed up thinking face?
I didn't even notice that until now, jfc Karl lmao
DERPGRU
Is Karl wearing AOR2/NWUIII?
What kinda ammo was you running in the 74? Wolf or Tula? Would you be able to run 7N6 here?

yes, seems like it'll be a good habit of doing, no matter the range safety situation.
It seems like his pistol rings the steel with much more force. Why is that?
You dont need to turn off a Delta point pro, they have motion activation
Gentleman, what magnification did you use? How does the reticle design of the two different scopes figure in to it?
I'm using a Vortex Viper PST 1-6X with MRAD reticle, Karl is using a Trijicon Accupoint 1-4X.
Here is a video idea shooting in the narrow ports
AOR2 FTW!!!!
Can you guys make a video on why the score is percentage based instead of time based, and how it's determined / what it means? Thanks!

Anyone know what plate carrier Russell is wearing?
Ferro Concepts Slickster with a Whiskey Two-Four PIMPS chest rig over it. There will be a gear discussion video later.
SinistralRifleman Awesome thanks man!
I shot this stage clean but nowhere near as fast as Russel, nice job man.
This one was a tricky balance of speed and accuracy for sure!
Russel did great on that stage; how was his score overall, vs just against Trooper?
Russel was first in Trooper on the stage, 6th overall on the stage. He was also first out of everyone wearing armor.
6th overall is pretty good; I was curious where he stood outside of AT
Ummm...you don't have to take the RS Regulate mount off to remove the BCG in an AK
This one is super low and I think Karl said it wouldn't clear.
Man how do you shoot inside with just plugs😩
We love the action matches guys. Karl why don't you do your youtube solo project?
It took him almost exactly 20 seconds to assemble his gun XD
~8 seconds to assemble, then I pulled the ropes. ~3 seconds to load.
SinistralRifleman Well done! I think I counted the rope pull. My bad
That looked impossible.
omg
