Hi Marty! Thank you for your review , great as always ! ;) You know, i am the girl, who asked you, whether it is worthy of to go on a short drawing course or not. Actually, i am learning how to draw now, i found two great books , which explain the technic and how to make motives. ( Their title is : Everyone can learn, how to draw I-II , by Ute Ludwigsen Kaiser (pt 1) and Karl-Heinz Morscheck( pt.2) ) They are really useful, and i am getting better day by day :)(now i am learning how to draw landscapes and buildings) I also use this set from Faber Castell , and i love this graphite pencils , really easy to work with ,and have excellent colours. So thank you Marty again, and keep your good work please ! :) Dalma
Hi Dalma - Thank you so much for the message. I really appreciate it. It's so good to hear you are drawing and learning. It's a wonderful journey once you start it. It's such great therapy for the soul. Hope you start to post your work soon. Have a great weekend. ~Marty
So I just bought the 6 set of these it has the HB,B,2B,4B,6B,8B pencils. I like the graphite really great but it doesn't feel as smooth on the paper as my Tombow Mono Professionals. It makes crisper and more precise lines though they also feel really light weight and I like the heavier feel of my Tombows. The wood seems to be really good also. I'm trying to decide what brand I want to make into my "go to brand" I'm having a really tough time. The 9000 also has a very great transition from one grade to another but they don't seem to get super dark. I love how dark the Tombows get but it kind of seems like all the B's kind of give the same shade. I read one review for the Tombow where he said if he wanted to use Tombow he would use three a 6B a HB and a 6H to get his shade and he might be right. The Tombow also feel just super sturdy I feel like I just know they won't break when I'm using them which I also love. Guess I just need more experience but both of these brands put my Staedtler Mar lumographs on the back burner. The Staedlers are good also but these two just feel better and I dislike the 8B and 7B of the Staedtler. They feel like charcoal which I like as a medium too but charcoal is charcoal and graphite is graphite. What to do what to do? If I choose Tombow I really want the class pack, Dickblick sells them I'm glad they have that. It give a good range that you would need for drawing. I wish the Faber-Castell had a class pack for the 9000 series but I have only seen it for the GoldFabers which are inferior to the 9000's. I also like that the Tombow has a thicker graphite core than the Faber-Castell's and I'm a sucker for the black paint job of the Tombows. I also really want to try the Caran D'Ache Grafwood's but I honestly feel as their products in general are just too expensive especially if you are not making money from your works. I might just end up mix and matching use the Tombow's for the dark values and the Faber-Castell's for more precision who knows.
***** I agree with every single point you made. I love the Faber-Castell 9000's, but prefer the heavier and darker range Tombow's. The Grafwood's are also great, but if you spend your money there you won't be able to afford the other pencils. I like your approach of mixing and matching, that's exactly what I do. I like the wood of the FC's over the Tombow's, but I like the weight of the Tombow's better, just as you pointed out. I've used Staedtlers, Faber-Castell's and Grafwoods for ages and they've all been pretty great, but if I just want to doodle, I pick up a humble Ticonderoga #2, just like when I was a little kid. :-) Thanks for the detail and the great insights!!
Yes the good old trusty Dixon Black Ticonderoga a pencil of mass creation. Have you ever tried the Palomino Blackwing pencil-602 or the regular Palomino Blackwing pencils? I heard these are suppose to be some very good pencils I plan on buying some to try out from jetpens.com probably in a couple weeks.
Great video, but I think my favorite part was was "drawing the old man - I like drawing old people". I resemble that! Actually, I love it - I'm not really that old, but your audience would probably think I am.
Hi Marty, Have you ever tried the Hi-Uni Mitsubishi Graphite? It ranges from 10B- 10H. I have read some reviews on Amazon which were full of high praise, but wanted to know your opinion. They are more expensive than Faber-Castell.Mythros
Hi Marty! Thanks again for another nice review, it is so informative! I am beginning to make draws now and decided to buy the maing graphite pencils and it´s all mixed from 8B to 2H (don´t know why I did not buy a full complete set in a tin instead, hahahaha!) and I have Koh-I-Noor, Staedler and Faber Castell 9000. My question is if you know which is the difference between Koh-I-Noor graphite pencils codes 1900, 1580 and 1860? When I got home I did realize they have different codes but really don´t know why. Any clue?
+Cris Costa Hi Cris - Thanks for the question. I'm not sure exactly why the codes differ, however it might have something to do with just the exterior color, graphite quality or type. For instance the 1500 is a carpenters pencil. The 1580 may just be a variation of the carpenters pencil or it shares similar graphite or wood casing. Not much on their website about it, but you could email them if you are very curious. www.koh-i-noor.cz/en/category/graphite-pencils
Question, I plan to grab some hardcover sketchbooks have you ever used Canson Basic Sketchbook or Blick Studios Sketchbook? Also have you ever used Moleskines I was looking at review and either people hate them or love them. Some say its a quality in them they just love other say they cost way to much and your just paying for the cover because the paper is not really that great.
Hi ***** I use the Canson XL and have used the Blick Sketchbooks in the past, the Canson is better. Yes I've also used the Moleskins, I'd say they're just okay. The sketchbook I use the most (because I use mixed media like marker, paint, watercolor, ink and graphite) is the very excellent Stillman & Birn (Zeta Series) and you can find them here: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BW5G03I/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00BW5G03I&linkCode=as2&tag=owiart-20&linkId=T6LG7XQDCBYLYY36"
I think the canson is superior to the moleskine. Moleskine are also good but canson is better. If you can afford to pay a little more you could go for bee paper comany`s sketchbook. But my overall recommendation is canson good paper quality for a very good price. and even owings art has made a good video on sketchbooks which I recommend you to see.
Owings Art I ended up getting 4 ProArt hardcover sketchbooks. I got some other supplies also Derwent pencil extender pack, set of 12 Tombow Mono Professional, 2 Prismacolor Col-Erase 24 pack, and the Caran D'Ache charcoal pencil. Hopefully I have good experiences with my new supplies when they come in.
Who ever, can not realise, that these are the best pencils for drawing, then he shouldn't share his opinion, to avoid mislead other new people,to the drawing world. PS If you own a Rapid Pro 2mm, which come with tip woble, cut the wood out of 9000 and use that lead. It fits perfectly which eliminates the wiggle, providing more precision to the pencil! (Draws better, writing looks more beautiful too!)
i'm not a fan o the lumograph series because of the 7b and 8b being mixed with carbon, here in brazil grafwood are very expensive, what would you rate toison 1900 against grafwood and Fc9000? have you ever tested bruynzeel design 8815? i can get em on the cheap here, same price as toison 1900, by the way, thabks for the response
Of all the pencils you mentioned, the FC 9000 are excellent in my opinion, although the Grafwood are the very, very best. The Toison are good, but not are good as the FC's. Thanks.
Owings Art im quite suspicious of FC 9000 cause they are made here in brazil, and i reaally doubt they use the same lead as the ones that they export to europe, and they are ridiculously cheap here, i Just cant believe them to be the same as the ones in europe while being the cheapest artists pencils to buy
Hi marts. I know this is a bit over, but do you have old sets that you are not using anymore? can i asked you to just donate it to me. hehe. can't afford any set right now. anyways new subscriber here. I am really glad that i got here in your channel i learned some new ideas.
Hi Jem Jem - I already donate what I don't use to local schools and poor children right here where I live. Do you know that you can contact the manufactures and producers and ask them to sen you samples? They often give away samples. Good luck and take care. ~Marty
Aye, I just noticed you did two more reviews today, totaling to three videos. You are on a roll today, sir! Those pencils look lovely. I believe your words on these pencils since FC generally does make good quality products.
Hi ArtOfRavenD Thanks for the note and for checking out the video. Yes, these FC's are really good and worth the little bit of extra money in my opinion.

Yes indeed I have and they are pretty great. I love using them, but yes, they are a bit costly.

Thanks for your kind reply! I´ll do that then. Thanks!
That pencil case only cost like 5 Dollars on Philippines But I’m wondering which is the better option one The Mechanical one or the wooden one?
I really like your videos! Have you tested the Caran d'Ache grafwood pencils?

hi, wich would you like more, koh i noor 1900, faber castell 9000, staedtler lumograph, caran d ache grafwood?
Caran d'Ache are the best, but Staedtler are the best value. ~Marty

I use the ones made in Brazil and they are quite good. :-)
do you prefer drawing with wood pencils or mechanical??
+lura garcia Wood for sure. I do use a Faber-Castell 9400 Lead Holder for most of my light pencil work though and I like it a lot.
How are those compared to staedtler's mars ergosoft and lumograph series?
+Chan Hien They're excellent pencils. I still like the lumograph best though. - marty
Great to know! I wonder if you could make reviews on the mars ergosoft 150 series.
Chan Hien Maybe one day. :-)
Also what pencils do you recommend for shading statue (Gypsum specifically)? The new lumographs black 100B seems interesting enough.
Chan Hien Hi Chan - Not sure what you mean. You want to duplicate gypsum?

oh thats so good of you and very kind. i think i would try to contact manufacturers and hope for luck. :)
anyways thanks for the reply.
What does mean 9000? Is it important?
It's not important, just a designation number.
dua h yang mana sih
Set ini mengandungi 2H dan ia adalah pensil yang baik. Ia mempunyai kekerasan yang betul dan menarik baik pada semua kertas.
