    In this video I demonstrate why you should use ND filter, explain the challenges of using ND filters on the DJI Air 3, and then test the Freewell Split ND Pack for the Air 3 in areas like color cast, sharpness, exposure matching, etc.

    I've had the same set for about a month and really love it. Pretty genius tbh. Adds even more value to the split camera system and prevents constantly having to land to adjust. Thanks for sharing.

    I recently bought another Freewell pack that had an PL built into the ND Filters and have a feeling I bought something I don't need as I discovered you have to manually adjust it based on the angle of the light. So I have a question, would it be sufficient to go for NDs only and kind of 'forget' the polarizers for drones?

  • @gule8693
    @gule8693 6 місяців тому +1

    @2:05 when switching to 3x zoom seems the MM value drops -1.7 (so under exposed) with the same settings. Guess depends also whats is in the background (with 3x zoom more darker backgroud due to trees i.s.o. the sky))

    • @flyingfilmmaker
      @flyingfilmmaker  6 місяців тому

      Exactly! The exposure meter just reads the average of the whole scene which is heavily influenced by what is included in the shot. So even though the exposure is the same, it shows as being much darker because there is no sky in the frame with the 3x zoom. That's why I use the histogram (which I briefly explain how to use in my Air 3 settings video) instead of the exposure meter to judge the proper exposure.

    DJI does have a split ND filter kit for the Air 3 with different light transmission to compensate for the different aperture size (per DJI: Light Transmission Size: 13.4 mm [medium tele camera] 12.4 mm [wide-angle camera]). It's only an 8, 16, 32, and 64 though, so kind of limited.

    There is a color cast with these filters and it shows in the video. I'm the guy who had mail corresponding with freewell and highlighted the issue that the two lenses have two different stops. A month later they contacted me to tell me they've made these filters and naturally I ordered them.
    My biggest concern with them is actually color cast, they have a purple hue that needs to be sorted and it's the most prominent when the sun is visible in the shot. I love that they listened to me and produced these split filters but the purple hue makes me buy DJI's or PolarPro's instead

    Thank you for the video!
    Total newbie question: if I record videos in 10bit D-Log-M mode (so a flatter profile), do I still need to use ND filters? Will they not "paint" my flat profile with shades of pink / purple (which is the tint of the filters) ?

    • @flyingfilmmaker
      @flyingfilmmaker  3 місяці тому +1

      Doesn't matter if you're using D-LOG! The filters show up pink on camera because of their antiglare coating, but they don't affect the color of the light coming through them or the shots from your drone. Check out my video on the best Air 3 settings and it should give you a good place to get started. 👍🔥

      @@flyingfilmmaker So I have just flied the DJI Air 3 with the ND filters and the footage looks fantastic!
      However, I tried the Mastershots feature and the video quality is pretty bad. Not sure what happened or if that is expected. It looks like it's being recorded in 1080p with no D-log profile. I am glad I didn't only rely on that feature and recorded some footage myself (with the hesitancy of a beginner though).

    I initially purchased the Polar Pro's. I sent them back. Must have been a bad batch because they would not seat fully (Air 3). I purchased the Freewell's instead because the Polar Pro's were out of stock and I could not replace them for the same (B&H). I'm partial to Polar Pro filters so really surprised all 4 filters shared the same problem. The Polar Pro's were made of aluminum and seemed heavy duty. The Freewell's are more like the the one that came attached to the drone at time of purchase. Not sure of the weight difference (Polar Pro vs Freewell) but I would bet the Polar Pro's weigh more?

    • @flyingfilmmaker

    • @flyingfilmmaker

      Plain ND. NDPLs need to be adjusted depending on what direction the light is coming from to get the polarization effect, which you can't really do while the drone is in the air.

    Just so people know PolarPro makes these type of split filter as well and they're called the "Shutter Collection" and a few other brands also makes these split filters. It's not just Freewell but they were the first to release split filters on the market though.

      @@Robbe1984 no, PolarPro also makes one and there's at least two other brands as well which i've seen. @@skrotfiske That's actually a good point! Unfortunately, nowhere on the product page does it say anything about split strength. And I can't find the information anywhere besides the video you linked here. So I missed it when I was researching for this video (I looked at the Polar Pro ones and was surprised they didn't have any split NDs). If they had just included that detail on the product page I would have probably bought the Polar Pro ones instead of Freewell. 😏

    Think people want to know more about when to use them. Yet you only talked about blurring.
    I for one am not interested in whether or not their is a slight blur, as the eye has a natural way on
    only being able to focus on one point.
    I do however recommend them for their main use in cutting down glare and reflections in order to get
    more bit depth for lighter areas especially on sunsets and water and general contrast.
    Normal landscape shots will be a touch less hazy and that's not a bad thing either.

    • @flyingfilmmaker
      @flyingfilmmaker  4 місяці тому +1

      They do't cut down on reflections or glare. That's what polarizer ( or ND + PL) filters do. Also, filters don't affect bit depth which is a function of the image sensor, image processor and recording format and codec. Really the only reason to use ND filters is to lower your shutter speed.

      That's not a problem with the filters. That's some kind of a glitch in Resolve or a video encoding error. Try making a new project in Resolve and re importing the footage. Or restarting resolve if you haven't tried that. 👍

    Sorry guy,,, but you can't say that those specific filters are better then the rest,,, if you haven't tried any of the others... Doesn't work that way,, and it's a known fact that Freewell Filters will give your gimbal an Overload warning in 6 months of using them.....

    • @flyingfilmmaker
      @flyingfilmmaker  6 місяців тому +25

      IDK if you watched the video, but these are the only ND filters for the Air 3 that have a different ND strength for the wide angle and telephoto cameras, which is a huge upgrade over just having one filter strength for both cameras. So assuming that these filters are high quality which I tested and found to be the case, they are going to be better than any filter that don't have two different ND strengths. Plus I have no idea where you're getting your "well known fact" about Freewell filter causing a gimbal overload warning after 6 months. To start with, to my knowledge items don't magically get heavier over time... Plus I've used Freewell filters for much longer than 6 months, and never had a gimbal overload error.
