    Many true words spoken, Gordon. I think I speak for all your following in saying that we just enjoy the videos when they come and the frequency is not the most important. It is you, your wise words and most of all, the beautiful world around you that you cycle in that matters.

      Thanks Neil. I like this format of 'accompanied ride video' and I don't want to stray too far into 'dear diary' vlogging or reviews/opinion pieces from the back bedroom, which seem to be popular with a lot of channels. It's probably quicker and easier but I don't think it ages well. The only drawback with this format is when I'm not doing ultra-scenic rides there's not much to film.

    How very true. I was riding back from York to Leeds today ( Sunday) in a block headwind and resenting every pedal stroke. Then I suddenly thought - I’m fit enough to be outside riding. It’s sunny, warm - what the hell have I got to complain about. It’s about perspective. Thanks for the wise words 😀👍

      Thanks Jonathan. The last time I was over there, in August '23, I was caught in an almighty downpour near the Marston Moor monument and found myself in a dark mood for a few miles until I experienced a similar epiphany to yours. 'What a great experience' I thought, pedalling through Collingham to Scarcroft grinning like a Cheshire Cat.

    Inspirational words 🙂, i've been missing your video's, glad to see you out again...and you missed the rain?, got the soaking of my life just east of Leeds today 🌧😄.
    You're right, it is easy to get swept up in the strava/social media world, I have a tendency to compare myself to other cyclists and feel that I should be much faster/fitter/slimmer than I am ....when really I am doing much more than the average person sat on a sofa watching telly. Looking forward to future videos 🚴

      Thanks Claire. It was hammering down with a few thunderclaps when I was editing the video c. 1pm. Monsoon worthy rain!
      I'm sure social media of all types is designed to provoke strong emotions and unsettle us.
      We can get caught comparing ourselves to a stream of 'Greatest Hits' and it's very hard to win or simply feel good under those circumstances.
      You're spot-on about the difference between what you can do on a bike and the average person - there's no comparison.
      I shoot less footage with the hand-held camera and that greatly reduces editing time (1:40 for this one), so I'll hopefully still catch a few summer rides for the channel.

      Thank Gerard. I've always tried to keep this channel centred on the landscapes and the joy of cycling through them, rather than veering into equipment, performance etc. That it can serve in an inspirational capacity is wonderful and always gives me a lift. The pre-Christmas Sub Two Series seemed to hit the mark with a lot of viewers & I'll probably return to that concept over the next few months when time is tight.

    Don't know about 'stravanoia', but I came off strava because I got to know the key segments on my regular rides, and was just not able to relax and have just a 'nice ride' anymore because I couldn't help but push on those known segments and it was starting to take the fun out of my regular rides.

    • @clippingin1593
      @clippingin1593  2 місяці тому +2

      I think what you describe feeds into this sense of 'data overload' which influences or overpowers the rides.
      Once upon a time we had basic cycle computers with average speed and we knew our best times for certain hills via stopwatch or heart-rate monitor, but now every ride is broken down into segments and our rides become a chain of mini time-trials. As you say, it makes it hard to potter.

    Good to hear that you hadn't ran away to the circus Gordon, or worse! Had wondered if you were ok or not.
    For me, I only ever compete with myself these days and my standards. I couldn't give two monkeys what others think of my ride stats. As an extremely competitive youngster it's just the remnants from those days.
    I am happy with 8-10 hours of ride time a week on a good week! That is what I aim for.

      The social media/public-posting of ride data is an interesting topic which I keep bumping into online. Reading comments on GCN videos advising people how to break 30km/h on 'normal rides', you can see how important it is to so many.
      For the most part they're not racers but they're still swimming in performance data. They spend lots on 'fast kit' and they're reluctant to use a heavy/slow training bike because it 'slows them down'.
      I've come to terms with being slow but that's because a few years ago I'd said goodbye to cycling after the hip break, so it's all a bonus.

    Love getting up to Buckstones, it's not far from hone for me, so the last time I went I took the long cut, through Brighouse up to Mytholmroyd, then Cragg Vale, over the tops with more climbs and treat myself to ice cream eventually at Buckstones car park. Totally agree about the multitude of stats now available, they start to take away the pleasure of the ride.

      It's great cycling country, Jason. We're lucky to have these hills on our doorsteps. I'm moaning a bit in this video because I'm under the cosh time-wise but there are all kinds of adventures to be had in 40-50 miles up there.
      Your route is a belter, there's one video on here from April '23 where I went over Queensbury - Keighley - Laneshaw Bridge - Herders - Cock Hill and then followed what I'm guessing is your Cragg - Hollingworth Lake - New Hey - Denshaw route. Inspiring countryside.

    I think that your bike would find it way up Bucktones without you on it lol
    40 or 50 mile rides are about right, as you say otherwise its massively time consuming and you have to spend half your life on your bike
    When you did your 'festive 500' (wow! unbelievable) I was completely snowed under with work and it rained every weekend, so its important not to worry about what others are doing, as you say. My distance aggregates will be massively down this year.

    • @clippingin1593
      @clippingin1593  2 місяці тому +1

      Exactly that, Adam. I've heard of people deliberately catching trains and riding home with tailwinds just to spice up the average speed!
      It's a human trait to locate by making comparisons, but when it starts to undermine us - as I've read about in so many running & cycling blogs - then we need some kind of reset.

    • @ramsden35
      @ramsden35 2 місяці тому +1

      I do think there is some self comparison causing this, but that does carry over to commenting on other people’s rides/achievements. My ride to work is flat and some decent descents, and invariably down wind. I’ve received comments (from now deleted followers, hence why I only have two haha) like “you’ll be slower on the way home” and “wind assisted I see”. As if I’d automatically assumed I now think my average speed is 20mph haha.

    • @clippingin1593
      @clippingin1593  2 місяці тому

      @@ramsden35 It strikes me as an elbows-out way of commenting on a ride. Some people assume that all posts on the internet are directly addressing or even challenging them, so they're easily triggered into those kinds of 'defensive put downs'.
      I get the occasional odd comment on CI but a few years ago when I had a music channel I'd attract all kinds of remarks intended to 'put me in my place' or snuff out what they thought was boasting.
      I think your commute rides are tremendous - I used to do 12 miles each way and that's not easy with a day's work in the middle.

Everything from wanting the products or services on display to feeling profoundly inferior to the 'examples' we're presented with. Ever-present data only adds to the comparison process.

      The weather forecast looks better for the start of September. Let's hope they're correct.
      When I use the chest camera then I generate a lot of raw footage, which I have to review and edit, and the video production time goes through the roof.
      With the hand-held camera I only shoot a fraction of the footage and I use almost all of it, so it's an easier job stitching the videos together. I prefer using the chest-camera and including fast descents and steep climbs, but I don't always have 4-5 hours of spare time for the video.
      It's a balancing act.

  • @LakeDistrictcyclist
    @LakeDistrictcyclist 2 місяці тому +1

    Love the videos, love the channel but I understand exactly what you are saying, I’m struggling to get content out with 5/6 hours of editing plus the extra hours added on to your ride for b roll and stuff for UA-cam to give you £2.50 a month, just struggling to find the time

    • @clippingin1593
      @clippingin1593  2 місяці тому +1

      I've seen a gradual process where video production rapidly expands to fill any available time, which makes it difficult when spare time is thin on the ground. Whether it's the channel holder's own creative ambition or expected 'production values' from an audience, it all absorbs time.
      You're in a different position with 10,000+ subscribers but there comes a point, regardless of revenue, where you've got to look after yourself and fit things around your limitations and restrictions.
      I'll be doing shorter, back-to-basics hand-held stuff for a few months to slash that 4-5 Hrs down to sub-2 Hrs.
      You get the occasional person expecting BBC production values from spare bedrooms but the majority of regulars who enjoy the content and warm to your personality will understand the limitations and ebb and flow of spare time.
      Reading through the comments on this video was very encouraging.

Initially I bought 'Black Iridium Polarising' - there are a couple of videos about it from last July & September - and I was so impressed that I bought the clear shield.
      I used the clear lenses for a full West Yorks Winter and they've been superb with hardly any of the steaming or raindrop related vision problems of my previous Bolle system.
