- Can a complete beginner cyclist ride 30 miles (48km)? It may not sound a long way to the most seasoned cyclists but it can be a daunting task for a novice. So, back by popular demand is our beginner Harriet, who joins Manon for her first significant bike ride. How will she fare in her latest challenge?

A lil bikepacking adventure?! :)
Sign her up. We want a full Harriet series. Zero to hero. We’ve all been there and it’s magical to watch somebody go through that process

@@sravanvijayan1864 hahahaha what? Agree on mate or agree to you mate 😅
Right. Id love to see them trainer her into a racer by next summer or if they helped her do her first century that would also be awesome.
"I'm a warrior, b%tch!" Love Harriet's enthusiasm. And she's having fun. That's the most important thing. Hope to see more of her and Manon. Go, Girls!
When I hear warrior I think of that cartoon show making fun of fleece Johnson lol
haha, I instantly became a fan at that point
Hahaha Classic!
I like that they didn't bleep it later on.
@Colin Deal it has a comma, it’s a saying.
It’s easy to forget that we were all Harriet when we started cycling. I remember feeling so proud of myself the first time I was able to drink from my bottle without having to stop 😀 #TeamHarriet
I totally forgot that just 2-3 years ago I also struggled to do a few miles. This video really threw me back to the beginning!
Maybe y'all were like her but I actually had a childhood when I grew up

@@lvloneymaker24 More or less what I was about to write :D I can't remember learning to take my hands off the handlebar or standing up on the bike since I was probably 6-8 years old when I first did these things...

bloody hell what a lovely experience, thank you gcn. i can't wait for the next one

@@gcn if my butt ever recovers from this ride, challenge considered
Well done Harriet. Enjoyed watching this one. Next challenge on a starter bike will be great. I fear you've been spoiled on that Pinnarello!
Get a decent Chamois cream Harriet it will help massively. It would be great to see how you progress if you get into it.
hi Harriet ur true one
Harriet getting into cycling is the most exciting content GCN has produced in a while. THIS is what cycling should be. Sharing good time, with good friends, and getting more people on bikes. Harriet, coming from an experienced cyclist, you have been doing a phenomenal job. Not many people will ever do 30 miles in their lifetime. You should be proud of yourself, and I hope you continue riding. This is such a heartwarming experience.
Manon is such a great riding partner too. Such a good advocate for new cyclists to have a riding partner like you.
this was lovely to read thank u 🥺☺️
@@HattieHaha idooooooool
@@HattieHaha Harriett is now a superstar 😂😂👍🕺🏽
Harriet is slowly becoming one of us 🥰. Gotta love her vibes. More Harriet please!
ONE OF US! ONE OF US!
I'm glad gcn finally realized what a beginner cyclist is.
I've always found 30 miles to be my no training needed distance. I can sit on the couch all winter and come out of the Gate with a 30 mile ride. It's hard but doable.
With a café stop in the middle, for sure!
Yes, and being properly set up makes a huge difference.
@@jbratt I do a lot of 30 and 45 mile organized rides each year. A staggering amount of people come out on rusted bikes not adjusted properly. Boy do they suffer
@@brianluck84 And because they came unprepared, they hate it and never come again: if they'd have rented a proper bike they'd have loved it and bought a real bike when they went to return their rental...
It is not the legs but the ass for me 😂
She is as raw and unfiltered as a young child - nothing but pure truth comes out of her mouth. I can imagine she is so relatable to beginner cyclists.
"When you keep going... you're just one with the bike eventually." Exactly, Harriet. Exactly that 😌👌 Getting into what it's all about really.
Harriet, you are an international super star now! Greetings from Kentucky, we love watching your progress and improvements. Manon is a wonderful mentor.👏
I totally understand her excitement. Good for her! Keep it up!
Two years ago I started cycling and went for a 15 mile ride. I bonked half of the way on a small climb. Now I'm doing 100 miles rides with no problems. It's amazing how the body adapts if you give it time and patience.
Thank you so much for this Manon and Harriet. I'm a beginner cyclist too and can't yet take a drink whilst riding, can only do a couple of pedal strokes standing and I have my hands on my brakes too. I feel really self conscious riding here because I only see very serious cyclists. I appreciate that you allowed yourself to be vulnerable Harriet; to allow us beginners to feel encouraged ❤ I managed to ride 37km today and had to nap! I really hope that this introductory content continues and I'd love to see how Harriet progresses. Maybe some beginner skill content (riding without a hand/s, standing whilst riding, how to go about hills etc). Thanks again, happy cycling ladies 😊
hey sarah! that's so nice to read, i'm glad you enjoyed watching me out of my comfort zone hahaha! 🥰 it's easy to feel discouraged when everyone else seems very serious but us beginners have got to just keep going regardless! i wish us both luck in our cycling journeys hehehe 🚴♀️
What Harriet said ☝ We would love to create more beginner friendly content! What should we challenge Harriet to next? A bit of bike packing maybe?
Love this! I'm a beginner and most I've done is 23km, slowly building it up, but hills are a killer!
Thanks Rachel! Keep slowly building up your fitness and you'll soon find the hills slowly become easier
same, i'm a mountain biker but i also bike on roads with my road bike, i have no problems with long distances on flat surfaces but i've never managed to get used to hills even though i've been cycling for quite a long time
I am just coming back from 2 years pause. So I am a beginner again. Going up is easy and not scary at all, just drop in the easiest gear and don’t fall asleep. If the only goal is to go up and time is irrelevant, just enjoy. I am still terrified of descending.
Sit back, spin. I'm 53, asthmatic, 87kg. I manage it!
Also, if you have to get off the bike and push it up, there is no shame in it. We've all done it.
Well done Harriet.. GCN should make a series of your progress, training etc clip less pedals make a great difference but their is a learning curve or maybe a series of you showing uk cycling routes or gravel routes 🤩👍🚴
“I’m a warrior B….h”. 😂 love it.
Would make for great GCN merch with the earnings going into Harriet's first own road bike ╰(*°▽°*)╯
Perfectly timed - watching this as I eat my breakfast before setting out on my longest ride yet as a total roadie noob, with my lovely partner (who is a road cyclist). Thank you Harriet, you've inspired me :) (I have yet to be able to take my hands off the bars 🤣)
Well done, hope u had a lovely enjoyable ride today
It's great to hear you're getting into road cycling Miriam! Let us know how you get on with you ride
Thanks! It was a great ride - lovely weather, lovely scenery :) I'm enjoying cycling so much and it's lovely to see content about beginners.
Harriet you are great! 🤩
I went for my first road bike ride this morning. I definitely wasn’t as graceful as Harriet. I came off and broke my bike 😂🩹 love the content GCN, keep it coming! I could clearly use a tip or two 👍
@@Oddlysatisfyingandasmr I hope your bike is fixable and you are back cycling soon. Keep going, it get's better and better and the joy increases by a lot. The odd "not clipping out of the pedal in time" might occur a few times in the beginning but it happens to the best.
As somebody who hasn’t cycled in years (since having a significant ankle injury following an accident), I found this very humbling, wholesome and inspirational for those who are not physically able to push back to back KOMs or hit those century rides.
Thank you for the content!! Looking forward to watching more :)
Thanks for the comment, you can do it!
More Harriet please! Perhaps a bike fit to be more comfortable when taking on a bigger challenge eg. 50 miles?
get the woman some cleats at least!
@@thetmac12 why? so she can be terrified and hurt herself falling over?
The bike frame looked lovely and small. I wish the more affordable bikes came that small. Perhaps she just needed a shorter bike stem so that she could relax her arms.
@@amandajane8227 I think her saddle might just be too low. She needs to lean forward more and maybe use a narrower handlebar. A bike fit would be a great idea
She definitely doesn't look comfortable on the bike, and it appears to be so twitchy which I guess is what you get from a 'money no object' race bike. GCN should source her something more relaxed, maybe one of the Ribble gravel bikes.
My fiancée got her first bike last month and joined me yesterday on a 50km loop. About 20kmh average speed, a reasonable coffee and cake stop half way through, and she returned feeling strong. I think it's worth planning and taking it easy, thinking about hydration and nutrition, and taking breaks - but it's definitely doable.
I can still remember my 1st month into cycling. I always dismounted and pushed my bike on 2% gradients and putting ice on my legs after rides.
This! I'm looking forward to the day I make it all the way up some of the climbs I'm currently pushing. And boy do my legs ache
Excellent! More of this! Harriet and Manon are a great team.
Two years ago I started my Cycling Journey. My first ride was 20 KM and I was so exhausted. This summer I rode at least one ride with 100 km+ every week. Three weeks ago I did my longest ride at 320 KM. Never thought this possible, when I started.
Another great Harriet comment that made me laugh out loud: "oooh, this looks posh". As she progresses as a cyclist, I think Harriet's style and personality will continue to make her compelling GCN viewing. Got to commend her too, for wanting to try her long ride on a "regular bike". All I can say is, give us more!!!
Absolutely heartwarming. ❤️ Manon, can you see the people at the custom paint company again? I guess Hariett deserves a proper „Pinarelli“ with exactly that written on the frame.
Of all the amazing and informative videos on GCN, this has to be my favourite. So heartwarming and inspirational. Just goes to show how cycling reqlly is for everyone. Well done Harriet, and well done coach Manon! 👏🏼
Thanks Adam, glad you enjoyed it!
That was a big ask to complete a 30 mile ride as a beginner. Well done Harriet, I hope you enjoyed the whole experience including the aching muscles afterwards. It's all part of the process. Well done Manon for the gentle encouragement and hope you both can make more of such rides and friendship.
It takes guts to do all the “noob” things in front of a camera (like lifting one hand off), we have all been there but usually get to practice and make our mistakes in private first… respect ✊🏼
"When, you keep going, it's like you're just one with the bike eventually... it's just great." That line actually gave me chills. Also, Manon's finger nail game is always on point. Respect.
Harriet is great! And loved seeing Manon be so supportive and encouraging without being condescending... really wonderful sense of mentorship + camaraderie. Just wonderful!
Harriet is charming and she has good guidance from good mentor on her maiden long ride. 👍🏻💪🏻
This is the first GCN video my partner has watched and enjoyed from start to finish. I think it's even made her think that she can actually cycle further than her brain tells her she can cycle. I can feel a 20 miler coming on 👍
Such a beautiful person, inside and out. Energetic and lovely, definitely need more videos with Harriet! She's an inspiration!
Wow, what a coincidence. I just finished this year's Bike The Drive in Chicago and they had a 30 miles challenge. And noticed a lot of people where quite proud of there medal. As for me well it was just a typical Sunday ride. Gave me fond memories of beginner me just 2 years ago almost passing out on a 16 miler.
Well done Harriet!
The Cafe Ride are the bestest rides, a casual roll for 60-90mins to an eatery/cellar door/heck even take a small picnic somewhere scenic, and then return. No rush, no fuss, pay as much attention to the surrounds as to the bike.
#NextChallenge Might I suggest the Parkland Basics to help build confidence with bike handling, operation plus the little tips and tricks for new cyclists to try to make habitual things?
Slow speed balance and handling, hill starts (up and down), stopping to a halt (whether flats or clipless. #Routines), awareness and simple signalling, preparing to restart when stopping...
Great job Harriet I love those kinda rides myself. Manon is doing a great job of encouraging you to try new skills on a bicycle. This reminds me of something I did while in the U.S Navy. A friend wanted to get into cycling so I helped them start out. We started at 10 miles a day and proceeded to do longer distances when they where ready. Keep up the good work and stay safe out there.
Brings me back to my earliest rides. I didn't realize you were supposed to hold the bars anywhere but the drops. We all start somewhere
Nothing quite as joyful as watching somebody's excitement about learning something new or discovering they are more capable than they thought. Harriet and Manon are awesome, and this was just brilliant!
Welcome back, Harriet. I watched the entire video with a smile until the end. Harriet is very funny and very natural. Especially on Pinarelli bike edition 😁
"One with the bike". She gets it already. Wonderful seeing new riders get the joy of cycling. Hope to see more. Perhaps her full progression to avid cyclist.
Started cycling 2 years ago and just upgraded a couple of months ago to a road bike and loving it so much more. 20 or 30 mile runs are now the norm although I've done 50. I've just turned 63. Well done, Harriet!!!
Great effort Harriet, and nice video CGN. I still remember the day I did my first 50km ride. An old & experienced folk cycled with me which was super helpful for building my confidence. When I got home that day, I was excited and very surprised by my body's capabilities.
putting a beginner through that is a big challenge. I can't remember my fist first 50km, but I can remember when I rode the fist 50 km with my girlfriend. And on her first 90 km ride the cursing increased in the end a bit, but she loved it. Harriet needs more screen time!
Getting more and more into long distance cycling recently. Did my first 40+ mile ride today, 44 to be exact!
Absolutely loving it
👍🏼
Clicpless pedals next! Then the world! Harriet needs to be in more videos, watching a cyclist grow is so fun and we have all been there!
Seeing Harriet achieve this is inspiring, and it brings back so many great memories of my "firsts" on a bike. That feeling of accomplishment is addictive. I hope we see more of Harriet on the channel
Love Harriet’s attitude and fun outlook, also really like the chemistry between her and Manon. Definitely more Harriet please!
Finally catching up on my gcn videos after intense fall gardening & cycling. OMG Harriet you are super at taking on challenges! I can't believe how you took on this challenge. I would never have been up to riding nearly 50 km when I was at your level of experience! Manon, I am a retired Elementary Teacher and you are a natural! Never condescending, always encouraging, setting realistic but definitely stretching goals. What a team you are! It is a joy to watch you grow into your cycling self Harriet! Such great attitudes both! More of this excellent content please and kudos to you both!
Great video. Well done Harriet. As an experienced cyclist I had forgotten just how terrifying it can be doing things on the bike which I take for granted.
Go girl. A great find GCN. Wonderful to see the confidence build. Hope we see more from Harriet and Manon over the next year. Need to get Jenny "say something grumpy" Graham to join in sometime. What a hoot that will be.
Good effort & nice to see Harriet is confident enough to start getting used to letting the bars go & get out of the saddle. That's hopefully the start of a lot of lovely rides!
These are great. We need more episodes with Harriet. So much enthusiasm.
I absolutely love her! I really hope Harriet becomes a regular. I needed this today. I'm not feeling well and can't get motivated to ride. This got me motivated to go get on my bike.
The furthest I've ever ridden in a day is about 15 miles (2x7 and a bit miles)... so good on her! 🙂
So today is Sunday... what's your excuse?

Bravo Harriet!!! 30 miles is an incredible accomplishment for someone who doesn't ride regularly. Good to hear you enjoyed yourself and are looking to continue to ride. Manon, kudos to you for choosing a route that would build Harriet's confidence and for being a supportive riding buddy. Wonderful video!
This was a wonderful video! By the end, I realized I had this huge smile on my face listening to Harriet. She is to be congratulated on being game to try the adventures you set before her. While I have no idea for the next challenge you set before her, I will undoubtedly be watching.
She is a natural, you definitely need to bring her back. Is so good to have a perspective of some one like her. Everything we see online is professionals etc etc. Thank you GCN for doing this. Good job!!!!
Cracking job by her! Awesome. And the ride looks really cool. Maybe one day I'll do it myself.
My furthest so far ist 83km on my own which was hard but finishing the ride was a great feeling.. hope Harriet keeps rolling :)
Incredibly well done, Harriet! When I started cycling a few years back I could maybe do 10km and I was overtaken by everyone. Kids and their grandparents. I remember when I planned my first long ride. Something like 36km. I was so dead and so glad to see the train to take me home...where I promptly forgot to turn Komoot off so my average speed was pretty imressive and the ride somewhat longer. Lol. I think what remains is the joy of what Harriet aptly described as feeling one with the bike.
What a fun video. More Harriet please! Try teach her a group ride with a slow group
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! And that's a great idea
"... you're one with the bike, eventually. And, oh, it's so great." I remember that feeling. I've been riding consistently for only about 4 years and there are so many different moments that feel like that. Thank you for reminding me.
Congratulations and well done. Now you know how I feel when I get to a place that seemed far yet doable on a bike. It's a great feeling of accomplishment.
Well done! I am just about to take up cycling again after a 50 year layoff (67 tomorrow). Have done the easy bit, bought my bike, bought and fitted all the accessories. Now to get on to a flat cycle track to get started again. Hoping to get a lot of weight off, help my blood sugar numbers and get some semblance of fitness again.
Good on her for trying her first big ride. 🤘🏻
Faster together, stronger than you think. Great job, Harriet! You’re just going to get better and better with every ride. And Manon did an awesome job supporting and encouraging you throughout. May you have many miles ahead of you to ride!
I love those types of paths for cycling away from cars.....but most friends with road bikes refuse to go on them but I'm fine with my gravel bike. I think Harriet would love a 1x11 speed gravel bike 👍👍👍
Those paths drive me nuts: not made for road bikes. But yes, I road them all the time as a kid.
Had a smile on my face the entire video! Harriet is great and Manon is a wonderful coach!
Luv this series as a beginner I relate
Go Harriet! Good to see her again, she really has the right attitude that makes her great for video's like this. A great video to show friends that want to ride bikes but are sorta ashamed about the fact that they can't go fast, do 100+ km rides, are a bit wobbly/insecure on the bike and so on that it's quite normal to start out like that. Lets hope GCN and Harriet wanna keep this going for a while to see her grow at it. :)
I think that a professional bike fit would be the kindest thing you could do for her, those arms must be a few inches longer by now, and she looks about ready to slide off the front of that saddle. I think the handling would be improved massively
It's about the posture. Manon and Harriet are more or less the same height, but Harriet isn't used to the race geometry, so she tries to have the body in the same posture having to reach for the handlebar instead of leaning into it.
I think the body can get used to it pretty fast.
saddle too low
@@shinobi111782 probably is but that's a side effect of unfamiliarity and discomfort with a bike. Let Harriet get happier with her bike first I'd say.
@@lmaoroflcopter can agree on that.
I've been doing biketrips with kids and teenagers (300km stretched over 5 days) for quite some time now and although I of course know about the importance of the right saddlehight in terms of efficiency, i also noticed, that many, who are not that used to riding, find it way more comfortable and easier to control their bike with the saddle lowered just a bit.
@@lmaoroflcopter aslong she is riding thats all good :)
New cyclist here and absolutely love the positive vibe this video gave me. I've only managed 15 miles thus far. Truly an inspiration you are Harriet
Hats off to Harriet! The first longer rides are the hardest. Also the reach on her bike seems a bit extensive for my taste doesn't it? Especially because she's a beginner...makes the bike a bit wobbly
Ya, they're a bit of a reach for her aren't they. Maybe now that she's done a couple good rides they could do a bike fit video 😉.
At first, I dismissed this video. What would I learn from it? But I re-watched, and obviously being in a different mood, it has become one of my favorite GCN videos. What I've realized is, I USED TO BE LIKE THIS. And as I thought of this, I came to realize how far I've come and how much confidence I've realized through years of cycling. I literally have memories of being excited about a 15-mile ride and accomplishing it at a decent pace! And just yesterday I was descending a highway hill at 30+mph one-handed, taking a drink of my bottled Gu-mix looking around mildly frustrated at the upcoming stop light.
Failing to appreciate your journey is one of the biggest fails a human can make. Thank you for making this video, putting my inner narcissist in the rear view, and genuinely helping me to appreciate my own climb.😃
First 30miles in the bag good going I remember my first 40 miles I was nearly dead after it now I can do over 100 miles with no big issues at an easy 15 to 17 mph 😁
Thats great. My group doesnt ride that fast.
It's very good to see how other "not-so-professional" bikers do challenging biking and still have fun. Harriet is an excellent addition to GCN-team. Happy, joyful and with a great attitude. I'd like to see more Harriet-Manon rides.
Harriet for presenter! 😃
Love Harriet - need more videos of her cycling journey!
More bikes and steam engines please! Harriet races the train?
This was absolutely awesome. Not only have you shown Harriet that she has the ability to do much more than she realized, but you can inspire others who didn't know what they could do!!
Kudos to Harriet, and the whole GCN team, for helping current and future generations of cyclists.
I LOLed when i heard "I`m a warrior, Bitch!". Or was it "I`m a warrior bitch!"? :D
Great content. As others have said though, you could do a whole series here. Start with this ride, then maybe try all of the things beginners go through: clipless, bike fit, punctures, rides in the day, in traffic, at night....which lights? which helmets? Then do some rides showing how to improve with hills, sprints etc and how that can be structured. You could really do lots with this. Well done Harriet and well done Manon, brilliant presenting.
Glad you enjoyed the video, Chris! We're keen to do more content too!
30 miles as a beginner is crazy. Nonetheless congratulations
So encouraged and can't wait to save up and buy my first bike. May take a while but I'm really looking forward to experience what Harriet is feeling
Great video as always! It would be very interesting to see the same video but on an "amateur" hybrid/commuter bike which more people are likely to own. I am sure it will be as fun given the breathtaking views and awesome cycling lanes!
That Lady is very genuine and refreshing. Keep on that way
They could do it but it'll take them a week to recover
Honestly 😂 Makes me remember my first ride, just about 10km. Legs were sore for about a week
But now I can do a 120km ride and be ready to go again the next day.
@@israelakowe9304 It's not about the distance it's about the intensity.
Great ride, Harriet. Well done. That is a wonderful track.
I'm an Aussie but lived in Exeter from 1985 to 89 with my wife and son. They opened the Bristol to Bath cycleway in 1986 I think and we were among the early riders. Little Sam was six years old and riding his kid's BMX bike, pedaling at a hundred miles an hour, and he loved it. We'd drive to Bristol with the bikes, start the ride, stop in Bath for lunch and then ride back. He made the trip on his single speed BMX bike several times, but every time we'd get back to Bristol, open the car and he'd be asleep on the back seat in twenty seconds.
Since our day it looks like the track has been surfaced but we rode it when it was hard gravel except for the tunnel. And in those days there were no lights in the tunnel, just the light/air shaft half way along. Sam loved riding the tunnel, it was his favourite part. It's good to have our old memories brought to the surface again.
She called it “Pinarelli” 😁😅

The defining moment... that magical feeling for the very first time riding a bicycle. Brought a tear to my eye as I have fond memories with my dad finally learning how to ride a bike
"I'm a warrior, b!tch!'. 😂
are we the only ones who heard the ?? lol
Great job Harriet. I remember my first distance group ride doing 76km as a raw beginner cyclist. Riding my brand new hybrid with saddle, pedals, tires and all that came with the bike, (and no bike fit of course). No bib shorts or padding of any kind, just jeans and a T shirt & street shoes. The first 38kms were fun, the trails beautiful and then a stop for lunch. The 38kms back were .. um .. politely speaking, very difficult. I started to hate the bike, especially the saddle and swore that if I ever found the "wizard" who designed it, I would probably do something considered illegal in most places. Watching a previous GCN show where Hank rides a penny-farthing on a track and crying tears of pain from that saddle I really sympathized with him knowing how he felt. Things progress and improve though. I've collected more bikes (rim and disc brakes), and thanks to GCN I've exchanged saddles 'till I found one that works, developed a good bike fit, purchased padded shorts (at least), waxed the chains, purchased good tools & exchanged tires for different styles and terrain. Longer rides are now a joy and a privilege.

this is so sweet thank you! 🥺
That’s just so enjoyable to see someone falling in love with the bike and riding.
I love her enthusiasm and willingness to try me things. I definitely want to see more segments with her and watch her progress as a cyclist.
