I am a Gen Xer. I grew up in Allentown first on Ferner Street in the old "Lexington Arms" now "Whispering Hills then on Idaho Street up from the SPCA. Thomas Jefferson, Dodd were great schools, walking to Mountainville bowling was awesome. Getting ice cream from Carvel, a hoagie from Lee's, groceries from ACME, clothes from Grants, playing in the old Hoffman junkyard before Kmart was built.
I miss the great times that I had with Jamie, Lynette, Steve, Gary, Dan....
Good Humor truck still delivered to neighborhoods. Playing at Trout Creek Park, rafting, riding my bike through the water on the bike path. Swimming at Mack Pool.
The 1970s Allentown was superb for a kid.
To this day I miss Dr Salvadge on Emmaus Ave near Traubs. Dr Goldfarb was my superb opthamologist.
Hamilton mall with covering was ok. Harolds furniture was great as was Falks near Dorney Park.
Zandy's I think is still around. A place I ate as much as my beloved pizza place on the end of Moutainville shopping center next to where Kmart was.
      😊

Thanks for the vid, Cynthia. Really want to visit the Valley incl Allentown. Seems like one of the most sensible places to live in America - not too big, not too small, close to exciting big cities, close to bigger airports if needed, beautiful surrounding countryside. Packed with history. Four seasons. Reasonable cost. What's not to like?

Allentown was great in the 1960s, '70s, into the '80s. I reside 18 miles from center city, but I would shop in downtown A-town fairly often. When Hess's and Leh's left, the city went down. I haven't shopped there in 35 years!!

Don’t forget about Yaccos Hot dogs they are famous started by Lee Iacocca’s Dad & Uncle they were Iacocca’s but !! The Pennsylvania Dutch could not pronounce the Italian name Iacocca so they went along with everyone’s Yaccos hot dogs Oh Thankyou for acknowledging Mack Trucks

Center Square oh how I miss it what it looked like in the 80's with Woolworths and Hess's and Patio restaurant, how can you forget those overhead canopies. Allentown had more buildings in the city limits in the 1960's than there are today, a lot of people believe A-town City is growing when in fact it actually shrank, and the suburbs of Allentown only grew more in the last 10 years. How do you start in Center Square and Overlook The "Soldier's and Sailors monument" (1899). The Liberty bell was hidden for years during revolutionary war in the basement of the Zion Reform Church that's the reasons for the Liberty Bell marking on glass windows.

Worked at Hess’s in the 60s The annual Flower Show in May was exciting. I was part of the crew who helped transform the first floor from closing at 6 pm on Saturday to grand opening on Monday at 9 o’clock. Oh, how sad it was when the store that made Allentown special folded. It was hard to watch the beautiful art deco building be destroyed. Now an ugly out of proportion building has replaced it.

the planned site was the old hess's building across from the ppl tower then the sink hol happened and then they moved it down the street a block. PPL took the site demoloshed the annex building and put up what was then named PPL plaza.to house the generation company.

What a shiny toilet Allentown turned out to be- but it’s still that .I grew up in the 6th and Tilghman - Old Fairgrounds Neighborhood.
I moved my family from that area after spent rounds were discovered on our sidewalks and front porch.
Admittedly, your video was very well done.
I believe your viewers would also LOVE to see the other side- the blight.
Law St. ,Park St. , Stevens Playground , 600 block of Liberty, 600 and 700 block of 7th st.- just to name a couple.
All within a short walk of the shiny.
Just wear thick soled shoes in case you step on someone’s spent “works”.
As far as “The Liberty Bell Shrine “- The Liberty Bell was hidden in the church’s basement for a time , so it wouldn’t be melted down for ammo.

@davidmalloy8038 Thanks for your comment. I think we need to give credit where it’s due. There are community leaders, educators and developers who are trying to change the stereotype that Allentown has had for so long. Yes, we have a long way to go but my video is about highlighting all there is to offer in our fine city.

Out of abe i think easton is the coolest. Why? I hear you say, well from a perspective of whats the most fun place as far as restaurants bars a happening social city. I live in b and for sure theres great stuff here. Herberts type writer and electronic calculator store comes to mind . A type writer store in 2024!!! And the funhouse is a great bar for live original music. Theres various bars and such that are cool but easton just has better bars and restaurants and walking around stuff. Except for Herbert's and the fun house because those are 2 trully great places in Bethlehem. But point is come to abe and see. Theres a lot here to see n do. Its probably the last type writer store in North America how can you not check it out.

The only really decent part of Allentown is right by the arena and the west end. Theres a farmers market and some decent bars, breweries ect. Strange thing about Allentown is its made up of many ethnic groups yet the food scene is lame IMO with the exception of a few places. Theres very little reason to explore the city.

I grew up in Allentown(1979 William Allen grad), left at 18 (1980). Some of my friends stayed. Came back multiple times, last time was 2022, if I didn’t have family to visit there would be no reason to go there. I have lived in many countries and all over US, I will not be calling Allentown my home ever. If you want to live in a run down place with many immigrants and lots of crime then this is your stop. Sorry but I couldn’t leave fast enough when I was young and never looked back.

@SamuelHendrix-kb8nn You bring up another issue. Since the 78 came in its hurting the older population. In Center Valley and on the other side of South Mountain the New Yorkers are building McManisons which are driving up prices. that in turn is driving up taxes for folks who have lived there for 30+ years. They can not even afford to pay there taxes now. My Uncle in Coopersburg paid $28,000 for his house back in the 1960. He is in his 80's, his taxes now are more then the cost of his home per year then he paid for the home.

I left in 76. I too have lived in many States, Cities, Countries because of military life. When I was stationed in DC #X I would make a few visits per year, take my kids to The Hatchery, Cedar Park to feed the ducks, and so on. I last visited 12 years ago for my mothers funeral. At that time the were tearing up Center City. Like most Cities within a few blocks you have blight. I grew up in the 1st and 6th Wards when they were safe to play on, walk to the playground, to Jordan Park, etc. The Liberty Bell was stored in the Church during the Revolutionary War to hide it from the Brits who would have melted it down to make ammunition.
I need to visit in the near future because my uncle (like a brother) is up in age and is the last of his generation. I am the next oldest. I would like to see what Upton looks like today in person. I understand change, butand I have never lived anywhere that destroyed their historical landmarks for “revitalization.” Most Countries, States, Cities try to incorporate the old with the new. Sadly, Allentwon City Council and Developers didn’t care about the long and well-known industrial center Allentown once was.

I see a lot of disgruntled 👨🏻‍💼 who haven’t yet come to terms with them being the minority in this country in as little as 15 years. If equality feels like oppression than you indeed are the oppresser.
