The lyrics you have heard before (Some are born to sweet delight, some are born to endless night) are from a poem by William Blake called Auguries of Innocence, written in 1803. If you're into poetry of the Romantic era you might have read it before. Obviously Jim Morrison was a fan of Blake.

Jah Wobble has put this and other poems by William Blake to music on the album "The Inspiration of William Blake".
Perhaps little known, but certainly worth listening to.

"End of the Night" seems perfect for something like Twin Peaks. Just a nocturnal, narcotic haze of a song. Perfect for slow dancing to at night in front of the headlights of a motorcycle,
on an abandoned forest road somewhere in rural Washington.

“ End of the Night” is the truly masterpiece by The Doors, in terms of litterary - philosophical echoes and immersive experience of the sound.

Love some DOORS during the hot months ❣❣❣
Ray's keyboard is as summer as the visable heat waves that rise from roadways..... To me, anyway.

These two songs sum up what debut albums are made of, even that of an iconic band. End of the Night is hypnotic and evocative, its beauty is beyond time. By contrast, Take It as It Come is an ordinary upbeat song stuck in 1967. Of course lyrics are intense, as always.

Agree 1000% about Ray Manzerick. I first fell in love with The Doors when I was 5 years old. It wasn't until I was about 10 or 12 that I realized Ray was also playing the bass part. All 4 were amazing musicians and Take It As It Comes was one of my favorites. Robbie and John are still both alive as of 2022.

    • @johnodonnell4593

Heard that while Ray did indeed play bass on the keyboard for live performances, they got a regular bass player for the recordings. Don’t know if that’s the case here.

Hello from New England..Certain lyrics were also changed in this song..Instead of it being take the Trip to the end of the night, they substitute journey because the band didn't want to promote drugs...They did the same on CRYSTAL SHIP...They say a thousand girls a thousand thrills..the original said a thousand girls a thousand pills but again the band didn't want to promote drug use...Peace from the Northeast...

Ray Manzarek met Jim Morrison on a California beach. Jim was a student at UCLA. Ray was in the early stages of what would become the Doors. Ray glanced at the poetry Jim was writing and told him he could put his poetry to music.

The bass lines are great, triadic left- hand key bass, so the lines are his but here is doubled with a (picked) actual bass, before the last chorus break you can hear them with only drums; the keyboard bass is actually an octave about the picked bass - great sound!

If I remember correctly, the lyrics of the song "Take it as it comes" are a bit of a reflection on Buddhism, because at that time, in the 60s, it was quite popular with the Beat generation. The "Some are Born to sweet delight Some are Born to Endless Night" quote is from William Blake(1757-1857) english poet, and also included in movie "Dead Man" of Jim Jarmusch. So yes, maybe Dylan was the first, who inserted poetry in popular music, but Jim is a very close second! At some point I'd love you to react Radiohead's OK Computer, it is a fantastic album. The Doors are fine, always liked their singles and I'm sure I'd have liked their albums back in the day. But the California band I love more than any other is Jefferson Airplane. They had 6 members, 4 or 5 of whom wrote songs and 4 of them sang. Their 1967 album "Surrealistic Pillow" is a classic, their next "After Bathing at Baxter's" (1967 too) is truly psychedelic.
"Crown of Creation" (1968) and "Volunteers" (1969) which came later are also excellent listens. While I do like the 1971 "Bark" album Marty Balin had left the band and Papa John Creach had joined on electric violin on 3 songs.

Yes. Back when 'borrowing' lyrics, in the interest of art, wasn't frowned upon. The original ( 1969 ) 'Time Is' by "It's A Beautiful Day" simply sets 99% of Van Dyke's "Time Is" to music. BTW: Blake has the line "If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, Infinite.", which inspired the title of a book (Huxley), which in turn inspired Morrison to name the band.

People are mentioning the lyrics to End Of The Night came from William Blake, but the band got its name from him as well. At least by way of the title of Aldous Huxley's book The Doors Of Perception. Also thought I would mention that The Ramones did a version of Take It As It Comes. They were fans too.

I can't emphasize enough the effect this album had on me in high school. I may have mentioned previously that little ol' idiot me wanted to be Jim Morrison which resulted in some pretty stupid misadventures. Thankfully I survived and found other role models, for better or worse. And now, onto The Doors' magnum opus...
